Tales from the Haunted Ship: Legends of the Queen Mary

History of The Queen Mary

Built in 1934 and christened by Queen Mary herself, the ship is now a permanent museum vessel in Long Beach, California. The Queen Mary has a rich history of dramatic events. Some based on facts and real events, some based on rumors, tales from the passengers and crew.  

As a luxury ship it transported many famous passengers, like Elizabeth Taylor, Jacky Kennedy and other rich and famous on first class. In second and third class, many more were making their way from America to Europe or the other way around. 

During World War II the vessel was nicknamed The Grey Ghost and the ship was used as a troopship to transport thousands of troops between Southampton and New York; many of whom are said to have died during the voyage. 

A Troop Ship: During the second world was, The Queen Mary was used to transport soldiers. Here from 1943 when it was about to anchor in Sidney with Australian troops.

She was together with the ship Queen Elizabeth the largest and fastest troop ships involved in the war and could carry as many as 15 000 men in a single voyage. Churchill himself remarked that Queen Mary had shortened the war by a year. 

After her stint as a warship, she had several reincarnations including being a job site for hundreds of workers since then, which could explain why so many mysterious occurrences have been reported onboard.

The Art Deco ship retired in 1967 as the market for passengers traveling by sea from New York, USA to Southampton, England declined rapidly as airplanes now could do the work in less time. 

A Number of Haunting Legends

Many of the legends about ghosts and unexplained happenings on the Queen Mary originate from stories told by crew members, passengers, and even those who worked on her in dry dock – however, their authenticity remains unknown.

There is an infinite list of ghosts that are supposedly haunting the ship, with over 150 ghosts to this day and counting. Here are some of them:

Stateroom B-340

The hotel promotes the suite room B-340, that originally was a 3rd class cabin as being notoriously haunted, and there are many haunted attraction tours that take advantage of these ghost legends and will bring you on a tour. 

The ghost in one of the staterooms smelling of cigar and perfume is allegedly haunted by a person who was murdered there.

It is said to be the ghost of a British 3rd class passenger named Walter J. Adamson who passed away in the room and according to people staying in the room, he has been known to stand by their beds, sometimes pulling the bed covers off. 

The Mauretania Room

In this VIP lounge, in 1989 two women were sent to clean it. When they walked in they saw a passenger sitting on a chair on the dancefloor. The passenger didn’t say a word, but kept on staring. When a 3rd woman came in to clean, she asked the passenger to move, but the passenger didn’t budge. 

They were about to call for security when the passenger just vanished right before their eyes. 

The Crewman

A bearded crewman in blue overalls is often reported off, often accompanied by whistling. It is thought that it is an 18-year old crew member from Yorkshire that died in 1966. He was killed after he was crushed under a door during a fire drill. He is now haunting the doorway known as Shaft Alley where he died. 

The Lady in White

Some legends are hundreds of years old with reported sightings of a woman in white or a child running around the ship in little period attire. The lady in white is said to be a first-class passenger who is still dancing in the Salon of the ship in a long gown. 

The Engineer

In the old engine room it is said that one of the engineers died and came back to haunt the place. 

Boiler Room Number 4

Inside of this room people have reported about seeing a little girl running around. Sometimes she is sucking her thumb or holding a doll. 

The Haunted Pool

People have reported about wet footprints on the floor near the first class swimming pool that was once a luxury place with an illuminated fountain and pearl ceiling and mosaic tiles. 

One legend is of a little girl who is said to haunt the first and second class pools, but no deaths were recorded in either pool. There are also reports about a girl in a tennis skirt and a woman in an old wedding gown. 

The Murder Suicide

Another claim of a ghost haunting the ship is made by psychic Peter James when he visited The Queen Mary. He said that in 1959, a father murdered his wife and daughters and then killed himself in room B474 and the daughters haunt the room and surrounding corridors. But it is not really proven to happen on the ship but in Roanoke, Virginia in 1964. 

Chilling Accounts From Longtime Passengers & Crew Members

From passengers to crew members of the Queen Mary, chilling accounts of strange and supernatural occurrences are said to have haunted the decks of the famous ship. One such story was that of a former captain who experienced frequent nightmares about running in circles until suddenly appearing in front of a white figure located at the bridge.

