On the rails of Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station in Kolkata people claim to have seen and heard ghosts from the departed both on the platform as well as in the tunnels. Who can be haunting the station otherwise known as ‘Paradise of Suicide’?

The Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station (রবীন্দ্র সরোবর) in Kolkata known as the city of joy, holds a chilling reputation as one of the most haunted places in the city. Along Kolkata’s bustling metro line 1, this station, found on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee road, derives its name from the nearby Rabindra Sarobar, an artificial lake. Yet, behind its mundane facade lies a sinister reputation earned from the tragedies that have unfolded within its confines.

The underground station built in 1986 has earned the grim nickname of the “Paradise of Suicides” due to the alarming number of individuals who have taken their own lives by leaping onto the tracks over the last couple of decades. Shockingly, it’s estimated that a staggering 70 to 80% of the metro’s suicides occur at this particular station, casting a shadow of despair over the station.

Supernatural Encounters on the Rail

Adding to the eerie atmosphere are the numerous accounts of supernatural encounters reported by commuters and station staff alike. Many claim to have felt an otherworldly presence lingering in the air, with sightings of ghostly apparitions and inexplicable shadows haunting the station’s platforms. Distorted figures have been spotted moving aimlessly before vanishing into thin air, believed to be the tormented souls of those who met their end in tragic circumstances.

Commuters passing through Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station have recounted hearing unsettling cries and moans, echoing through the deserted station late at night, while others have described witnessing ghostly movements inside the trains themselves, especially on the last train for the night.

Ghost Wandering the  Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station

One of the many stories about strange things happening at the station was shared online about a guy that saw a good looking man on the station. The man approached him and asked him to take his picture, but vanished into thin air.

When the guy asked around, there was an older man that told him about a young man that wanted to become a model, but his parents tried to pressure him to become a doctor instead. He committed suicide at the station and now his soul is haunting it, trying to make people to take his photo. This story was originally posted on Instagram, and many people in the comments shared similar experiences. 

The Metro Drivers and Ghosts

Even metro drivers and station attendants have attested to these eerie occurrences, with sightings of ghostly figures and footless apparitions causing delays and disruptions to train services at Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station. 

From an article back from 2015, a driver talked about when he recently had to stop the train when he was crossing Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station. According to him, he had seen someone inside a tunnel, but on closer inspection, there was nothing there. Was it a ghost? Perhaps access to the tunnels is too easy for the living? Either way, the ghost stories are whispered.

As the clock strikes 10:24, the station falls silent, devoid of any living soul daring to linger amidst the spectral entities that are said to roam its empty corridors. Though these ghostly figures are said to have never harmed anyone, their presence alone is enough to send shivers down the spines of those who dare to tread near this eerie locale.

Today, the metro in Barcelona is one of the most efficient ways of traveling around in the city. The metro has gone through many changes since the first trains started running. There are today many of the old lines and stations that have been abandoned and closed off where only the huge rats and nests of cockroaches live. It is said, though, that you can get a glimpse of them when passing by through the windows in the dark tunnels. And it is said the same with the ghosts said to haunt the metro.

The Haunted Metro Lines: In Barcelona there is not only one of the stations that are said to be haunted. But most reports about the supposed hauntings comes from Rocafort Station on Line 1.

The Cursed Line: Rocafort Metro Station

One of the most haunted metro lines, perhaps even the most haunted location in Barcelona, is the Line 1 to Rocafort and Rocafort Metro Station that opened in 1926. This old metro station on the red line in Barcelona is said to be cursed, as many suicides happened there. 

During the construction of Rocafort Metro Station, a mudslide occurred, resulting in the deaths of 11 workers when there was a collapse at Urgel station. This tragic event set the stage for the supernatural happenings that would follow. The station also served as a refuge during the Civil War, adding to its dark history. The combination of these events has created an atmosphere that is ripe for paranormal activity.

A Series of Suicides on the Metro Station

At one time, there were as many as four suicides in a month in the 1970s. The history of tragedy surrounding this station dates back to its conception.

Nobody wants to work in the place, especially at night. For a period of time there was a string of suicides at the station in a very short period of time. In one month it is said that four people took their own lives on the rails. 

On the TV monitors, static people that don’t appear in real life are walking along the platform, even long after the last train had passed and the station was closed down. They weren’t found on any of the other stations and look like they have just disappeared into the dark underground tunnels. 

The Hauntings of Rocafort Metro Station

The haunting stories surrounding Rocafort Metro Station are numerous and spine-chilling. The staff working at night claim to see ghosts walking on the platform as well as along the tracks. People have reported capturing recordings of these ghosts on the station’s surveillance cameras, adding a layer of eerie evidence to the stories.

