The Dying Screams of a Girl on Fire Haunting the Screaming Tunnel in Canada

Said to be haunted by the dying screams of a young girl who was set on fire and died, the Screaming Tunnel in Niagara Falls in Canada has become the site of some of the most eerily ghost legends said to linger within the dark. 

The Screaming Tunnel is located in the Canadian town of Niagara Falls in Ontario and the haunted site can be easily accessed by car or on foot. It is today said to be one of the most haunted places in the country although the root of the haunting remains a mystery.

The Screaming Tunnel is a small limestone tunnel that runs underneath the railroad tracks, and it’s said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl who died in a tragic fire.This 125-foot-long mysterious tunnel has been the subject of many chilling tales and legends for over a century. The tunnel is situated off Warner Road, just a short distance from the Niagara Parkway.

The limestone tunnel built in the early 1800s was running underneath what once was a Grand Trunk Railway line, now the Canadian National Railway. The Screaming Tunnel actually shares the same railway with the supposedly haunted Blue Ghost Tunnel as well. This has led to the belief that the spirits are using this railway to travel. It wasn’t made for passage though, but as a drainage passage to keep the tracks from being lost beneath flood waters.

The Legend Behind the Screaming Tunnel

Embraced with overgrown mosses, vines, and vibrant foliage, The Screaming Tunnel has a tragic story behind its eerie reputation, although no one can quite prove that it actually happened. The natural smell of sulfur is heavily prevalent.  According to the legend, the tunnel was once part of a farm owned by a wealthy family in the early 1900s in an old farmhouse behind the south side of the tunnel. The far end of the tunnel leads to a pathway through woods and a small cluster of homes was found around here.

One night, the family’s house caught fire, and the girl was trapped inside and her clothing and hair caught fire. She managed to get out by herself and ran out from the burning house aflame. She made it to the tunnel where she tried to extinguish herself as the flames tore through her clothes and skin. Panicked, she was looking for help from one of the nearby houses or anything that would extinguish the flames. But it was futile as she didn’t manage to put the flames out by herself and she died alone in the darkness of the tunnel.

While the story of the girl set on fire inside of the Screaming Tunnel is widely accepted, there are some variations to the legend. 

Some believe that the girl was murdered by her father who was mentally unstable. This is speculation, but it could seem like this version of the legend is a bit more modern. According to this version, he was abusive and a drunkard and that he was the one setting her on fire in the midst of a bitter custody battle. His wife had finally had enough and was taking their daughter with her when she was leaving him. Another fight ensued and the daughter ran away from them. But her father chased her and when he found her hiding in the tunnel before pouring gasoline over her and setting her on fire himself. 

Others claim that she was a victim of a love triangle gone wrong or even more disturbingly, the girl was raped by a drunkard she met when she was passing through the tunnel. In this version her body burned to destroy the evidence. Regardless of the specifics, the story has become a part of Canadian folklore and continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Evoking the Ghost of the Screaming Tunnel

As you walk through the tunnel, you can feel the weight of the legend on your shoulders, and every sound seems to echo louder than it should. Those brave enough to test the legend come prepared to the tunnel with matches. 

According to the legend, if you light a match in the tunnel at midnight and say the girl’s name three times, her ghost will appear, and you’ll hear her scream. Although what name she has been given is strangely not really known.

Some say that there is no name needed and that evoking her ghost is much simpler. If you light a wooden match while standing in the middle of the tunnel, you’ll hear a shrilling scream and your match will immediately blow out. Perhaps a cruel test to do on a ghost legend who perished in this exact way, but a rite of passage for the teens in Niagara Falls and a path of litter of beer and liquor bottles and graffiti trails after them.

The Pyre of Donald Jordanson

A completely different legend that has emerged in newer times though is the legend of Donald Jordanson that has been making rounds online. He lived on 16 acres of farming land. In 1924, he was newly married and had a newborn baby named Sam. That year it was a drought after the El Nino and the wheat and corn crops failed after the stormy weather. That dreadful summer, he lost everything. His wife left him and he lost his farm, and he lost himself in a psychosis. 

He disappeared and soon others did too. The lawyer Frank Male, his former neighbour Ethal Davidson and his business partner John Frew. When the police went to his farm to investigate, they noticed smoke coming from the tunnel. At least a dozen bodies were piled up on each other in a blazing pyre. The farmer, crazed and screaming, wawed a pitchfork towards the officers and fell over, impaling himself. So perhaps it is really the ghost of Donald Jordanson who is crying out in the tunnel? 

Although as with most of the urban legends, there really isn’t much substantial evidence that this even happened. And considering there are few, close to no sources for this as well, makes it even less likely to be rooted in truth.

Alternative Stories Behind the Screaming Tunnel

But really, how much of the legend is actually true? Despite being a very popular legend, it is strangely without many details and facts. A reporter for the Niagara Falls Review once tried to find any historical evidence of a farmhouse set on fire, but found nothing. 

Historically there used to be a small group of houses on the other side of the tunnel a bit away from the main road like in the legend. The small village is gone now, but you can still see the old foundations of the houses among the trees. It is said that one of the people living in one of the houses was a woman who was known by the neighbours for being a bit off, or at least enough enraged to leave her mark.

It is said that she had a tumultuous marriage and got in a lot of loud fights with her husband. But she wouldn’t necessarily unleash all of her anger towards him. After having a fight with her husband, she would bottle up all that anger and hold it in until he left for work and would walk to the very middle of the “Screaming Tunnel” and scream at the top of her lungs. 

Neighbours would hear this but ignore it, as many didn’t want to deal with the woman, or perhaps understood her anger. This is what many believe to be the true origins of the name “The Screaming Tunnel”

The Ghost of Maules: Unmasking the Chilling Legend of Le Loyon

For decades, sightings of a strange humanoid were seen wandering the Swiss forests in Maules. Clad in camouflage and masked by an antique gas mask, the figure now known as Le Loyon or the Ghost of Maule turned into an urban legend.

Deep in the dense, brooding woods of the Gruyère region in western and French speaking part of Switzerland lies the village of Maules, a sleepy Swiss hamlet surrounded by pastoral hills and ancient forest with around 350 people.

For over a decade, locals and hikers whispered uneasily of something else among the trees: a tall, silent figure in a gas mask known only as Le Loyon. Shrouded in mystery and dread, this eerie entity became one of Switzerland’s most unnerving urban legends, known today as The Ghost of Maules.

The Gruyère District in western Switzerland: known for its rolling green hills, medieval towns, and namesake cheese, also holds a darker, more mysterious side. Its dense forests—often cloaked in mist—are steeped in legends passed down through generations. Here is the landscape of the woods near the Château de Gruyères.

A Forest Stalker in Camouflage

Le Loyon was first reported in the early 2000s where most sources state 2003 as the beginning of it all. But there are those who claim that the sightings of Le Loyon goes back to the late 1990s by residents and ramblers who ventured into the Maules woods near Sâles, in the Canton of Fribourg. 

Witnesses described the figure as well over six feet tall, clothed in an olive-green or camouflage military-style boilersuit or gimp suit, draped in a dark cloak, and most disturbingly, wearing an antiquated gas mask that obscured the entire head.

This combination of industrial, military, and being faceless struck terror into those who glimpsed it. The mask, resembling those worn in chemical warfare, gave Le Loyon the unsettling appearance of something not entirely human. It never spoke. It never chased. But it watched.

It was most often spotted along a particular forest path known to locals and most often on Sundays. Reports recounted how the figure would appear in the distance and then vanish into the foliage without a trace when spotted, almost as the Ghost of Maule wanted to remain a secret. 

In one of the first reported sightings, a local woman claimed to have seen Le Loyon in June, picking flowers on a clearing close to the trail, startled when it was seen and clutching the bouquet of wild flowers. According to the woman, Le Loyon dropped the flowers and fled. Who was the most frightened?