Other occurrences range from changing room temperatures to hearing doors slam shut without warning while visitors board. Despite all these tales—the true origin of this haunted ship is yet to be discovered.

Many passengers have reported seeing lights dancing around certain decks on The Queen Mary as well as hearing voices whispering from empty hallways. Despite years of skeptics and non-believers, these eerie tales still resonate with many visitors on board this haunted vessel.

While many can relate to the eerie tales of supernatural occurrences onboard the Queen Mary, skeptics are quick to call these stories mere myth and legend. Despite this, one thing’s for certain: the stories of these chilling occurrences have captivated and stunned visitors for decades. Whether you choose to believe in them or not, one thing is clear – The haunted legends of The Queen Mary will never be forgotten.

Conn Barracks Ghosts of Nazi Soldiers and Bloody Nurses

In an old nazi soldier camp in Germany called Conn Barracks there are still those thinking they never left. Several American soldiers tell about the ghost of them still haunting the place.

One of the most freakiest types of barracks are the ones that were used as a Nazi psych ward during world war two. The Conn Barracks is just outside of the Schweinfurth city limits in Germany. 

The Conn Barracks was before the war, known as Flugplatz Schweinfurt, constructed as a Luftwaffe airfield particularly for Stuka pilots built in 1936. During the war it was a bomber base mainly, and according to legend, also used as a sort of hospital or a psych ward of some sort. 

Although not likely to be the main thing for the barracks, it makes sense there was some sort of hospital-like place during this type of place during the war. Especially considering this particular barrack went through seventeen bombing attacks from the allied.

After the war the Americans took control and renamed the whole place Schweinfurt Air Base which Conn Barracks is a part of. Like many former Nazi camps, barracks and other military places it was in the hands of the American Military and it was used by them until 2014 when most American forces pulled out of Germany. At its peak Schweinfurt Air Base housed around 11 000 people, soldiers as well as their families. 

The Nazi Soldier and Bloody Nurse

When Conn Barracks was used as living quarters by the Americans, they occupied the space above a former drainage room where the Nazis stored their bodies before embalming them, according to the stories. Whether true or not is a bit tricky to confirm or deny, but in any case it is from these particular rooms many of the paranormal reports about Conn Barracks come from. 

At least two American soldiers on two separate occasions in the same room. In the middle of the night they woke from their sleep and saw a Nazi soldier together with a nurse covered in blood, standing by their beds. 

The soldiers are unable to move at all as the visitations from the ghosts are there. The Nazi soldier kept saying something to the nurse in German, almost as if he was giving orders. The nurse leans over the bed with a sad face and chokes the soldier until they go back to sleep. 

More Than One Ghost

But it is not only bloody nurses and nazi soldiers that have been whispered about in Conn Barracks. 

Another ghost that allegedly haunts the old barracks is that of a young woman carrying a fetus as she floats down the hallways. Who and what happened there will probably remain a mystery.

Hauntingly Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital

The abandoned sanatorium in Germany is said to be haunted by all those souls that died inside of it because of its dark history. And in the Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital, it wasn’t just sick people who ended up dying, but several murders took place in it or around it as well. 

Some buildings are just thought to be haunted by the look of them. Especially these old abandoned buildings with a dark and sinister history attached to them. One of these buildings with long ominous corridors and peeling paint is the Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital not far from Berlin in Germany. 

The sanatorium was first built in 1898 as a response to the rapid increase in tuberculosis patients at the time as it was the number one cause of death in Germany at the time for people between 15 to 40. 

The Abandoned Sanatorium: The Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital was originally built in 1898 as a treatment place for tuberculosis. Today it is abandoned with a haunted reputation over it.//source//wikimedia//qbanez

One of the treatments for this was fresh air, so the sanatorium was built in a remote pine forest. The Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital was a complex of around 60 buildings that in the end, almost served as a small town of itself, with its own bakery, shop, apartments, post office, stables, butcher shop and laundry houses. At the time it was the largest treatment center in the world for lung diseases with at its peak beds for over 1200 patients. 

During the first world war Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital served as a field hospital, and it got famous for treating Adolf Hitler who was wounded in his leg as well as being blinded by a gas attack by the British forces in the Battle of Somme. 

When the second world war started it would again be a treatment hospital for the Nazi forces until they lost and ended up being occupied by the Russians from 1945. Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital stayed like that until 1995 before closing its door for good. At least for treating patients. 

