The Haunting of Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery: Chicago’s Most Infamous Graveyard

Advertisements

Blue lights twinkling between the graves, ghostly figures and even phantom houses appearing and disappearing are only some of the ghost stories from Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery. What really happened to this abandoned cemetery?

Hidden deep within the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve, about twenty-four miles southwest of Chicago, lies Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery—a place that has gained infamy as one of the most haunted locations in the Midwest.

Time and nature have overtaken this once-respectable burial ground. A murky quarry is next to it and trash is thrown on the ground. Next to the gravestone of a couple of infants are small toys littered next to it. Something else lurks in its overgrown paths and broken headstones. For decades, visitors have reported eerie encounters, strange lights, ghostly apparitions, and even brushes with the spirits of the long-departed.

A Cemetery with a Dark Past

Established in the early 1830s or 40s, Bachelor’s Grove is the oldest cemetery in Cook County, Illinois. The first burial was that of Eliza Scott in November 1844. Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery housed the Scottish, English and Irish immigrants that came in the 1820s. The name comes from both the Batchelder family who used to live there as well as a group of unmarried men calling themselves the Bachelors.

Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery was once a peaceful final resting place for early settlers, but as the years passed, it became the target of vandalism, decay, and something far more sinister.

By the Prohibition era of the 1920s and 1930s, the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery had reportedly become a dumping ground for Chicago’s notorious organized crime syndicates. Rumors persist that the mob used the nearby lagoon as a watery grave for those who had crossed them, their bodies weighted down and left to disappear beneath the murky depths.

Aside from the rumors of being a dumping ground for the mafia, it was said to be a peaceful place until the 1950s when the Midlothian Turnpike was rerouted and left the grove far away from everything. Teenagers started using Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery as a lover’s lane, a place to drink and party and ghost stories and fantastical legends took hold.

Today, most of the eighty graves are unmarked due to rampant vandalism, the headstones either stolen or toppled over, and the grounds left in disrepair. Some of the coffins were even dug up and robbed. But while many of the gravestones are gone, the spirits remain.

Encounters with the Supernatural

Since the 1960s, countless visitors, ghost hunters, and paranormal investigators have reported chilling experiences at Bachelor’s Grove. Some claim to hear whispers carried on the wind, see floating orbs of light in blue or red, or experience an overwhelming sense of dread.

On the entrance there is a large black and tan dog sitting or running down a path. People realize it’s a ghost first when the Others have reported near-collisions with phantom vehicles that appear out of nowhere on the nearby roads, only to vanish without a trace.

The Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove

Among the spirits said to roam the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, none are as well-known as the “Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove.” This spectral woman, dressed in a flowing white gown, is often seen wandering the grounds, cradling an infant in her arms. Many believe she is the spirit of a grieving mother, doomed to wander the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in search of her lost child. The legend claims that she is seeking something, or perhaps someone, although no one knows what.

Her story got known when a group of investigators explored the cemetery in 1979 and apparently took a photograph of her in a hooded robe with her baby cradled in her arms. Later it seems the Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove attire changed from story to story, wore only a white dress and had no baby.

The Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove: This picture of what appears to be a ghost sitting on a grave in Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery became quite famous after it was taken in 1991 by Judy Felz, and so did the legend of the Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove.

In 1991, a famous photograph taken by Judy Felz from the Ghost Research Society captured what appears to be a semi-transparent woman in period clothing sitting on a broken headstone. The infrared image remains one of the most popular pieces of paranormal evidence associated with the cemetery.

But who was the Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove?

There have been many speculations about who the woman in the graveyard could have been. For a long time they believed she could have been Luella Rogers because of the stone placement as she was the one buried next to the headstone just marked: “Infant Daughter” in number 15. But over the years the “Infant Daughter” stone has been moved and is actually on top of another woman.

Infant Daughter: A lot of the details of the haunting of Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery is connected to this tombstone. Source

The “Infant Daughter” headstones actually belong to the daughter of Bertand Fulton and Kathryn Vogt. Could this be the origin of the ghost? Or could it be someone else?

Could Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove possibly be Amelia Patrick Humphrey? Amelia was the first wife of Senator John Humphrey of Orland Park, a prominent politician from the mid 1800’s. Their third child Libby May died when she was only 11 months and 6 days and buried in the Patrick family lot (#44) in Bachelors Grove. Could this be the mother then, who is eternally visiting her young daughter’s grave?

The Phantom House Appearing in the Mist

One of the stranger legends from Bachelor’s Grove is the story about the disappearing house. It is said to be a white one-story Victorian house. On the porch there is a swing and a picket fence encircles it. When people claim to see it, they describe it more transparently. In the windows there is a flickering yellow light, as if a candle is lit.

Many people have come back from the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, talking about a house they were unable to find again. Many have sketched the same type of house from the legend, claiming they had never heard about the stories from this place.

A mist is often closing in on the house as well, and one story even claims that a line of people were waiting by the front door. When people try to approach it, they say that it shrinks and when you get close enough, it simply vanishes.

What or where the legend comes from is uncertain, but the story goes that if you actually are able to reach it, you will never be able to return.

But did a house even exist in this area? Some claim that there was nothing of the sorts built on this land, but maps from so long ago are not the most reliable. According to different maps there used to be around four homes and other structures close to the cemetery. There are pictures however that have resurfaced with buildings from the early 1900s looking like they used to be there, one of them is even said to really look like the descriptions of the story.