A Community Gripped by Fear by Le Loyon

Although Le Loyon never displayed aggression, fear spread through the area. Parents told children to stay away from the woods. Hikers changed their routes. 

For around two decades, there were at least twelve encounters with Le Loyon. As Marianne Descloux said when she encountered Le Loyon: “It was a rainy Sunday. He had a hood, a dark pilgrim and his gas mask. What can go through his head? I don’t know, but it was impressive and unpleasant. I hope I never run into him again.”

The local authorities were contacted several times, but without concrete evidence of a crime, there was little they could do. Some speculated Le Loyon was simply a hermit with a strange sense of fashion. Some believed the figure was a mentally ill recluse; others insisted it was a supernatural being — perhaps a spirit of war, a forest warden cursed by time, or even a personified trauma from Switzerland’s hidden past.

The Photo That Made It Real

Everything changed in 2013 when a photograph of Le Loyon was captured and published in a regional paper, Le Matin. Taken by an anonymous hiker, the image shows the eerie figure standing alone on a woodland path, facing slightly away from the camera, cloaked and masked exactly as described. 

‘I came across him near the marches,’ said the unnamed photographer who tracked it down. ‘I approached him up to a dozen metres away.’ ‘He had a military cape, boots and an army gas mask – an antique type, I think. He measured more than 1.90m. He stared at me then turned its back on me and left in silence.’

The photo quickly went viral giving hard proof to a tale many had dismissed as folklore or just seeing things. The local community was now more afraid than ever. Women and children didn’t want to venture into the woodlands by themselves. 

Not long after the photo’s release, another strange discovery was made: Le Loyon’s clothes and gas mask were found neatly folded and left in the forest along with a disturbing note.

The Final Message from The Ghost of Maules

According to Le Matin, the note contained a cryptic and bitter farewell titled: “Death Certificate and Testament of the Ghost of Maules” and was first posted on a local bulletin.

In it, the author expressed anger at being hunted by the media and misunderstood by society, claiming that the forest was once a sanctuary — a place of peace — that had been taken from them by fear and judgment. The message hinted at emotional turmoil and deep loneliness but offered no identity. The way it worded the letter also left someone believe it was a suicide note.

Dear nickname Patrick du Matin, not only are you a moron but you are above all an assassin.

You murdered a very harmless being, who found, in his walks, a real therapy of happiness, a cerebral resourcing allowing him to face the responsibilities and the vicissitudes of his “normal” life and he had some!

The ghost cannot explain this happiness, but you do not seem to know Sacher-Masoch; you will discover that it takes everything to make a world.

Then you are an assassin of freedoms.

To hear you, we find ourselves in the Middle Ages, at the time of the witches. Why don’t you rise up against the little toads, helmets and hoods, dressed in leather, who backfire on their motorcycles, in these same forests, them in violation!

Do they take the time to meditate in front of the little Oratory, to ask for a better world? I terrorize children, make me laugh! Why are they not terrified by the horrors and the crimes, very real these, that they see on television, in the media?

Who is in charge of setting the Tolerance and Freedom button in this company? These beautiful notions benefit more dealers, pimps, burglars, rapists and hooligans!

Switzerland is small, anything that is not in accordance with the garden gnome must be eradicated. I thought, during these years, while I was always left alone, until you, that these feelings were evolving, you give me the opposite proof, unfortunately.

The Phantom disappears, the risk of a Beast hunt is too great. It will come back to haunt the narrow minds of your kind, for ultimately a ghost never dies.

To the amiable walker or mushroomer who will discover my tinsel: Deliver this letter to Mr. Syndic or Vice-Syndic, or even to a journalist, capable however of discussing Freedom and Tolerance.

Since the clothing and note were found, no further sightings of Le Loyon have been reported. The legend, however, has only grown.

Specter or Sad Soul?

To this day, no one knows for sure who — or what — Le Loyon was. Was it a reclusive individual driven to hide behind a mask for personal or psychological reasons? A mentally ill woman, a gigantic man or perhaps a strange survivalist or someone suffering from a skin condition? 

Perhaps it was simply a person enjoying dressing up or playing a prank? A 4chan thread on the board /r9k/ appears to have Le Loyon themself posting. The thread was about an anonymous poster who was contemplating doing scary things in public for fun, which ‘Le Loyon’ posted in talking about what they did, Another poster quickly recognised it looking eerily similar to that of Le Loyon legend. If the poster said the truth, ‘Le Loyon’ would simply be a bored person looking for some fun.

As time progressed and the legend grew, some started to believe that the Ghost of Maule could be something far stranger than a person enjoying dressing up. Was it something closer to a ghost, or guardian of the woods, or some sort of other, specter wrapped in humanity’s forgotten horrors?

The Haunted Jenny Dixon Beach and Wilfred Barret Drive

One of the most haunted beaches in the world is said to be the Jenny Dixon Beach in New South Wales. Here, the last decades have been filled with stories of vanishing hitchhikers along the roads as well as older ghosts coming in from the sea. 

The sun-drenched coasts of New South Wales, Australia, are known for their rolling surf, golden sands, and laid-back seaside towns. But there’s one beach where the lapping waves seem to carry more than seashells and driftwood.

Beneath the tourist-friendly veneer of Jenny Dixon Beach lies a sorrowful, sinister past — one whispered about in local pubs and by late-night campfires.

Jenny Dixon Beach: This beach in New South Wales, known for its ghost stories and haunting legends and is to find on most of the “most haunted” lists of haunted beaches in the world.

The Hitchhiker of Wilfred Barrett Drive

One of the ghost legends haunting the beach actually comes from Wilfred Barret Drive, a stretch of road along the beach between Magenta and Noraville, and is the ghost of a vanishing hitchhiker, now called Jenny Dixon by the locals. 

Horror Movie: The Ghost Story inspired the 2011 horror film Jenny Dixon Beach and has attracted many curious paranormal investigators hoping to communicate with her.

It was sometime in the 1970s when an unspeakable act of violence left its stain on this otherwise idyllic coastline. Or, as the area was nicknamed  “the child abuse capital of NSW” by The Daily Telegraph in 2022, perhaps it was never peaceful at all. Some even claim that the murder was as early as the 1950s. 

According to local legend, a young woman was hitchhiking along Wilfred Barrett Drive, the road that skirts the dunes by Jenny Dixon Beach. In many variations of the legend she was headed home from work. She was picked up by a group of men, often said to be five. Instead of offering her a safe ride, subjected her to a brutal assault on the Jenny Dixon Beach. 

They left her to die alone on that dark beach or maybe in the bushes close to it. Some say that she was found there, dead, some say that she was still alive when they found her, but died a few days later of her injuries. The police had nothing to go on. Her killers were never caught. Justice, it seems, got lost somewhere between the trees and the tide.

But the woman’s restless spirit didn’t stay buried with her in those coastal sands. It is said that her ghost lingered for revenge. Some say that a group of five men died in horrible and mysterious ways over the course of the next few years. One hanged himself. One died in a car accident, claiming that someone walked in front of his car in his dying breath. One drove off a cliff and one either died of a self-inflicted gunshot or ran his car over an embankment after picking the ghost up in his car, driving him mad when no one believed him. Before they died, they allegedly complained about seeing and hearing things before they died. 

For decades, drivers traveling Wilfred Barrett Drive at night have reported seeing a woman in white, pale and sorrowful, walking the roadside. She is also said to be seen close to the Nora Head cemetery where it is believed the girl is buried. 

Some have even claimed to pick her up. She rides in the car for a while, sitting in the backseat, murmuring little or nothing at all, before vanishing into thin air, leaving behind only the lingering scent of cigarette smoke.