The Abandoned Buildings as a Murder Place

Many murders have taken place in this remote area and around it. After the Soviet left, it became a hotspot for satanic and occult people to gather to drink and keep seances. And it was also those with an even more sinister idea. 

In March 1991, a mother and her newborn child of three months were brutally murdered right outside the old sanatorium. It was the Beast of Beelitz  who had struck again, a notorious serial killer that had started on 24 of October in 1989. 

The serial killer Wolfgang Schimdt used to be called Beast of Beelitz or Pink Giant because of his choice of weapon. The killer who legally changed name to Beate and underwent gender reassignment had terrorized the local women for years and his modus operandi was to strangle the victims with pink womens underwear. The Beast of Beelitz is in prison to this day after killing 6 people. 

But it wasn’t the only murderer who used this place for his crimes. A photographer and sadist named Michael K brought a 20 year old model named Anja P. to Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital for pictures, and as he explained it, an erotic photo session that ended with her accidental death. 

During the photo session he ended up killing her, but the police found clear evidence that this was not an accident, but a premeditated murder. He beat her with a frying pan and had sex with her corpse after she died.  

Dark Tourism of Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital

Like many of these mysterious and abandoned places there are many people attracted to the eerie beauty of the macabre building and its history. Many visit the place to get a closer look at the building itself or just explore the paranormal rumors that are created by just the haunted atmosphere of the place. 

Dark Tourism: Most of the buildings of Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital are left to decay and a number of visitors come to experience the eery atmosphere of the abandoned building. But one of the reasons it is fenced off and off limits is because it is dangerous. Before 2015 it was mostly left to its own devices and people would come and go as they pleased. It was used as a movie location for the 2002 movie “The Pianist”, as well as being the place for horrific crimes. 

Today it is more closed off and taken back by the public to renovate and made into a tourist attraction rather than an urbex location for exploration. 

A Haunted Hospital

So is Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital really a haunted place? Considering all the dark stuff that have happened inside of the building complex it is easy to think why people would call this place haunted. But rather than a specific story or encounter that made the place famous, it seems to be the other way around. 

There are however those who enter the place that exit it with tales of something paranormal happening to them. It is the usual stuff of seeing apparition where there are suppose to be none as well as hearing strange sounds and having the feeling of being watched as the room gets colder. 

So what do we think? Is Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital haunted or just plain spooky?

The Black Ghost Cat of War

In 1941 a fighter plane crashed in a field in the English countryside during WW2. The pilots died in the crash, but a mysterious black cat lingered. Now it is coming back every year on the date of the crash as a ghost cat, haunting the field. 

It’s 1941 and the second world war is a fact across the continent and the European sky is littered by blinking lights in the sky from the German Blitzkrieg. Although the sky is not lit up by stars now, but by war planes. For the naked eye from the ground it is impossible to see if it is an enemy or friend inside the cockpit, the people around start learning to recognize the airplanes by sound. 

There are countless of stories tal tells about the tragic things that happened during this dark period of time. And more than one story emerged that somehow involved this war.

The Plane Crash in Shropshire

This is not a war story about the ghost of a fallen soldier though, but the ghost cat that kept haunting the place the soldiers died.

On the eve of 23rd of October in 1941, a plane was soaring in the sky over the green land of Poynton Green in Shropshire, England. The plane was coming back after a night sortie and heading back to base. But something went wrong that night and the trip ended horrible. The night that was pitch dark until then is now lit up as the plane is heading straight to the ground. 

The airplane that crashed: It was a British Beaufighter that crashed into a field and burned that night. This is where the ghost cat that is said to haunt the scene were it all happened is supposed to emerge from.

The plane is a British Beaufighter, belonging to the 68 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF), and was heading to High Ercall where the RAF had an airfield. For an unknown reason the plane crashed in the field and the flames started to take over the aircraft. 

A local farmer came to the site to help and put the fire out, but it was too late and the flames engulfed the plane along with the people inside.

It was the Czechoslovak pilot Josef Kloboučník and sergeant Josef Klváčel, the radio operator that crashed with the plane and died that night. They were the first Czech members of the squadron, and they would never see the end of the war they fought in. 