The Murdering Caretaker Following You

The most commonly told version of the Caretaker the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery caretaker and his family living in a house in the woods. The house is said to be located a short distance west of what is now the roped-off entrance to the main path leading to the cemetery off of 143rd Street, across from the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve parking lot. This path is also known as a portion of the Midlothian Turnpike that was unofficially closed to vehicle traffic in the 1960s, with the official closure occurring in 1977.

All is normal with him and his family until one day out of nowhere he becomes enraged and kills his entire family. It is said that he was overcome with “evil spirits” that told him to kill his family. After he realized what he had done, he took his own life. At some point down the timeline of the story the townspeople burn down the caretaker’s house to erase all memory of this tragic story.

Now, people encounter him walking around the cemetery grounds, often with an oil lamp in his hand, telling people to leave the place. If they don’t listen to him, he is following them on the trail, the light shining behind them before he suddenly vanishes.

The killing is said to have happened in the 70s, but there is no proof for this. In fact, the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery never had a caretaker at all. Still, there are plenty of people claiming to have encountered him over the years.

The Hook Man Legend Comes to Bachelor’s Grove

Another well-known story in the area is about a stranded couple, a local version of the Hook Man legend. It tells of a young couple who park by Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery. When they decide to leave, the boyfriend finds the car won’t start due to being out of gas or a stalled engine. He tells the girl to stay in the car while he goes to get help. While waiting, she hears a scratching noise on the roof that continues for a while. Curious but frightened, she remains in the car. Eventually, she sees blue lights and a siren behind her. An officer approaches, opens her door, and urgently instructs her not to turn around. Overcome with curiosity, she looks back and sees her boyfriend hanging from a tree above the car, his throat slit, his fingers barely touching the roof, scratching it. This horrific sight drives the girl into madness.

Now, this is a common story, but it gained new interest when a policeman shared it as real during an interview. In Halloween 2012, a group of paranormal researchers met a retired Bridgeview police officer who claimed to have seen official police reports of the incident. He mentioned baby-sized footprints on the roof of the car and stated that the murdered boy’s girlfriend was in a mental institution in Tinley Park. He spoke strongly about the report’s existence and the truth of the story, but later he recanted and stopped further communication, making it difficult to distinguish between tale and fact.

Disappearing Cars of the Cemetery

It’s not only houses and people that disappear into the night at Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, but cars as well. A legend that really took off in the 1970’s was the stories told about the disappearing cars. According to these stories, drivers would pass the desolated roads by the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery. According to them, they kept seeing a car pulled over on the side of the Midlothian Turnpike close to the cemetery. Although what type of car it was, changes from each retelling, although most often described as an older looking car, perhaps from the 40’s or even older. But when they went to double check in their rearview mirror, there was no car there anymore.

Some stories even said that night drivers ended up colliding with these phantom cars. A couple was at the corner of Central Avenue and Midlothian Turnpike. Checking in both directions, they saw it was all clear and made the turn. Out of nowhere, a “speeding brown sedan” as it’s often described as came hurling in the direction of the cemetery. The car crashed into the couple and they could feel the impact, hear the glass shattering and the metal crunching.

When they exited the car, the brown car simply faded away, and when they looked at their own car, it didn’t even have a scratch.

Although a popular story to tell about the place at the time, it seems like the legend of the phantom cars is not the most told anymore.

The Farmer and Horse in the Pond

Right next to the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery there is a little pond that is also said to be haunted. The story is that in 1870 there was a farmer plowing in a nearby field. His horse became startled and set off. The farmer, tangled in the reins, was dragged with the horse who jumped into the pond. Both drowned as the weight of the metal plow was so heavy it dragged the both to the bottom.

Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery Pond

It is said that the farmer and the horse can be seen on the surface of the pond as well as appearing on 143rd Street right behind the cemetery.

But did this really happen though? According to historians it couldn’t have been in 1870 at least, as the pond didn’t even exist until after 1900. Was it another pond further away from the Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery? Another year? Did it happen at all?

The Lingering Spirits of Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery

From shadowy figures darting between the trees to ghostly apparitions of monks, mobsters, and misty forms hovering above graves, the spirits of Bachelor’s Grove refuse to be forgotten. Paranormal investigators continue to explore the site, capturing electronic voice phenomena (EVPs) and anomalous readings, adding to the growing legend of this haunted graveyard.

For those brave enough to visit, Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery offers more than just a glimpse into Chicago’s past— But you must visit Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery at day. From sunset to sunrise the cemetery is closed off and patrolled. To keep teenagers and those up to mischief out? Or to keep something in?

Halloween Stories: Calan Gaeaf — When Spirits Roam In Wales

Advertisements

Before the modern Halloween came back to the British Isles, there were celebrations like the Welsh Calan Gaeaf. The first day of winter. The night before this day was when the veil was thinnest and the spirits roamed the land.

Home, home, at once
The tailless black sow shall snatch the last one.
Welsh rhyme from Nos Calan Gaeaf

As the winds of autumn grow colder and the days shorter, the people of Wales prepare for Calan Gaeaf, a festival steeped in ancient tradition and eerie folklore. Celebrated on the night of October 31st, this Celtic holiday marks the transition into winter—when the veil between the living and the dead thins, allowing spirits to walk freely among the living.