The Truth Behind the Hitchhiking Murder Victim

According to most sources, there seems to be more police reports about people seeing the ghost of the hitchhiker from Wilfred Barret Drive than about the murder she supposedly died from. Local people as well as those just travelling through not knowing about the legend are supposedly seeing the vanishing hitchhiker from time to time.

The part about the men seeing and hearing things before they died is also a classical horror trope from books and movies, but if you talk about the stories in the surrounding neighborhoods, they will definitely know what you talk about as well as having a few stories of their own. 

A real case connected with the ghost story is the disappearance of the Holmes sisters from the 1950s. Eighteen year old Grace and her little sister, eleven year old Kathleen went for a walk to Norah Head lighthouse and never returned. 

A day later, their dead bodies were found in a swamp close to Tuggerah Lake. A local fisherman was suspected and even charged for their murder, but was never convicted. 

Today the case remains unsolved. 

The Woman from the Janet Dixon Ship

But the hitchhiker isn’t the only ghost said to roam Jenny Dixon Beach, and this one comes from a much older time. 

In 1973, four terrified campers burst into town with a story straight from a nightmare. The group of 12 year old boys that had been camping on the beach, claimed a woman in a long, old-fashioned dress appeared to them in the dead of night, reaching out from the shadows with desperate, pleading hands. The boys said they threw sticks at her, but they went right through her transparent body. They ran up the stairs from the beach towards the car park, but she followed them, still with her arms outstretched towards them. She vanished before their eyes, leaving behind a bone-deep chill and footprints in the sand where no one should have been.

Local historians tie this spirit to a maritime tragedy: the wreck of the Janet Dixon, the coal schooner from which the beach takes its name. It was passing through Norah Head, just south of Jenny Dixon Beach by the Tasman sea. Because of the unfamiliar coastline of at least seven ships wrecked in these parts between 1871 to 1903. This was when the lighthouse was built. 

In the mid-19th century, the ship was lost to the treacherous waters off the Central Coast. One woman — thought to be the captain’s wife or a passenger — washed ashore at what would later become Jenny Dixon Beach. Her young son, who had been aboard with her, never did.

This story has also been attributed to Raymond Grove who lives close to the beach, and he spent the rest of his life trying to find out who she was. This is most likely also where the story of a grieving mother searching for her son comes from. 

Since that night, the woman is said to roam the shore, searching for her lost child, her sorrow carried on every crashing wave.

The Haunted Jenny Dixon Beach

Jenny Dixon Beach is a strikingly beautiful place to visit by day. The waves sparkle, the sand is soft, and the headlands offer a stunning sunset view. But when the sun dips below the horizon and the ocean turns black as ink, the beach’s other side awakens.

If you ever find yourself driving that lonely stretch of Wilfred Barrett Drive after midnight and a lone figure appears on the roadside, pale and dressed in white, do yourself a favor:

The question about red or blue paper has scared Japanese students for generations now. The spirit of Aka Manto (赤マント) is still haunting the toilets of schools to this day, and is still a mystery of where the legend comes from. Was he a bloodsucking vampire? Serial killer? Perhaps an ancient god? 

You’re in a dimly lit school bathroom in the remote and old part of your school. You are the last one in the building, and you just needed a moment of peace. Then, from the stall next to you, a deep, unsettling voice asks a simple question:

“Would you like red paper or blue paper?”

You have already heard the stories and you know you’re about to die in one of the most gruesome ways possible.

Let’s talk about Aka Manto, Japan’s most murderous toilet ghost.

The Legend of Aka Manto: The Wrong Answer Could Kill You

Aka Manto is not your average ghost, but often described more of a demonic entity or yōkai who lurks in public restrooms, particularly school bathrooms. Very often it is in elementary schools in a specific stall in an older or not often dark and forgotten toilet, especially the older squat toilets. It is often the fourth stall that is the cursed one as the number four is associated with death. 

The legend of Aka Manto goes something like this:

After Aka Manto asks if you want red or blue paper, you only have bad choices. If you say “red paper” (赤い紙, akai kami), Aka Manto will slice you apart, drenching the walls in your blood. You die in a pool of your own gore, forever staining the stall red.

If you say “blue paper” (青い紙, aoi kami), Aka Manto will strangle you to death, draining your face of blood until you turn blue. Some versions say he sucks the life out of you, leaving nothing but a pale, cold corpse.

Trying to be clever and bring your own paper? Bad idea, as it will vanish mysteriously. If you ask for a different color like yellow, Aka Manto drags you into the underworld, and you are never seen again. If you try to run away? The stall door won’t budge, and your fate is sealed. If you stay silent? He kills you anyway. Basically, once Aka Manto asks the question, you’re doomed, in most cases.

Origins: Where Did This Nightmare Aka Manto Come From?

Like all great urban legends, Aka Manto’s origins are murky. He’s been around for decades, at least since the 1930s in Nara City, terrifying generations of schoolchildren and unsuspecting restroom-goers. In 1940, the legend spread to Kitakyshu and even reached the Korean Peninsula under Japanese rule because of Japanese students. At least the legend of the red paper and the blue paper was a well known legend, but when did the red cloaked man appear in the story?

One theory is that Aka Manto was once a man—maybe even a student—who wore a red cloak and a mask. Some say he was handsome, but so obsessed with his looks that he wore a mask to keep people from seeing his face. Today, the word manto mostly means a cloak or cape and he is often depicted as this. But back when the urban legend first started spreading, manto referred to a shorter, sleeveless kimono jacket. 

Others say he was a vengeful spirit, hunting down those who disrespected him in life. Whatever the case, he died tragically—and now he haunts bathrooms, forcing his victims to “choose their fate.”

The Unsolved Murder Creating Aka Manto

In some versions he was a serial killer and Ako Manto is said to be connected to The Aogetto Murder Case in 1906 in what is today Sakai city in Fukui Prefecture. A man in his 30s wearing blue, in some variations red, came to a shop as a messenger and asked Kaga Murayoshi (30) to follow him to help his sick aunt in Shinbo village. Murayoshi trusted him and followed.

The man used the same method to lure his mother, Kiku (59) and his wife, Tsuo (25) as well. He tried to take the two year old daughter as well, but the mother had asked a neighbor to look after her. The woman refused to let him in when he came to the door, asking for the daughter. The eldest daughter was spared as well, as she was babysitting another house. 

They never returned, and the relatives in Shinbo village said they were not sick and had not asked for a messenger. Behind the Murayoshi family home, they found bloodstains in a boat by the Takeda River, finding Tsuo and Kiku’s bodies floating in the river, but never finding Kaga’s body. 

Although they believed this murderer must have had a strong hatred for the family, they could never find any motives for it or suspects. The case is still unsolved.

Was this a true murder case however? For most it’s considered a legendary one more so than a true murder mystery, as most details of the case changes every retelling as well there have been no original sources or documentation about the case. 

Inspired by Paper Doll Kamishibai Play

There is also a theory that the story of Aka Manto came from a mix of several real crimes mixed with popular media at the time.. One being the rape and murder of a young girl in Yanaka in Tokyo, although proof of a specific case has not been found. The other one comes from a harmless story from a popular kamishibai play at the time called Aka Manto by Kōji Kata. It told the story about a gentleman wizard in a red cloak that takes a shoeshine boy as his apprentice. 

Mixing these two stories together created fear and a commotion in Osaka and the kamishibai was confiscated by the police because of it. There are however different tales about what year it was confiscated, if it was in 1936 or 1940. 

Kamishibai: Meaning (紙芝居, “paper play”) is a form of Japanese street theater and storytelling that was popular during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the postwar period in Japan until television took over. Kamishibai were performed by a kamishibaiya (“kamishibai narrator”) who travelled to street corners with sets of illustrated boards that they placed in a miniature stage-like device and narrated the story by changing each image. In Ōkubo, Tokyo, the legend form tells of a vampire during the Shōwa era in the early 1900s. Corpses started appearing after being attacked by someone in a red cloak. 