The Black Cat Haunting the Crash Site

But the farmer that tried to help them didn’t leave empty handed however that night. As the plane went up in flames a black cat emerged from the burning plane. The farmer is said to have kept the cat as a pet for many years until it died as well.

According to some sources the farmer ended up giving the cat to an old woman that lived nearby. And that cat supposedly disappeared after the old woman died. But it still wasn’t completely gone and is said to have returned as a ghost cat.

Every ten years it is said that a black ghost cat is seen at the crash site, the ghost cat still lingering even after all these years. And in 2031 it is supposed to make its comeback.

The Lingering Presence of a Nazi Ghost at Skaugum

In the bunkers at one of the Norwegian Royal Family’s residents, Skaugum, there is a rumor of the place being haunted. One of the ghost that haunts the place, is the former Nazi Reichskommissar from the war, Terboven.

No one has flagged with the Norwegian flag in a long time since the German occupation five years earlier and only the nazi flag with the black swastika on the white disk was allowed. But it is all about to change as the allies are closing in on Berlin and the second world war is coming to an end.

8th of May is approaching, the liberation day and the freeing of the nation are a couple of minutes from being announced. People are gathering in the the streets, ready to celebrate and start anew in a peace.

But there are some the freedom is nearing its end however. The German Reichskommissar for the occupied Norwegian areas, Josef Terboven have an arrest order on his name and is one of the number one nazi officials the Norwegians are after.

Terboven knows the war is over and that it will be showed no mercy from the allied forces, not from the people he spent five years at oppressing. He decided to end his life to avoid capture, but according to the rumours, his spirit never managed to escape.

The Reichskommissar in the Bunker

As Reichskommissar, Terboven was the one giving the orders that would send the people of the nation to the working and death camps. He was responsible for the imprisonment, executions- everything.

When he took office in Norway it was he who brought death penalty back to a country that had made it unlawful. You could end up dead by leaving the country without permission, listen to illegal radio, taken with illegal newspapers and help war prisoners and refugees. He was by the end of the war, one of the most hated men in Norway.

All of this is hanging over his shoulders that day in May when people are celebrating. He sits in his bunker at Skaugum, a farm originally owned by the Royal Family outside of Oslo. He once barged in, chased the royal family away and started living there. Now, he himself is the one that is about to be chased away.

The bunker at Skaugum is only 200 meter from the main house the crown prince of Norway owns of and stays in today. There the next King and Queen of Norway lives together with their children.

On that day in 1945 Terboven realized that all hope for a German victory was out of question and hid in the bunker together with the last of the German officials left.

Wilhelm Redieß, the SS boss in the country had already killed himself by gun. “That was early, he beat me to it”, he commented on the suicide.

But Terboven would follow shortly and he had brought 50 kg of dynamite to his bunker at Skaugum and that is how he ended his days. He blew himself up to avoid being prosecuted for his crimes. At 23:30, he detonated the bomb exploded along with the body of Redieß.

The remaining crew of SS spent the rest of the dynamite the next day when Norwegian police came to burn it all down.

The Ghost in the Bunker

According to the legend, the bunker at Skaugum is also were Terboven will spend his eternity. For a long time after the war, it has been reports about activities that no one has been able to explain close to the bunker where nazi officers ended their days.

His Majesty The King’s Guard; the Royal Guards, a battalion of the Norwegian army are the ones guarding the Royal property and residents, including Skaugum today. And there is also from the soldiers the stories comes from.

They tell they have experience many strange things they believe to have a paranormal origin walking the empty places near the bunker at Skaugum. Strange tracks from or to the bunker is spotted for example by the forest surrounding the estate close to the fence. The soldiers have to patrol there and comes back with stories about strange sounds and apparitions, even during the day. Late at night close to the bunkers, the keep hearing the sound of voices and when they go to check it out, they find that they are alone. At least the only living thing there.

Skaugum Farm: The big farm has been the Norwegian residency for decades and even today the place is the home of the crown prince and princess. There are also placed calls from the outer guard post when no one is placed there to make them.

A common factor for all of this is that it is all happening right by the bunker Terboven blew himself up in. The royal guards working at Skaugum are of the opinion of that it is all contributed to Terboven and his ghost lingering in the bunker forever. He never got peace after his death and roams the property were the next royal heir of Norway resides.