Much like its more famous counterpart, Halloween, Calan Gaeaf is a time when ghostly apparitions and supernatural forces are said to roam the earth. But in Wales, the night is uniquely filled with tales of terrifying spirits, haunted crossroads, and ominous signs of death. It’s a night where even the bravest avoid stepping outside after dark.

The Origins of Calan Gaeaf Festivities

Harvest: The Calan Gaeaf is a harvest festival as well, and things like apple bobbing and telling fortune of apple skin were some of the activities.

Calan Gaeaf, translating to “the first day of winter” in Welsh, has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. For the Celts, this night represented the end of the harvest season and the start of the dark half of the year, when the world was gripped by cold and the dead returned to walk among the living. Or is it really a tradition for all Celts? There are those who claim there really is no evidence that Samhain was ever celebrated in Wales, making some think it is more a Gaelic custom rather than Celtic.

But how far does this celebration date back though? The word, Galan or Calan is actually from the latin, calends “first day of winter.”

What is Celtic though is the dating of the day. The night before the day is called the Nos Galan Gaef, and this is when the spirits from the otherworld, or Annwn, are said to come out to play. The Celts counted the days to begin on the evening before, not the morning off.

The same term is in the Cornish language called Kalan Gwav, or Allantide as it is mostly called now. In Breton language in modern day France it is called Kalan Goañv.

Wales, with its rich Celtic heritage, embraced these ancient beliefs, and Calan Gaeaf became a night filled with both celebration and fear. Fires were lit in villages to keep the malevolent spirits at bay, and families gathered indoors to share stories of ghosts and ghouls, all while keeping a wary eye on the night outside.

The Haunting Presence of Hwch Ddu Gwta

Among the many eerie figures associated with Calan Gaeaf, none is more feared than Hwch Ddu Gwta, a fearsome black sow with no tail. Legend says that Hwch Ddu Gwta roams the Welsh countryside on Calan Gaeaf, accompanied by a headless woman, the Y Ladi Wen, stalking those who dare to venture outside after sunset. Anyone unlucky enough to encounter this spectral beast would surely be doomed, dragged away into the darkness or even to the underworld itself.

Y Ladi Wen: The Lady in White is a Welsh legend, known as Y Ladi Wen or Y Ddynes Mewn Gwyn. She appears dressed in white, especially during Hollantide and Calan Gaeaf, and is featured in Welsh oral tradition to warn children against misbehavior. Y Ladi Wen can be seen as a scary ghost who might seek help or offer treasure. She is linked to the villages of Ogmore, Ewenny, and St Athan. In Ogmore, a spirit was said to roam until a brave man approached her, discovering a cauldron of gold under a stone in Ogmore Castle. He took some treasure but later returned for more, angering the spirit, who attacked him in revenge. He fell ill and died after confessing his greed, leading to the belief that “Y Ladi Wen’s revenge” would affect anyone who died without revealing hidden treasure. //Source: pduncaza/Deviantart

To avoid Hwch Ddu Gwta and other restless spirits, people would rush home before nightfall, locking their doors tightly. The idea of being caught outside was a terror for many, as it was believed the spirits could claim anyone out in the open on this haunted night.

Hwch Ddu Gwta a Ladi Wen heb ddim pen
Hwch Ddu Gwta a gipio’r ola’
Hwch Ddu Gwta nos G’langaea
Lladron yn dwad tan weu sana.

The black sow and headless white lady,
Will try and catch the last to leave,
Thieves abound knitting stockings,
Beware the tail-less black sow on winter’s eve.

A game played by the bonfire was also that one of the men would wear a pig skin and chase the children to keep the fear and legend alive.

Divination and Dark Omens During Nos Galan Gaeaf

Aside from the lurking spirits, Calan Gaeaf is a night filled with ancient customs and rituals. One of the most unnerving traditions was a form of divination—an attempt to peer into the future and learn of one’s fate, particularly regarding death. People would gather around bonfires (coelcerth) and throw stones into the flames, each person marking their stone with a special symbol or name. After the fire had burned down, the stones were retrieved. It was said that anyone whose stone was missing in the morning would die before the next Calan Gaeaf. You could also see the people who would die if you ran around the church three times and peered into the keyhole of the church door.

Another dark tradition involved staring into a mirror at midnight on Calan Gaeaf, with the belief that the face of your future spouse—or, chillingly, a skull—would appear behind you. If you saw the skull, you would never marry, and die within a year.

Boys would cut ten leaves of ivy, throw one away and put the rest under the pillow. This would help them see the future, and if they touched the ivy, they would see witches, or gwrachod, as they slept. The men would also dress in women’s clothing mimicking the Gwrachod and go from door to door for treats. This was thought to repel the evil spirits.

The girls grew roses in hoops they could go through. They then cut the rose and put it under their pillows to see their future. Peeled apple skin was also thrown over the shoulders to spell the first letter of the future husband.

Bonfire Night: Central to the Nos Calan Gaeaf is the bonfire, or the coelcerth as it is in Welsh.

The Modern Halloween Celebration in Wales

Though today, many of these old customs have faded, the fear of spirits abroad on Calan Gaeaf still lingers in the corners of Welsh folklore. The old ways of celebrating seem like it’s being swallowed by the highly commercialized American Halloween.