This vampire theory is most likely connected to another story. Some say the urban legend is actually from a socialist banker in the 1930s to unsettle people and that he was arrested because of it. The motive is uncertain and a little bit random. If this actually happened is uncertain though, as it’s just a memory from a novel by Nobuo Ozawa. There are however real news clippings talking about a similar case about a communication employee, not a bankman.

In the wartime imperial capital, there have been many malicious rumors circulating, such as rumors that are disrupting politics and the financial world, and the story of the “Red Cape Hunchback” who is sucking blood that spread from Oji to the entire city, which are causing fear. The Metropolitan Police Department Intelligence Division has decided to carry out a thorough crackdown on these rumors to eradicate them from their source. On the 25th, it notified each police station under its jurisdiction to carry out strict inspections and internal investigations, while the Second Investigation Division also cooperated with this, and since the 23rd, a certain communication employee, Tomonori Tsune (38), of 3363 Oikurata-cho, Shinagawa-ku, has been detained and interrogated by Inspector Kobayashi. Other Theories Behind the Red Cloaked Man

One theory of the ghost of Aka Manto comes from a rumor from Osaka around 1935. It said that a man in a cloak would appear in a dimly lit shoe locker in the basement. A year or two after this it spread to Tokyo and further and turned into the urban legend we know of today. A similar legend circulated in Kobe in the 70s and 80s about someone, or something, wrapping children in a red blanket and abduct them into the demon realm. 

The Toilet Ghost Phenomenon: Why Are Bathrooms So Haunted?

If you’ve noticed a pattern, you’re not alone—Japan has way too many bathroom ghosts.

Because bathrooms are liminal spaces—places where people are alone, vulnerable, and isolated. Plus, back in the day, Japanese toilets were dark, creepy holes in the ground. If anywhere was going to be haunted, it was the bathroom. There are also the cases of toilet gods from more ancient times that used to be worshiped. 

Toilet Gods from Older Days

To understand why there are so many legends of spirits haunting the toilets in Japan, we must understand the folklore that existed before the ghost stories. In Japan, as well as many other cultures, Toilet Gods and deities were popular and worshiped from the Edo period until the early Showa period. This is in large part because of the association between human waste and agriculture, therefore making the toilets a fertile ground so to speak. Toilets were often dark and unpleasant places where the user was at some risk of falling in and drowning. The protection of the toilet god was therefore sought to avoid such an unsanitary fate.

According to a different Japanese tradition, the toilet god was said to be a blind man holding a spear in his hand. The Ainu people of far northern Japan and the Russian Far East believed that the Rukar Kamuy, their version of a toilet god, would be the first to come to help in the event of danger.

Most often, it was a benevolent god, but it happened, like in Okinawa, that the God could become a place of haunting evil spirits. The fuuru nu kami, or “god of the toilet” from the Ryūkyū Shintō of the Ryukyu Islands is the family protector of the area of waste. The pig toilet, lacking this benevolent god, could become a place of evil influence and potential haunting because of the accumulation of waste matter, rejected and abandoned by the human body. This version of the spirits residing in toilets is more reminiscent of the Korean Cheuksin (厠神): South Korea’s Vengeful Toilet Goddess.

Toilet Gods and Colored Papers

In Kyoto, it is said that if you go to the toilet on the night of Setsubun, a monster called Kainade (Kainaze) will appear who will stroke your buttocks, and that if you chant “Red paper, white paper,” you can avoid this supernatural occurrence; there is also a theory that this evolved into a school ghost story. In Makabe County, Ibaraki Prefecture, it is said that blue and red, or red and white, paper dolls are offered to the toilet. 

Such stores of a spirit and colored papers being offered in the bathrooms have plenty of old tradition in Japan.

Originally, the act of offering to the gods changed to “I’ll give you some paper, so don’t behave suspiciously,” and the toilet god became more of a yokai over time, with people asking, “Shall I give you red paper, or blue (or white) paper?” 

After the war, there were a lot of old traditions that were left behind, and created the foundation for new ones. Gods and goddesses became ghosts and spirits, and only the skeletons of the legends reminiscent the old tales. 

Can You Survive an Encounter with Aka Manto?

Aka Manto is one of Japan’s deadliest urban legends, a spirit that proves you’re never truly safe—even in the most private places. But is there an end to the legend where you actually will survive?

If asked about what paper you want, there are two choices recommended.

You say, “I don’t need any paper.”

 You say nothing and calmly leave the stall.

If you’re lucky, Aka Manto lets you go. If not… well, you’ll be another restroom horror story.

So the next time you step into a restroom, especially one with a suspiciously empty last stall, ask yourself:

The Legend of Toire no Hanako-san: The Ghost Haunting School Toilets in Japan

For decades now, students have been terrified of the encounter with Hanako-san, the toilet ghost said to haunt the bathrooms in Japanese schools. Said to have died in one of the stalls, she now lures students into their death. 

In the dimly lit bathroom on the third floor in the school building, there is a third stall believed to be haunted. No one ever uses it, but someone dared you to go to it. It’s just a game, they said, and curious, you wanted to see for yourself, if the story is really true. If you knock three times on the third door and ask “Hanako, are you there?” you will hear a faint voice answering from the inside. “Yes,” the voice says. 

The door opens and a girl with short hair and a red skirt drags you into the bathroom, never to come out again. 

Urban School Legends: Japan have a rich universe of urban legends and ghost stories set at their school, on their way to school. Many of them are the product of a specific fear in society, some are remnants of old folklore and tradition. The tale of the toilet ghost, Hanako-san looks to be a bit of both.

The Legend of Hanako-san

Hanako-san’s origins are a mystery wrapped in a horror story. There have been many versions of the school ghost story of Toire no Hanako-san (トイレの花子 (はなこ)さん), meaning Hanako oof the toilet, over the years. 

Unlike some ghosts that belong purely to folklore, Hanako-san’s story has adapted to the times. She appears in horror movies, manga, anime, and video games, keeping her legend alive and well. In fact, she’s so famous that even outside Japan, people know her name. She’s been compared to Bloody Mary, Slender Man, and even the Girl from The Ring—but Hanako-san came first, and she’s still one of the most feared spirits in Japan.

Toire no Hanako-san is often described as a young girl with a short bob and wearing red, often a red suspender skirt or school uniform with a white dress shirt, making her visual constant figure throughout the many variations of her legend and origin.

School Uniform: Although not explicitly stated, the appearance of Hanako-san is most likely a school uniform, naturally so as she was said to be a student dying in the school bathrooms. Her colors of red and white however seems to be from much older times and is the same colors they used when worshiping the ancient toilet gods.

The Victim of Bullying

The modern version of the toilet ghost in Japanese girl’s schools bathrooms paints Toire no Hanako-san as a victim of relentless school bullying. Through the many versions of Hanako-san, it seems the way she died reflects a real threat the current society focuses on and fears. Is this the students biggest fear in modern times?

Humiliated and tormented, Toire no Hanako-san sought refuge in the bathroom, where she ended her life. Now, she haunts the very place where she was last seen, waiting for someone to notice her.

The Girl Killed in the Bathroom

Another version suggests Hanako-san was the victim of a violent crime, perhaps another fear that really took hold of parents and students in the more modern era of Japan, after the war ended. Toire no Hanako-san was hiding in the bathroom from someone out to hurt her. 

In some version it was from an abusive parent and she had her hair bobbed like that to hide the scars from the beating. 

Some say that she was hiding from a deranged killer. No matter who it was, they found her. Some say she was stabbed, others say she was strangled—either way, Toire no Hanako-san never made it out alive.