The Urban Legends of the Underground: As with many other metro station worldwide, the tale of the murdered passenger is also told in Barcelona. According to the legend, a young student was heading home on the train and the train was empty except an older woman and two men carrying a woman between them. The older woman told the student to get off at the next stop, and when they exited, she told that the woman between the two men were in fact dead. A similar story is also told about The Disappearance of Bus 330 in Beijing.

One particular sighting that has left a lasting impression is when a medium saw that of a child playing with a ball on the platform. The chilling aspect is that the station had a child who tragically died a couple of years ago when the ball fell onto the tracks, and the child went after it. This encounter raises questions about the nature of these apparitions and their connection to the tragedies that have occurred at Rocafort Metro Station.

Another group of ghosts hanging in their afterlife at the station are blind people. The place is also said to be haunted by blind people, as many of them were trying to reach the office for the Spanish blind people Society (Once) and fell on the tracks and were run over. Since then, the station has been adapted for the blind. 

Other Supposedly Haunted Metro Stations in Barcelona

While Rocafort Metro Station may be the most infamous, it is not the only haunted station in Barcelona. There are several other stations that are rumored to have their fair share of ghostly encounters. Gaudi station never opened and is today bricked up. You can barely see the station as you pass through with the train. but people still say that they can see people waiting for the subway with an absent look on their face, waiting for a train that will never come. 

Ghost Stations: One of the ghost stations you can see on your way to the current Sagrada Familia station. It is said that ghosts are sitting there at the abandoned station as if they are waiting for a train.

Correo Ferran, and Travessera Correos are among the stations where paranormal activity has been reported. Each of these stations has its own unique history and legends, contributing to the rich tapestry of haunted tales within Barcelona’s metro system.

The Haunted Metro Stations on Hong Kong MTR’s Island Line

It is said that more than one station on the MTR’s Island line in Hong Kong are haunted. One of the most well known urban legends are the ghost suicide at the metro in Hong Kong at the Yau Ma Tei Station. It is also one of those rare cases where the urban legend came from a very true story. 

Today the metro in Hong Kong is a convenient transportation method that can take you from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon as well as to the New Territories. 

There are more than one story from the dimly lit underground of Hong Kong that have a more supernatural take. Disappearing train, women in white leaping in front og the trains and construction workers still roaming in the tunnels.

And one of the stories in this article has yet to be completely debunked. Here is a look at some of the allegedly haunted metro stations on the Hong Kong underground.

The Ghosts of the Construction Workers at Rumsey Station

Rumsey Station: MTR Sheung Wan Station passageway (Rumsey Station reserved platform)

There are more than one stop on the metro that are said to be haunted since the construction on the tracks started in the late 1960s. Like Rumsey Station, an abandoned platform by Sheung Wan station. The Rumsey Stations platforms are located near Exit E, forming part of the passageways between the concourse and the open platforms, and they run perpendicular to the Island line platforms below.

They said that during construction there were so many fatal accidents that they had to abandon the project. Allegedly the ghosts of the construction workers can be seen and their screams can be heard around the East Lobby in the night. 

Another story is that a worker there had seen a woman in white falling off the platform. Even after Sheung Wan station opened in 1986, there were stories of passengers who faced the same fate in the unopened station.

The Mental Patient at Whitty Station

MTR had planned to build Whitty Station as part of the Island Line, but the project was also abandoned. Some say that it was because of all the paranormal things happening during construction. Where Whitty Street Station would have been is now the HKU Station (formerly named Shek Tong Tsui Station). 

There have also been claims that construction workers hear the screams inside of the Whitty Station tunnels. When they investigated the claims, they allegedly found a woman dressed in white on the platform that leapt onto the tracks when they approached her. 

People have since speculated that it could be a patient from the nearby mental hospital, who have also a couple of haunted rumors. It used to be called High Street Mental Hospital, but today it is called Sai Ying Pun Community Complex. The Train that Disappeared at the Choi Hung Station

At the Choi Hung Station there are three, not two railway tracks like the other stations have and if we are to believe the legends, it is because of something dark. According to one urban legend, when they used the middle railway track, they found out the hard way that apparently this was a track leading directly to hell. 

The story goes that when they constructed it the engineer decided it was time for a test run and brought some people along. They were supposed to drive toward Kowloon Bay Station, but after a good 30 minutes, they still hadn’t arrived and they had lost contact with the train. 

The missing train did arrive at last though, but there was something wrong with the passengers. The people onboard seemed disoriented, some even passed away after they were being sent away to the hospital. It wasn’t clear what was wrong with them other than pure shock and fear. 

When they investigated it they brought along a medium to help them shed light to the strange case. The medium claimed that the track led straight to hell and that the passengers had all seen something they would never recover from. 

Because of this, they abandoned the track and built new ones that would lead to the meant destination and not pass through hell. Although the hellway track has been seen to be used to transport trains to the depot in Kowloon Bay at the end of the day.