On this eerie night, even the skeptics can’t help but feel a shiver down their spine as the wind howls through the hills and the night closes in. After all, as the old tales warn—if you’re out too late on Calan Gaeaf, you might just find yourself face-to-face with something that doesn’t belong in this world.

So when October 31st comes around in Wales, beware of wandering too far from home. Hwch Ddu Gwta might be watching, and the spirits may be closer than you think.

The water hole found in the forest is also known as the Witch’s Well. The term “Baudi” translates to a well, and as per local legends, this well at Chudail Baudi was excavated during the British colonial era. However, this well holds more than water—it holds a chilling curse, believed to be the creation of a vindictive spirit.

The Woman in White Saree

Local folklore narrates the haunting tale of a woman who met a tragic fate many years ago, and her lingering spirit is said to torment this well. She is often described as an English woman with long black hair and a white saree. Many claim that she is asking passing cars for lift or just constantly staring at you from the backseat of your car if you refuse her.

According to the legend, the woman was unjustly accused of adultery, a crime that led her husband to mete out a gruesome punishment—he buried her alive near this very well. Her restless spirit is thought to haunt Chudail Baudi, forever seeking retribution against those who cross her path.

Chilling Encounters on the Road

Around Chudail Baudi, many have recounted eerie experiences bordering on the paranormal, especially on the surrounding roads. It is said that cars automatically slow down in the area, no matter how much you try to accelerate. It is also said that if you encounter the woman in the white saree and doesn’t give her a lift, she will chase after your car. A story very similar to The Ghost of the Lady in White Sari of Delhi Cantt.

There are tales that her showing up has caused many accidents on the nearby roads, where even some of the car crashes have cost more lives.

Some claim to have heard a woman’s anguished cries echoing from the depths of the well, while others have witnessed a spectral figure, ethereal and haunting, hovering above the water’s surface. Venturing close to the well after nightfall, they describe an unsettling silence.

The Future of Chudail Baudi

Although the haunted legends around the water hole are well known in the region, this doesn’t stop life for moving forward. Plans are to make this area a playground for the local kids. The question is, will the haunting stop for this reason? Or perhaps it will just get more fuel?

The Haunting of Madh Island Road and its Beaches by the Murdered Bride

Advertisements

On this serene vacation island with its lush beaches, it is said that Madh Island Road and the nearby beaches are haunted by a would-be bride that was brutally murdered in the area.

Madh Island Road, located in Mumbai, India, is known for its picturesque beach and luxurious resorts facing the Arabian Sea. However, what many people don’t know is that this seemingly idyllic location is also home to one of India’s most terrifying ghost stories.

This road connects the mainland of Mumbai to Madh Island, which is a small fishing village with a population of about 10,000 people. The narrow and deserted road is about 15 kilometers long and is surrounded by mangroves, salt pans, and fishing villages.

The legend goes that a woman in white haunts the road at night, causing accidents and terrorizing anyone who crosses her path both on the Madh Island Road and the surrounding beaches.

The Murdered Woman in the Mangroves

One of the most told legends about this area is about the young woman that is said to linger. According to the stories she was brutally murdered on her wedding day and her body was disposed of in the thick forests of mangroves nearby.

She is said to roam the beaches, and streets where it is said she is stopping passing cars. According to the stories she is still wearing her bridal clothes and anklets as she is sobbing. For what is uncertain. To get help or to warn people? To get some sort of revenge? In any case she is said to have been the cause of several of the road accidents that happen on these roads.

The Death on the Road

Another variant of the legend is that she wasn’t murdered per se, but died in a car crash together with her husband on their wedding night. The reasons for their crash have many variants. Some claim that they simply were unlucky, some say that the husband sped the car in front of the car and jumped, leaving his wife to fatally crash into it.

The woman died on the spot, and her spirit is said to have haunted the road ever since. According to the legend, the woman’s ghost appears on the road at night, causing accidents and terrorizing anyone who crosses her path.

When these stories are said to have happened varies, but the legends go back at least a couple of decades. According to the stories she is said to appear on nights with the full moon and staff working at the hotels nearby are said to have heard her dying screams.

The Ghost of the Bus Passengers

Another told legends from these parts is about the ghosts of passengers of a ghost that crashed somewhere along the road. It is said that ghosts haunt the road, looking for help. There are also several car crashes that are said to have left their ghosts, as they wander the road they died on for eternity.

The Ghost of the Lady in White Sari of Delhi Cantt

Advertisements

After darkness falls on Delhi Cantt in the city, the ghosts are said to appear. Several of the locals have reported about the ghost of a woman wearing a white sari approaching cars, asking for lifts. Where she is going is unclear, but if you tell her no, it is said she will chase you.

The part of Delhi called Delhi Cantonment or simply Delhi Cantt is located in the heart of New Delhi, is a bustling hub of activity during the day. The Delhi Cantt houses a lot of the defense and army housing and schools.

It is said that this part of Delhi is the safest area. However, as the sun sets and the night falls, a different kind of activity takes over – the eerie and ghostly kind.

With all of these army forces you would think that Delhi Cantt would be a peaceful one. But according to the local word of mouth it is anything but. The area of over 10 000 acres close to Dhaula Kaun is notorious for its spooky legends, with tales of supernatural occurrences and sightings of apparitions and unexplained phenomena.

The Woman in White Saree

According to the legend, there is a middle aged woman wearing a white sari that is said to haunt the area of Delhi Cantt. She is said to have gray hair, and some sources even point out that she apparently has hairy arms.