The World War II Bombing Tragedy

One of the most widely accepted tales places Hanako-san’s death in the 1940s, during World War II and is perhaps one of the earliest iterations of the urban legend. In 1944, the alarm went off and she was hiding in the school bathroom during an air raid. In some versions she was too afraid to leave the bathrooms. Some say that the children were playing hide and seek and she was hiding in the toilet and didn’t even hear when the alarm went off.

A bomb hit the school building, with most children having been safely evacuated. But Toire no Hanako-san was trapped, and the bomb killed her in the stall as the school burned down. Her spirit never left the toilet.

Other Origins Stories From Around Japan

Who was Toire no Hanako-san originally? What was her true name and where does she come from? There are origin stories from all over Japan, all claiming that this is where it all started. Some say that the legend started after a young girl fell to her death from a library window in Fukushima. Or an elementary school student who fell through an open drainage hole and died. 

In a television program, 巷のウワサ大検証!それって実際どうなの会, aired in 2025 investigating urban legends, they claimed that she was a ghost by an evacuated girl who went missing in 1944 and a boy saw her ghost in the third toilet. The following year on 3rd of March snow blocked the toilet and somehow killed several students. Some say that she is buried in a garbage dump at a school in Saitama Prefecture or behind the gymnasium at a school in Tokyo.  

Hanako is also not only haunting toilets, as there is a story called Hanako of the Persimmon Tree. This story tells about a young girl picking persimmons and giving them to a nursery home. But on the way, she died in a traffic accident and became a ghost, haunting the Persimmon Tree. 

When Did the Legend Start?

The Legend has been around for a long time now, and is traced back to at least the 1950s. Along with many urban legends at that time, it gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s when children spent a lot of the time at school and an occult revival boom swept over Japan, making people particularly interested in urban legends and ghost stories. 

But what happened in the 1950s that created this legend?

Often the gods were given red or white girl dolls and flower decorations in the toilets. Today the tradition of worshiping toilet gods more or less gone, although toilets are often still decorated with flowers. This has also been a theory as to why Hanako is said to wear white and red clothes. Also her name, Hanako (花子), which consists of two Japanese letters meaning “Flower” and “Child” is said to come from this belief.

Although most toilet gods are of a very masculine figure, there are examples of an old goddess from China that might have influenced the legend as well. The story of The Lady of the Privy, the Purple Maiden or Zigu as she is called, was said to be a concubine who was killed in the toilet, coming back as a toilet ghost.

After the war, there were a lot of old traditions that were left behind, and created the foundation for new ones. Gods and goddesses became ghosts and spirits, and only the skeletons of the legends reminicents the old tales. 

Other Toiler Ghosts

Believe it or not, Hanako-san isn’t the only terrifying restroom spirit in Japanese folklore. Bathrooms, especially in schools, seem to be prime ghost real estate. Maybe it’s the isolation, the eerie silence, or just the general creep factor of public restrooms, but whatever the reason, Hanako-san has some supernatural company.

Other Bathroom Horrors in Japan:

Aka Manto (赤マント, “The Red Cloak”)

A male and malevolent spirit that appears in school restrooms and is said to preferre the last stall in the women’s toilet in school and public restrooms. Once you sit down for business you hear a male voice and asks you a simple question:

“Do you want red paper or blue paper?”

Pick red? You’re slashed to death, covering the walls in blood.

Pick blue? You’re strangled until you turn blue.

Pick neither? You can try to run, but many say he kills you anyway.

Kashima Reiko (加島礼子) or Teke Teke

A ghost with no legs who haunts school restrooms. She lost her lower half in a train accident, and now she crawls around, asking people where her legs are. She is also haunting urban areas and train stations at night, often then called Teke Teke, the sound she makes by dragging herself on her hands and elbows.

If you don’t answer correctly, she’ll cut off your legs and take them for herself.

Clearly, Japan takes its bathroom horror very seriously.

Summoning Hanako-san: A Dare You’ll Regret

In later years, a game was created around the legend of Hanako-san. If you’ve got a death wish (or just an unhealthy curiosity), you can summon Hanako-san—but be warned: not everyone who calls her walks away unscathed.

Here’s how it works:

Find a school restroom—specifically, the third stall of the third-floor girls’ bathroom.

Knock three times on the stall door.

Ask: “Hanako-san, are you there?” (花子さん、いますか?, Hanako-san, imasu ka?)

And then?

If she’s not there, congratulations, you live another day.

If she is there, you might hear a soft giggle, a faint whisper, or the distant echo of a child’s voice saying, “Yes, I’m here.”

If you’re really unlucky, the stall door slowly creaks open, revealing… something you should never have seen.

What happens next depends on the version of the legend:

Best-case scenario? Hanako-san just disappears. Worst-case scenario? A pale hand reaches out, dragging you inside the stall—where you vanish forever.

In some legends you can ask her to play a gay, and she agrees, asking what to play. If you say “Let’s play choking”, she will actually be choked to death… again. 

In Yamagata they probably have the most bonkers version of the legend where you call out Hanako when you leave the toilet. If she responds in a displeased voice, you know something bad will happen. They also have a variation of the legend where Hanako-san actually is a three meter long lizard that eats anyone when it lures them towards it with its girly voice. So that is that…

In Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture there is Hanako san in the girl’s toilet and a Yosuke-san in the boy’s toilet. If you walk around the toilet three times in the boy’s toilet and call out for Hanako-san, a bloody hand will appear from the toilet. If you call out his name, you have three seconds to run away, or you will be killed.

Why Is Hanako-san Still So Popular?

Despite being a legend that dates back decades, Hanako-san refuses to fade into history. She still haunts schools today, with students daring each other to summon her, and rumors of real sightings still circulating.

So, let’s be honest: if you ever find yourself alone in a Japanese school at night, standing in front of the third stall on the third floor…

Are you really going to knock?

Maybe. Maybe not.

But if you do, and you hear a soft giggle from behind the door, I suggest running. Fast.

Because Hanako-san is waiting.

And she never left.

The urban legends of Teke Teke and Kashima Reiko are often so similar, they are thought to have merged or started together. Both of them warn about a vengeful spirit without legs, crawling her way to her victims, only letting you go if you can answer her riddle. 

Japan has no shortage of eerie urban legends, but few are as unsettling as the story of Teke Teke, (テケテケ), a ghostly entity known for its horrific appearance and chilling modus operandi. This tale, often shared among schoolchildren and horror enthusiasts, tells of a vengeful spirit, also classified as an onryō, whose origins are rooted in tragedy and whose presence is marked by a haunting sound—the ominous “teke-teke” noise she makes as she drags her mutilated body in search of victims.

The name given to the ghost is often said to be Kashima Reiko, although she is only one of the many variations of the legend. The urban legend has many variations and the spirit goes by many names, almost making the story of Teke Teke a type of ghostly fate for many different people across Japan. In almost all of the legends though, seeing her apparition, will most likely seal your own fate. 

Kashima Reiko: The urban legend of Kashima Reiko and Teke Teke are often told together. In 2009 a movie based on the urban legend of Teke Teke came out.

The Legend of Teke Teke

The story of Teke Teke centers around a young woman who met a gruesome fate, often said to be the ghost of a school girl. While variations exist, the most common version tells of a girl who fell—or was pushed—onto the tracks of an oncoming train. The impact severed her body at the waist, leading to her untimely and agonizing death. Being far north in Japan on a winter night, the extreme coldness made her veins freeze and the bleeding to stop. She was kept alive for a while like this, calling out for help, clawing her way up from the rails. 

In some versions she could have been helped, but the station staff and onlookers did nothing, or at least not enough and she died of her injuries. In some versions, the staff saw her and covered her with a tarp where she died slowly. 