Why she is said to wear a white saree though, is uncertain, however, many ghost stories involve a woman in white saree. In India and especially in Hinduism, the color white is also the color of mourning, and many  widows have traditionally worn them. The white saree is also said to represent purity, innocence as well as spirituality. This with the fact that most modern ghosts globally are wearing white, makes this trope especially common.

The Ghostly Tales of Delhi Cantt

Back to this particular ghost story, there are some variations of the reports and sightings. Some claim she comes out from the lush and green areas, some say she is just wandering the roads, most reports pinpoint her to between 1 and 4 am.

She is said to be walking along the roads and asks for a lift when night falls over the neighborhood. Apparently many of the call centers in the area advised their employees never to stop their car and give anyone a lift.

If you deny her a lift, it is said that she is following the car and even matching its speed, so you can’t outrun her.

It is said that she is the ghost of a lady that was killed on the route when she was going someplace. Perhaps on the road in a car accident, or perhaps in the green forestry people claim she comes from. To where we don’t know, but apparently she is still trying to get there.

The hotel was known as Hotel Miramar Winter Station and was built out with many buildings, chapels, a casino, a playground and sport facilities. It was a state of luxury, and the guests were all from high society where even the King and Queen of Spain visited.

Today the only building still standing from it is the building from 1816 designed by the architect Pedro Garcia Faria and the once glorious place is now only an abandoned shell of what it once was. And throughout the years, it truly was a lot.

The Civil War Closed the Door of the Hotel

But the story took a sharp turn in the later years. In 1930 the luxury hotel closed its doors as a hotel and spa. According to the stories, it is said that the owner, Marquis de Bosch lost the hotel in a poker game.

At the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Preventorio de Aguas de Busot was turned into a sanatorium for children. The idea was to take uninfected children and keep them away to prevent them from being infected as well as to accommodate orphans.

When the disease started to die out the hospital was abandoned in the late 1960s and remains so to this day.

The Building as a Sanatorium

A sanatorium is an old name for specialized hospitals that were made for specific ailments. They were often built in the countryside with plenty of fresh air in a healthy climate isolated from the outside world. Sanatoriums across Europe and America were very popular to treat tuberculosis until the discovery of antibiotics.

It could however also be a place for people to heal from things like alcoholism, nervous diseases like hysteria or emotional exhaustions. After medical advances the use of sanatoriums declined and many were abandoned in the mid 1900s often and has since gained a haunted reputation.

The Healing Thermal Water

The water in the area was thought to contain healing properties all the way back to Roman times and it is also chronicled by Arabs that resided in Spain in medieval times.

They have talked about the good water in the hot springs found in the area, making it a perfect spot for a wellbeing hotel. It is also a place perfect for where mysterious things happen.

The Haunting in the Abandoned building

Now the building is abandoned and the only visitors are those seeking out the paranormal rumors and trying to investigate if they are true or not. In 2005 they tried to install some fences around the place, but no fences have ever held the most intense people out.

People that have visited the place say that you can find many secret tunnels from the war leading as far to the neighboring town called Campello. There is even paperwork from both the time it served as a hotel as well as a hospital where even old patient files lie scattered around in the ruins. They have also come back claiming to have seen a ghost or two.

Inside the old hospital it is said you can hear whistles while a translucent figure is climbing the ruined stairs.

It is said the place is haunted by the children that ended their life here, even though there are not really any recordings of deaths related to tuberculosis in the building. The legend persists and there are many who claim to have seen the ghosts of children around the ruins.

Although no one really died of tuberculosis, there were recorded deaths of fires, sunstrokes and falls.

The Woman in White

It is also said that a woman in white is seen crying when calamities approach. According to the legend, she could be seen in the reflection in a mirror that hung by the stairs to the first floor.  If you saw her laughing and crying at the same time, it was all good. But if you saw her only sobbing it meant something bad was going to happen.

She is most often seen walking around the building at night and some claim that was  the wife of the Count of Casas Rojas, the former owner of the hotel and spas. Some of the variations of the legends says that she used to reside inside of a mirror, but when the mirror broke, she escaped and is now walking freely around.

According to the locals, the staff that used to work there used black magic in the church in the building and there are rumors that the place was also the place for a sect with ill intentions.

The Future of the Sanatorium

Through the knocked down fences, the dark building stands looming on the hill.

What will happen with the building is unclear, as it has been the topic of debate and in court for decades now. Some want to construct a hotel again, perhaps turn it into a museum. Some even want to tear the entire building to the ground.

Verge del Toro Hospital and the Night it Became Haunted

Advertisements

One night the Spanish Civil Guard were called out to strange things happening at the old Verge del Toro Hospital in Spain. When they got there, they experienced what they claim was an extreme haunting from the ghosts of the former patients.

On the island of Menorca there was a hospital that closed in 2007 after the New Mateu Orfila General Hospital opened on Menorca. The hospital in the city of Mahon had operated for over 60 years before closing its doors.

The hospital became a well known haunted hospital after they did a segment on the place on the Cuarto Milenio program that showcases different allegedly haunted locations and ghost stories in 2012.

The story was told of Daniel, in the civil guard from Menorca that had visited the closed hospital five years earlier.

The Night of the Haunting at the Hospital of Verge del Toro

On November 1st in 2007 the Spanish Civil Guard as well as the police got a call for someone breaking in  around half past two in the morning and they went in after a warning for the night security working in the building.

At this time, the Verge del Toro hospital had already been abandoned for a couple of months, the windows were dark, the doors locked.

A patrol of two agents arrived shortly after and went from room to room to find the ones breaking in but found no one. When they were on the ground floor however, they heard a macabre laughter and whispers coming from the upper floors.

When they were standing outside of the hospital they could see how the lights in the former hospital went on and off for no reason and shadows appeared and disappeared in the windows.

The guards called for backup and four Civil Guard agents as well as two from the National Police Corpse that just happened to be walking by were tasked to inspect the hospital further.

They went in again, both by the stairs and the elevators from first to fifth floor to find those laughing and pranking in the empty hospital, but found no one.

Daniel told the TV-program that they believed those breaking in at the Verge del Toro hospital hid and that further steps were needed to get to the bottom of the strange things happening in the abandoned hospital.

On the third inspection when they went in full force with even police dogs with them they finally realized that not everything was as it should and the strange things happening was not the work of people that had broken in.

When they went up to the 5th floor they had already inspected two times, they found that the heavy beds and furniture like lamps were dragged across the rooms and the doors to the cabinets were opened up. The furniture was too heavy to be moved in the ten minutes they left the room, according to Daniel.

They tried to get the highly trained police dogs to come along with them to the top floor in the elevator. The dogs had been perfectly fine up to this point, but started crying when in the elevator and refused to go out when they reached the top floor. Not even when the owner threw their favorite toys into the corridor they managed to get the dog out. The owner claimed that usually the dog would have gone to the bottom of the sea to look for the toy. But not out in this haunted corridor.

The Woman in White

It was then they saw her, on their fourth attempt to find out what was happening there. Hidden in the corner they saw the shadow of a very strange woman, almost as if covering in the shadows around 20 to 25 meters away from them.

The agents asked her to identify herself and get out with her hands up. They get no response from the strange woman. They ask again and tell that they will draw their weapons if she disobeys and threatens them in any way.

Then the woman is said to have just suddenly disappeared into thin air right before their eyes. This was even with the windows and the doors of the hospital blocked off and agents at all of the exits. There was simply no physical reason to disappear from the place.

The Neighbours Spotting the Ghosts

It is said that that night was not the only night when something strange occurred in the hospital. Several months after the episode had aired on TV, the residents of the Tanques del Carme neighborhood next to the hospital experienced somethings strange as well when they noticed that again strange things were happening to the lights in the otherwise dark fromer hospital.

After many years of controversies over what to do with the building, they decided to reform it into a socio-health center in 2019, and is still undergoing remodeling.

After the strange events at the Verge del Toro hospital right after its closing, the people that went that night still have no rational explanation for what happened.

The 5th floor used to be reserved for people with psychiatric problems and people think that it must have been a former patient there. Did she come back after the Verge del Toro hospital closed down for some reason? Or was it so that she really came back from the dead?

The Darkness Haunting Bor Forest in Czech Republic

Advertisements

For many years now, Bor Forest in the Czech Republic is said to house many haunting stories. Everything from strange ghostly legends from Slavic folklore to strange things that went down during the communist regime after the second world war.

Bor Forest, also known as Branišovský les, stands as a silent witness to a myriad of chilling legends and mysterious occurrences in the heart of South Bohemia, near České Budějovice. Bor means pine and the forest is spanning approximately 300 hectares, this mixed forest has gained notoriety for its tragic events, whispers of supernatural entities, and inexplicable phenomena.

It has undergone significant transformations throughout time, serving various purposes such as an excursion forest park, shooting range, and military area close to the Polish border. The landscape features diverse tree species, with the northeastern part covered in spruce mixed with oak, while the southwestern region is dominated by pine trees.

Bor Forest’s reputation for paranormal activity rests on numerous legends and reported encounters. The forest is believed to be haunted by a variety of entities, each contributing to the eerie aura that envelops the area.

The Military Tragedy in Bor Forest

Once upon a time, often set to the 1960 to 80s, there was a military base stationed in Bor Forest to guard the local storage for their ammunition. It is said that four soldiers were patrolling close to the former guard post and one of the pair was taking over the nightshift when something happened. According to the stories, one of the soldiers started to change, like another being, something monstrous. Another version tells that the soldiers got scared from “The Horror of the Forest”.

This caused chaos among the soldiers that started shooting and three of them ended up dead and the last one died from the wounds later at Budweiser Military Hospital where he managed to tell a little bit about what happened, but not enough to end the mystery.

What really happened then is hard to tell. Some say it was more of an internal thing and that stress caused some of the soldiers to take their own life. Some say that it really did happen, but it was in a completely different place and was an argument and jealousy that caused the shooting.

There were no writings about this in the newspapers or other media. Seeing that the Czech Republic was under the Soviet Union and heavily censored could also be an explanation as to why there is not more written about this except from the local gossip. Even to this day, a lot of these documents are still classified.

But what could it have been, this horror from Bor Forest that the story talks about. As it turns out, there could be more than one supernatural and dark thing that the soldiers came face to face with.

The Haunted Swamps and the Vodník

Czech Vodník

References to Bor Forest go back at least 400 years. One of the stories circulating around the Bor forest is about the swamps and waters in the forest. They used to be much bigger than today, and many travelers ended their life in these waters throughout time. It is said that the souls of these people were trapped close to the waters and they stayed to haunt them, trying to lure bypasses to join them in death.