Unable to find peace, her restless spirit is said to wander at night, often said to haunt old train stations and dark alleys. dragging her upper torso with her hands or elbows, making a distinct “teke-teke” sound against the ground.

It is believed that anyone who encounters Teke Teke is doomed to die. Many say she will appear to you three days after hearing the story if you don’t forget. She is said to move at unnatural speeds, capable of chasing down even the fastest runners and even cars. Her fingernails turned into claws she drags herself around with. When she catches her victim, she slices them in half, mirroring her own grisly demise. Some versions of the legend suggest that she carries a scythe or other sharp weapon, ensuring that her revenge is as brutal as her death.

Background for the Legend of Teke Teke

Teke Teke: (テケテケ) is a 2009 Japanese supernatural horror film directed by Kōji Shiraishi and written by Takeki Akimoto with a sequel following it. Based on the Japanese urban legend.

Teke Teke is often said to have been a school girl from Northern Japan, mostly said to be Hokkaido. Although very cold in the winter, there is no way it’s so cold to hold a decapitated person alive for a long time. Also, the way a train hits and injures a person, will most likely not result in this type of injury anyway.

It could be however, that this part of legend comes from an actual suicide at Akabana Station in Tokyo back in 1935. A woman threw herself in front of the trains and her legs were cut off but didn’t die because of how they were crushed under the train wheels. She was talking with the train conductor, but died after being taken to the hospital

In some variations Teke Teke is a school student, sometimes she is a grown woman. Often her ghost story is morphed to mirror the age and surroundings of those telling the story. Stories told about Teke Teke being a student are often connected with school bullying, and that she ended her life by leaping in front of a train. This way the legend exists as a sort of cautionary tale of bullying, although her vengeance is seemingly not only limited to bullies.  

She is often classified as an Onryō, a type of vengeful spirit of Japan that are often considered to be some of the most dangerous spirits in Japan, created out of hatred and coming back back for revenge to those who wronged them in life

The story of Teke Teke has been around for decades now in many variations and points of origin. Seemingly a merging of many stories that predates the current one. It seems like it could be inspired by, or at least connected with the tragic story of Kashima Reiko haunting public bathrooms, especially in schools.

The Connection to Kashima Reiko

Teke Teke is sometimes linked to another well-known Japanese ghost, Kashima Reiko, more connected with school bathrooms and toilets. Kashima Reiko’s story shares similarities with Teke Teke, as she is also a vengeful spirit with a severed body. It looks like the story of Kashima Reiko predates Teke Teke, although it looks like today, more people know about the Teke Teke version perhaps. Because of the bathroom connection, her story is often told together with the ghost of Hanako-san.

According to legend, Kashima Reiko is the ghost of a woman who died in Hokkaido, sometimes in Muroran, suffering a similar fate of being cut in half by a train. Most stories start at the end of World War II, or the period after. She was said to be an office worker and attacked and rape by an American soldier stationed there after the war. Some say that the attack happened in a public restroom and that 

The assault was severe, a doctor found her and saved her life, but she had to amputate her arms and legs. Her vanity made her so shocked by her new body, she jumped in front of the train to take her life. In many variants of the legend, she wasn’t an amputee, but the shame and depression after the assault made her take her life.

Today it is always told to be a woman, but when the stories first circulated, the story of the amputee was also said to sometimes be a male military veteran. This is often connected with the shrine in Kashima City where many soldiers visited to pray for victory during the war. Many yokai’s, or ghosts, are often forgotten gods and that this could be one of these instances of the war of God, Takemikazuchi. The shrine was also relocated in 1972 in Hokkaido, about the same time the Kashima story started spreading. 

There are also those claiming that Kashima Reiko is a version of the Slit-Mouth-Woman, scaring children since the 1970s and that the name of this ghost was actually Kashima Reiko. Before 1970, the story often went: A creature came knocking on the door, asking the one opening the door if they needed a leg. If you answered no, it would cut off one and carry it away. If you answered yes, an extra leg would grow on your body.

Unlike the other variants of Teke Teke, her spirit is believed to haunt bathrooms exclusively, where she asks unfortunate victims questions about her death and where her legs are. Although not said to have died in the toilet, ghost stories of spirits haunting them are fairly big and many in Japan. 

How to Avoid Teke Teke and Kashima Reiko

In some versions, you can survive the encounter with Kashima Reiko if you answer with the phrase: “I need them right now”, where she will follow up with: “Who told you my story?” A riddle, you’re supposed to answer with: “kamen shinin ma“, or “mask death demon” which may be the phonetic root of Kashima’s name. People also say that if you answer that her legs are on the Meishin Expressway, the main way between Osaka and Nagoya.

If they fail to answer correctly, she kills them in a manner similar to her own demise. Some believe that Kashima Reiko and Teke Teke are actually the same entity, or at least different interpretations of the same tragic ghost story.

Like many Japanese urban legends, there are superstitions about how to avoid an encounter with Teke Teke. Some claim that she can be warded off if one answers her questions correctly, while others insist that saying certain protective phrases can save potential victims. In Kashima Reiko’s case, it is said that answering her question about where her legs are with the phrase “They are on the Meishin Expressway” can appease her spirit and spare one’s life.

The Cultural Impact of Teke Teke and Kashima Reiko

Kashima Reiko and Teke Teke’s legend is one of many yūrei (ghost) stories that permeate Japanese folklore, demonstrating the country’s long-standing fascination with spirits, death, and vengeance. Her story has been adapted into movies, manga, and even video games, keeping her terrifying presence alive in popular culture. Some say that if she catches you, you will turn into Teke Teke yourself. 

Teke Teke or Kashima Reiko is not just a tale meant to frighten children—she represents the fear of sudden, tragic death and the idea that spirits can return with unfinished business. Her legend continues to be passed down through generations, evolving with each retelling but always keeping the same terrifying essence: once you hear the sound of Teke Teke, it may already be too late.

Many Spanish parents spook their children by cautioning them about El Coco, a Boogeyman monster who snatches children away if they misbehave or refuse to sleep. It has also been associated with a horrible crime that was like a manifestation of the old legend.

Origins and Cultural Variations of the El Coco Legend

The legend of El Coco has its roots in Galician Spanish and Portuguese folklore, but it has spread to various countries and cultures around the world, each with their own unique variations. 

In Spain, El Coco is often depicted as a dark, shadowy figure lurking in the night. Some say that he appears on moonless nights and puts lying children in a sack and turns them into soap.

Other cultures have their own versions of the legend, such as the Bogeyman in English-speaking countries and the Sack Man in France.

Terrifying Tales and Encounters with El Coco

Throughout history, there have been numerous chilling tales and alleged encounters with El Coco. These stories have been passed down from generation to generation, fueling the fear and fascination surrounding the legend. One such tale recounts the story of a young boy who was abducted by El Coco and never seen again. The boy’s parents claimed to have seen a dark figure with glowing eyes and a black cloth bag lurking outside their home on the night of the abduction.

Perhaps the most terrifying thing about this is that it is well in with a horrible real crime that happened to a child. 

The Real El Coco Francisco Ortega

A real person that has been associated with El Coco was Francisco Ortega. In 1910 he lived in Gador in Spain with no family, alone in his house. He had tuberculosis and was near death. 

At the time there was no cure for tuberculosis, but Ortega didn’t want to die. He went to a healer called Francisco Leona that also practices black magic. He told Ortega he needed the blood of a child and 3000 reais to pay the healer. 

They kidnapped a seven year old named Bernando from his house and put him in a sack. Leon cut the child’s heart out with a knife and crushed his head with a rock. They drank his blood, put his heart in a jar and used his body to make a medical paste. 

Leona got rid of the body with the help of Julio. But Julio didn’t receive any payments so he went to the police and turned them in. They were all arrested and sentenced to death.