Some of the early swamps or waters were also said to have a Vodník living there, a sort of sea spirit, or water man from Slavic folklore living in water, much like the German nixon or the Scottish kelpie.

Vodník was said to look much like a man with green hair, but his bride was often a mermaid or a girl he drowned. He was also known for luring children and women to the water by hanging colorful ribbons or mirrors around or shapeshifting to a child and then drowning the one trying to rescue him.

The Black Man

The Black Coloum were the Black Man is said to often be spotted in Bor Forest.

A sound often reported on in Bor Forest is the sound of footsteps in the dry leaves or heavy snow. The sound of the steps have chased many people through the forest and many believe that it is most likely the step coming from the Black Man.

Described as a tall figure with a broad black hat and a flowing black cape, the Black Man is also called the Black Knight and even The Lord of the Forest. He has been witnessed floating above the ground, moving with unnatural speed. Some claim to have heard soft music preceding the appearance of this enigmatic figure, accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature.

The first written reports about the entity was in 1993, and the nest in 1994 and he is mostly sighted around The Black Pillar, a memorial for something people don’t remember. Today it is an integral part of the lore of the Forest.

Another story coming from the 90s is also the rumor for people seeing mysterious red eyes hovering about two meters above the ground after nightfall have been reported by witnesses. The first written account was in 1998. Contrary to explanations attributing them to car taillights, some claim these eyes approached them or even pursued them through the forest.

The White Lady

As with most haunted places in Europe, it wouldn’t be complete without its own Woman in White, and the haunted Bor forest is no exception.

The apparition of a woman in white is tied to a tragic tale of a murdered resident haunting a nearby building, unable to find peace even in death.

It is also said that a young girl is haunting the woods after taking her life in an abandoned farmhouse between České Budějovice and Branišov. Although there is not really any proof that such a thing ever happened in the farmhouse.

The Hanged Man’s Tree

Another story told about Bor Forest is the strange tree said to have taken the lives of many. In 1927 a young couple checked into the new and luxurious Hotel Praha in Branišov. The building is today used as an office for the city council.

The couple went on their way on a hike into the forest, but never returned. When a search party was sent out, they found them hanging in a tree in the midst of the forest. Not much was said about the tree itself until another woman was found hanging in the same tree not too long after.

Mr. Kříž was a local man and decided to take matters into his own hands and went into the forest and cut the deadly branch from the tree and brought it home to burn it. Not too far after this, he ended in an accident and his hand he used to cut the branch off with ended up paralyzed. This alarmed the rest of the townspeople that went to the tree, cut it all up and burned it to the ground.

Although the descendant of Mr. Kříž claims there was no paranormal story connected to the tree, or that there were no accidents after he cut off the branch, the story about it lives on. The tree is gone, it is said that people have heard a voice coming from the place where the tree once stood. The voice is beckoning them to it, encouraging whoever is passing to take their own life.

Time Warps and Unexplained Events:

One of the most perplexing phenomena reported in Bor Forest involves time warps. In the 1960s, one of the residents of U Pěti zlodějů (also named Jednoty, on older maps) was cycling home from České Budějovice, around 6:00 p.m. As he rode through the dusty, unpaved Bor Forest, he experienced an unusual phenomenon.

The entire forest seemed to undulate before him and he got off his bike. He noticed that the road and gravel beneath his feet were in motion. Exiting the forest and passing through Branišov, he was surprised to find no lights in any of the windows, even though it was barely 7:00 p.m. Upon reaching home, he discovered it was 3:00 a.m. The one-hour journey had inexplicably taken nine hours.

The Strange City

Another story about time is when two women walked through Bor, and one of them suddenly ran into the bushes. When she didn’t return for a prolonged period, the other went to look for her. To her surprise, there was no trace of the friend. Just as she wondered where she might have gone, the missing woman reappeared seemingly out of nowhere.

She recounted a strange experience of a green mist enveloping her, parting to reveal an unknown landscape filled with vibrant, intense colors and a distant golden city. A man in black approached her, placed a hand on her forehead, and pushed her back into Bor Forest. While she spent a few minutes in an unfamiliar place, her friend waited in the forest for three-quarters of an hour.

The UFO-Crash

It is certainly a strange place with a lot of old legends. But the strange and mysterious stories from newer times are just as haunting, especially as a lot of information from its time as a closed off communist country hides a lot of the information.

One time, there was an unknown object that crashed in the area and it was closed off for a year by a special unit. Even the local military was denied access to it. When the area finally opened again, many of the trees looked damaged, like something had crashed close to them. What could it be? The firemen claim that the trees caught fire around the year 2000. A witness said that it could have been more likely an airplane or helicopter that crashed in the area, although of course the local gossip is that a UFO landed there, and that the information surrounding this is still top secret.

Branišovský les and its Haunting Allure

Bor Forest, with its haunting mysteries and supernatural tales, invites those brave enough to explore its depths. As legends intertwine with the natural beauty of the landscape, Bor Forest remains an enigmatic realm where reality and the paranormal blur into a tapestry of chilling narratives. Venture forth, if you dare, and immerse yourself in the unsettling allure of Bor Forest’s haunted legacy.