As the legend goes, at the turn of the twentieth century, a young man, sometimes given the name Foster, traveled the trail on a chilly autumn evening. To his surprise, he encountered a young woman clad in rags, wandering barefoot through the ancient forest. Driven by kindness, he extended an offer to drive her home, a gesture she graciously accepted. After safely depositing the mysterious woman at her doorstep, the young man continued on his journey. Yet, the memory of the beautiful hitchhiker lingered, a ghost in his thoughts.

Unable to shake the enchantment, the man returned to her home the next day, seeking to reunite with the captivating Lucy. When he inquired about her with Lucy’s mother, he received a chilling revelation that sent shivers down his spine.

“I gave Lucy a ride home last night, and I would very much like to see her again,” the young man explained.

“That’s impossible!” exclaimed the mother. “Lucy passed away many years ago.”

The urban legend of Veronica Jaja is almost like the Spanish version of Bloody Mary. Say her name three times into the mirror and you will get a visit from the spirit behind the mirror. But why would you risk it as she is mostly there to take your life?

This urban legend of Veronica Jaja seems to have come up pre internet in the early 20th century shares a lot in common with the Bloody Mary game and legend and is one of the Ghost in the Mirror games that is a legend about a ghost trapped inside of a mirror that can be summoned by uttering its name out loud a number of times.

According to the legend she is summoned after speaking her name 3 times into a mirror. Veronica Jaja will then appear and take your life. She comes as a dark figure and immediately starts to strangle those who summoned her, and she wont stop until she has killed them. 

Those who do survive this ordeal though are said to be haunted by nightmares for their entire life. 

According to the legend, there are plenty that summoned Veronica Jaja for fun, only for it to be the last thing they did. It is said that more than one have been found dead in their bedroom without sign of struggle. 

The Girl who Played with the Occult

But who is this Veronica that is summoned through the mirror? There are variant legends. One of them is that Veronica was a young girl herself that god mixed up in the supernatural. She was a teenage girl that played around with something she shouldn’t have, most often it is said that was a ouija board. 

Through her careless game with the occult she managed to invoke some evil spirits and the next day she was found dead. Because of her lack of respect she became trapped between the world of the living and dead and became the very thing she tried to play around with. 

The Girl with the Beautiful Hair

Another version was that she was a vain girl with wonderful hair she brushed a hundred times every day. All she cared about was her hair, and she loved to stare at it in her mirror.

One day a man hid in her closet to play a prank on the girl with the beautiful hair. When she sat in front of her mirror and brushed her hair, he came out and held her mouth with a handkerchief so she wouldn’t scream. Then he cut off all of her precious hair. 

She was too distraught to look at herself in the mirror without her hair after the attack. Because of her trauma she killed herself. In this version she can be summoned by looking in the mirror while brushing your hair 100 times as you summon her spirit by calling out her name three times. 

Connected with a real case?

The many variations of the Veronica Jaja game can remind a lot of what happened to the real Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro. She was a teenage girl that was found dead in her home without an explanation in 1991 in Madrid, before the growth of the urban legend of Veronica Jaja throughout the 90s. 

According to her parents they blamed it on her fondness of the occult and it was said that she had played the ouija board game not long before her death as a way to contact her friend’s boyfriend that had died in a motorbike accident. 

Seeing that many variations of the urban legend started to circulate in the late 90s, it is highly likely that these two things are connected. It was made into a movie based on her death and strange circumstances around it named: Veronica. 

Veronica Jaja the Witch

There is however, a long history concerning these so-called ghosts in the mirror, and there are those stories that predate the death of Estefanía Gutierrez Lázaro in the 1990s and we did have several stories about the ghost in the mirrors long before the 90s as well. 

In this version her origin is much more vague and a lot older. She is sometimes called a daughter of Satan or a witch that was burned at the stakes centuries ago. 

Some variations of the legend centers around a young woman named Veronica Jaja from northern Spain, who was accused of practicing dark magic and witchcraft and burnt to death for her crimes.

During the Spanish Inquisition, thousands of men and women were accused of practicing witchcraft and sorcery, like in the case of the Basque Witch Trials or the Witches of Zugarramurdi case that happened in Northern Spain. The fear of the supernatural and the unknown led to mass hysteria, with innocent individuals being persecuted and executed.

The witch trials served as a backdrop for the creation of many urban legends, including the Veronica Jaja legend. The tales of witches and their alleged powers became ingrained in the collective consciousness of the Spanish people, giving rise to stories that would be passed down through generations.

Popular Variations and Retellings of the Veronica Jaja Urban Legend

Over the years, the Veronica Jaja urban legend has evolved and taken on various forms. Different versions of the story have emerged, each with its own unique twists and turns. One popular variation of the legend tells that if you say her name 5 times it will make her more powerful and make her appearance more likely to happen. 

There are also those that swear to say her name backwards or in reverse order will also help those that desperately need her. 

Similar Urban Legends from Around the World

While the Veronica Jaja urban legend may be unique to Spain, similar tales can be found in different cultures around the world.

The closest one is probably the Bloody Mary legend, and this too seems to have roots to much older history, tracing back to Tudor times in Britain with the Mary Queen of Scots who were known to have burnt countless people on the stakes to earn her name. But also with this legend, there are now so many variants that sometimes even cross over with each other and it is difficult to claim what came first

In Japan, there is the legend of Hanako-san, a ghostly figure who haunts the school bathrooms. Like Veronica Jaja, Hanako-san is said to appear when summoned, bringing fear and unease to those who dare to invoke her name.

Ghosts of locals from the Pocomoke State forest as well as mysterious balls of light and impossible dark legends, the countless tales from this haunted forest in Maryland keep piling on, making this perhaps one of the most busy as well as haunted forests in America. 

Between Snow Hill and Pocomoke City in Maryland, the Pocomoke State Forest harbors more than just the natural beauty of the landscape on the Eastern Shore. The over 18 000 acre big forest comes with a chilling reputation that locals often share in hushed whispers, this forest is deemed off-limits after sundown, as tales of eerie encounters and ghostly apparitions weave through the trees.

The forest is often called the true Blair Witch Project forest, as it is perhaps the most well known haunted forest in Maryland where the iconic horror movie also took place. Pocomoke State Forest is shrouded in unsettling stories, with reports of women’s screams and infants’ cries echoing in the night. When people get out of the forest, they find strange marks on their cars, like the mark of a hand and at night, the forest closes. 

Its reputation is further steeped in creepy urban legends, including accounts of mysterious fireballs illuminating the darkened woods. However, it’s the tales of ominous disappearances and untimely deaths that send shivers down the spines of those who dare to explore.

The Drowned Ghosts of Pocomoke State Forest

The very word, Pocomoke comes from the Agonquian language to mean broken ground. Historically though it was thought to mean Black Water and it is said that the water is totally dark thanks to the light not passing through the bald cypress trees. 

Many tales of the ghosts haunting the forest are said to be the souls of those that drowned in the river or the swampy waters. Like the case with Joby Emmons and his son who were getting on their boat, but the son fell into the water and couldn’t get out. The father jumped in after him to rescue him, but they both got trapped under the boat and drowned.

People claim that they have seen the spirit of Joby Emmons and his son walking along the river of Pocomoke State Forest.

Another group of people haunting the swamp areas are the children between the slaves and slave owners. There are countless of stories where the slave owners raped their slaves and if there was a child born, they took the children out into the swampy forest and drowned them. Many hikers claim to have felt the touch of something small or seen little shadows gliding through the trees. 

The Sea-Captain and his Family Haunting the Forest

Many hikers and campers claim that they leave Pocomoke State Forest with mysterious handprints on their cars. What is strange is that the handprints look like it got six fingers, something a vicious Sea Captain who lived around these parts was said to have. It is believed to be him haunting the forest after his death after he murdered his family.