The Haunted Mysteries of Old House Woods

Advertisements

A Virginian forest at Chesapeake Bay has centuries of ghost stories to tell. The Old House Woods are packed with the spirits of pirates guarding treasures, soldiers from the wars as well as entire ghost ships lingering above the dense treetops.

A man was making his way through the Old House Woods in the dead of night. His car had broken down and as he was trying to fix it, a dark shape came closer and closer. Too close, and too late the man fixing his car noticed the horror of what was happening. The man realized that it was something that looked like a skeleton wearing a golden armor.

“Is this the Kings Highway? I’ve lost my ship,” the skeleton asked, the bones cracking, a voice coming from nowhere, the dark sockets of where the eyes should be, seeing nothing. The man freaked out and ran off, but this was not the first time armed skeletons were seen in the forest, as local, Jesse Hudgins reported of as early as in 1929, and perhaps not the last either along with the other strange mysteries of haunted treasures, ghosts of redcoats and even ghost ships.

The Deep Dark Old House Woods

The boggy and dense pine tree forest close to the serene Chesapeake Bay, is an 50-acre expanse known as Old House Woods in the little town of Diggs in Virginia, holds more than just the remnants of an abandoned colonial-era homestead and has been known as the Black Forest or Haunted Woods by the locals for centuries.

This mystical forest down the Beach Haven Road is said to be steeped in history and mystery. It is said to be haunted by the lingering spirits of British soldiers and pirates who sought to conceal their treasures in the shadows of the 17th and 18th centuries as well as many other shapes and echoes of ghosts. We will now have a look at some of the stories that came out of these woods.

Frannie Knight House of Angry Spirits

The ghost stories from this area go back centuries as it has been used as a secret port by many and the eerie early colonial area is all steeped in mystery.

The woods are said to have gotten its name from an old colonial building from the late 1700s that was built in the middle of the woods. Whose house and where it was is uncertain. The building was abandoned and simply known as Frannie Knight House, and already then the place was said to be a haunted one.

People believed the abandoned house to be haunted by angry spirits and two times it caught fire spontaneously, the second time it burned down. As the locals said at the time, it was like the house set itself on fire.

The Storm Woman Looming Above the Trees

Another strange thing seen around Old House Woods is the story about The Storm Woman. She can sometimes be seen, hovering above the treetops in her white nightgown. It is said she is surrounded by a green or blue light.

Hanging above the trees she screams loudly, her ghostly voice echoing to the beach, as if she is warning the sailors about a storm that is coming. So although her appearance is fighting, perhaps she is one of the more kinder spirits you can encounter in the forest.

The ghosts of redcoats from the wars are seen as shadows between the trees as well as stranger stories. Ghost animals are seen as horses and crows are attacking wanderers of the woods as well as Black Hounds. As well as some strange stories about the forest being haunted by headless cows as well. This haunted forest covers all sorts of specters.

Buried Treasure and Vanishing Fishermen

The eerie tales of Old House Woods began with the pursuit of hidden riches, and there are many stories about hidden treasures in the forest or on the beach. One of the stories is that a ship sailed from England in 1651 by King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester. The ship was on its way to Jamestown, but got off course and ended up in White Creek.

The ship was seized by bandits that killed the crew and stole the treasure to bury it in the forest. It is said lanterns can be seen, green glowing in the dark and the ghost of the crew are still trying to protect the treasures as the ghost of the bandits are trying to dig it up.

Legend has it that in 1880, a daring fisherman named Tom Pipkin embarked on a quest for buried treasure within the forest’s depths. The locals were all warned to stay away from the forest as the woods were deep and the trees grew thick. There were also rampant pirates and thieves in the area and it was said that huge treasures were buried.

To the dismay of the locals, Pipkin never returned, and his boat, discovered days later, held not only an air of mystery but also two gold Roman coins and a silver cup. The forest had claimed another seeker, leaving the treasure untouched and enigmatic.

Ghostly Maritime Spectacles of Ghost Ships

Old House Woods extends its supernatural influence to the nearby Chesapeake Bay, where maritime mysteries unfold and there are also many stories about seeing ghost ships on the misty shore as well as above the forest. One of the more well known stories is when local fisherman Ben Ferbee recounted an otherworldly encounter when he claimed to have heard the ethereal strains of harp and organ music emanating from an unseen source.

As he gazed upon the waters as he came out from White’s Creek, a colossal ghost ship materialized on the bay, defying the laws of the physical world. The phantom vessel glided over the beach, hovering above the woods, and revealed a surreal scene—an otherworldly crew descending from the deck on a rope ladder, armed with mysterious tools.

He called out, but they didn’t respond as they were heading straight towards him. It floated over his head and sailed ghostly up the beach over the trees. According to him, the ship stopped above the pine trees and threw down rope ladders the ghost climbed down from and disappeared through the trees.

Ghost Ships: One of the many legends about the woods is seeing the strange and haunted ghost ships floating above the trees or disappearing in the mist of the bay.

The Many Specters of Old House Woods

Old House Woods, with its spectral tales of vanished treasure seekers, ghostly maritime apparitions, and the secrets buried within its ancient trees, stands as a testament to the enigmatic forces that dwell within its borders. As night falls, and the whispers of bygone eras echo through the forest, those who venture into Old House Woods may find themselves facing a broad spectrum of ghosts.

Armed skeletons and pirates still guarding their gold, ghost ships trying to find their ports and strange ghosts warning against an oncoming storm.