The place of the haunting is said to be centered around Cellar House Plantation that are still standing. It was built in 1666 and was said to have been built by a French Sea Captain for his wife, or at least bride to be. 

He came back from the sea once though and found her pregnant, or having a child already, one that wasn’t his. It was a local man from Pocomoke City. He threw her out of the house and told her to never return. 

She did though, as she had no place to go, trying to beg him for forgiveness. She had her baby with her and came down on a raft in the water. It tipped close to the house though and her baby drowned. She managed to swim to shore though, but was not saved.

In some versions of the story, the Captain was even the one drowning the child by throwing the baby into the river. Her estranged husband dragged her to the bedroom where he stabbed her to death and fled the scene of the crime into Pocomoke State Forest, never to return and be seen ever again. 

As mentioned, one of the recurring things that people report they hear in the haunted forest is the sound of a woman screaming as well as a baby crying, reliving their final moments. What happened to the Captain after he murdered his family is uncertain, but he is rumored to be haunting the forest still. 

The Heavy and Cursed Bible

Deep in the Pocomoke State Forest there once was an old church called Nazarene Church at the entrance to the Pusey Branch Nature Trail in the forest. It was a Methodist Church at the end of the 19th century. Today there is only an abandoned cemetery left as the building of the church was moved to Furnace Town in 1980. 

According to the legends, there was perhaps a cursed Bible found inside of the old church, or perhaps just a little bit haunted. Many people tried to steal this hidden Bible when they found it and ran through the forest with it, but they never got far. 

Apparently the Bible got heavier and heavier with each step you took until you dropped it and it ended up where it originally was. Whether the Bible even existed is uncertain as well if it came with the building to Furnace Town, or were left someplace at the old site. 

The Haunted Furnace Town

But what is really Furnace Town? This part of the Pocomoke State Forest has many spirits lingering where people come back with tales of seeing ghostly figures, hearing disembodied voices and other paranormal things. 

The ghost town that now is turned into a museum, and was built around the Maryland Iron Companies Nassawango Iron Furnaces in 1832. At its height Furnace Town used to employ hundreds of people. They also used slaves to do the hard labor and most ghosts seen are said to be the spirit of the slaves. 

Most known ghost said to haunt this place is the former slave, Sampson Hat, or Sampson Harmon. It is said that he was one of the slaves that worked in the mines and smelting ore in the big furnaces. By 1847 the furnaces closed down and people started to move away and the town started to be a ghost town. 

The only one who didn’t move was Sampson Hat who lived in the abandoned Furnace Town alone. The civil war came and passed, freeing him, but he still didn’t leave. According to some historical accounts he was born in 1790  at Nassawango Hills and was a free man working at Furnace Town to take care of his wife and children. 

He came to think of Furnace Town as his true home and it is said he stayed at the same place, even when his family left. He lived there until his death at 107 or 104, depending on who is telling the story.

Before he died he spent a year at the Alms House in Snow Hill. Before passing he said he had to be buried at Furnace Town, but after his death, his wishes were not heard and his body was buried elsewhere. But according to the local legends, his spirit remains and is still haunting the old town as well as Pocomoke State Forest. 

It is also said he is followed by his cats he collects and brings with him as his companions. You can hear him wandering around, calling out for Stormy which he calls the cats.

Reports about him were told a lot during construction of the former ghost town when they started to restore the town and turned it into a museum from the 1960s.

The Ball of Fire

Another strange thing reported in Pocomoke State Forest is the sighting of different elementals and no human spirits haunting the forest, taking different shapes and forms. One version told is the haunting of a big fiery ball. One version talks about the priest Paul Walker holding a revival in the forest around Pine Ridge in 1921. Some husbands were unhappy about their wives’ conversion and gathered to get the priest. They went to the church to burn it down and beat the priest up, but when the leader of the group opened the door to the church he stopped. 

A ball of fire came from the rood and split in two and went down on each side of the church. This sight scared the men and they ran off. 

The story about a fiery ball is also recounted in a legend about a man driving through Pocomoke State Forest going to Snow Hill. Ahead of him was a bright object that came close until it was around 30-35 yards from him. 

The car stopped suddenly and he was too afraid to say anything or do anything as the object looked like a bright yellow box. He was trapped in this standstill for around 15 minutes before the object drifted into the woods and off the road. As soon as the object was gone, the car started again and he managed to drive away. 

The Goat Man

Any haunted forest needs its monster stories. Like the Bigfoot or The Jersey Devil Pocomoke State Forest has the Goat Man of the Pocomoke River. It is said to be a creature with a mans body, but the head of a goat with horn.

The creature runs through the forest, eating the fishes in the river and the small animals in the forest. Not many sightings have been done of the Goat Man, but it is said you can hear him stepping on twigs and bushes in places that no man can walk. 

The legend about the Goat Man is told throughout Maryland and also thought to live in Pocomoke State Forest around Prince George’s County in Maryland. The story about the Goat Man has been told for decades, perhaps even longer. In the 1970s, a student did a project about the lore behind the creature where they also discussed that the origin of the Goat Man could be traced back to the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

According to this version of the legend, the Goat Man was once a scientist working there called Dr. Stephen Fletcher.. During an experiment it mutated the scientist into the creature. It is said that he was attacking cars around Beltsville, around two hours drive from Pocomoke State Forest.  

The Classic Urban Legend of the Boyfriend’s Death

Another thing with Pocomoke State Forest is that it is said to be the place of many famous urban legends from modern day America. 

One unsettling narrative involves a couple stranded with an empty gas tank in the heart of the forest at night. As the boyfriend ventured out to fix it, the girlfriend dozed off in the locked car, oblivious to the scratching noises on the car roof that started sometime during the night. 

When she awoke it was the next morning and her boyfriend had still not returned. She finally heard the sound of the scraping on the roof. She got out of the car and a harrowing sight awaited her – her boyfriend hanging by his feet over the car, his feet scraping the roof. His head was placed on the trunk of the car.

This urban legend is a pretty worldwide phenomenon by now, and has been so for decades now. According to Snopes, the earliest documented version of this legend was in 1964 by a student studying at the University of Kansas. It still is an all time favorite to tell in Pocomoke State Forest

Hook Man of the Pocomoke State Forest

This urban legend has also been told with the story of the Hook Man that has been told as far back as the 1950s, possibly being even older. In this legend, they were driving or parked somewhere in the woods as a news bulletin comes on the radio and warns them about a mental asylum patient having escaped and can be recognized with a hook as a hand. In this version it is from the Cambridge State Hospital. 

In this version of the urban legend, he is mad at those who disturb the Pocomoke State Forest. The girlfriend gets scared and makes her boyfriend drive her home. As they are in the forest they hear strange things in the bushes and when they get home, they find a hook wedged into their car door handle.

The Bus Driver

Another urban legend told is coming from Pocomoke State Forest is the haunted bus. A school bus was taking a shortcut through the forest once when they experienced engine troubles and the bus had to stop. The bus driver went outside and tried to fix it, but strange things started to happen to the bus. 

The sound of something walking on the roof of the bus started to scare the children and they saw ghostly and monstrous faces in the windows. The teacher accompanying them told them all to close the windows and went to the front of the bus to find the bus driver and get them out of there. The only thing the teacher found was a skeleton by the front of the bus. 

The teacher slammed the door shut and got into the driver seat and drove them all back to the school when the bus started working again. 

This story is a little bit more difficult to pinpoint where it comes from though.

A Stay at the Haunted Pocomoke State Forest

The trees seem to reclaim the old legends and places, but the spirit and ghosts remain. Pocomoke State Forest becomes a realm where the line between the living and the supernatural blurs, beckoning both the curious and the cautious to delve into its haunted mysteries.

Urban legends coexists with old ghost stories and both human spirit as well as something inhuman are said to roam around the trees.