The Ghost Suicide at Yau Ma Tei Station

Most of the hauntings in the underground stations can somehow be explained with a more rational and factual origin. But the ghost story from Yau Ma Tei Station is something a little more strange and difficult to explain. In November 1981 things were going fine at the MTR and the Yau Ma Tei Station. Passengers were coming and going as the trains stopped to pick up their passengers and take them away to their destination. 

On this day though, something happened that no one has really been able to explain and even made the news. Passengers on the train reported seeing a young woman falling into the tracks at the station as one of the trains was rapidly approaching and running over her. 

The passengers on the platform as well as the staff claim to have heard her screams as she was hit by the train and the driver of the train remembers the horrible bump as she ended up under the train. 

They called for medical aid and sounded the alarm that a horrible accident had just happened. When the medics arrived to help, they didn’t find anyone. There was no young woman on the train tracks, not even a drop of blood could be spotted. 

A Collective Hallucination in the Dark Tunnels

What was this strange incident about? The investigation couldn’t find anything and the whole thing was called a collective hallucination as more than one present at the station had witnessed it all. 

There is also speculation of it being a ghost of a woman that maybe didn’t die that day, but had so in the past and now relieved her dying moments as a ghost. 

When the story came back in 2012 in internet forums, a writer decided to dig into the story. The writer claims that someone contacted him and said that the person on the tracks back then was really a living 22 year old woman wearing white that fell into the tracks. In this version though she survived it all and is allegedly alive to this day as well.

Line 1 is the oldest and most used train line in the city since it opened in 1971. The Red colored metro line has some stories to it though – some say it was so haunted that an exorcism was required when they started building it. 

The Beijing Subway System

The Beijing Subway system is not just an efficient way of transporting commuters around the city – it also comes with some mysterious stories that will have you on the edge of your seat. From spirits to ghosts, tales of strange encounters abound in this underground labyrinth – with many passengers claiming to have experienced something extraordinary while riding along Metro Line No. 1. 

According to legends, people have disappeared into the tunnels and simply vanished into thin air, never to be seen again, and some people claimed that something sinister had pushed passengers onto the rails. Whether true or not, these spine-tingling stories have given Beijing’s subway a supernatural twist.

Metro Line No. 1 was mired in mystery from the very beginning when construction workers encountered strange events that seemed to be of supernatural origin. Some workers reported seeing apparitions and hearing eerie sounds coming from deep within the tunnels as they were working and it looks like the passengers are still experiencing some form of paranormal stuff when commuting. 

Others even alleged that ghosts had instigated mysterious accidents which led to costly delays in the building process. Despite this, the exorcism seemed to have worked as the subway lines have only expanded over the years. Or perhaps it has expanded only despite the paranormal stuff happening in the underground labyrinth? 

History of the Haunted Subway in Beijing

Beijing’s subway system has quite a long and mysterious history of haunting since they started construction back in 1965. Legend has it that when Line No.1 was being built, construction workers encountered multiple strange occurrences and dangerous accidents, broken equipment that halted the project. Some even claimed that it was because of something supernatural. 

There were multiple explanations as to why this was happening and one of them was the theory that during the construction, several bones of dead humans were disturbed and destroyed, angering the spirits.

Due to this fear of angering the spirits, they brought in monks to perform some sort of ceremony, a sort of exorcism before being able to complete the work on what would be known as Line 1. 

The Blessings and Rituals Performed by Monks

To get rid of the spirits on the Haunted Subway in Beijing, local monks were brought in to perform traditional rituals, blessings and prayers in and around the ground where subway construction was underway. The ceremonies were meant to purify the area to prevent any further hauntings and accidents. Whether or not it worked remains a mystery but one thing is certain – a ride down Line No. 1 may be an experience that will leave you with a shiver!

The ceremony went on for days supposedly and the monks advised that the last train would be at 11 pm as they thought that between 11 and 1 am was the time when the souls needed rest. They also said that the train would take a last tour without any living passenger, only to deliver the souls back to where they belonged. 

Since then, rumors have spread about encounters with ghosts throughout the subway system. Whether these rumors are true or not remains a mystery – but they certainly add some excitement to your daily commute!

The Princess Tombs at Gongzhufen Station

But what bones exactly were disturbed during the construction? There are more than one story about what graves they encountered when building the metro line. On Line 1 there is a subway station called Gongzhufen Station, or The Princess Tombs that have several local legends connected to the place. 

It is named after the tomb of two princesses from the Qing Dynasty, and when they started building in 1965, it was verified that the two princesses were Princess Zhuang Jing Heshuo and Princess Zhuang Jing Gulun, the third and fourth daughter of Emperor Jiaqing. 

The two princesses died only two months apart aged 30 and 28 in 1811, so they decided to bury them together. 

The tombs were not left alone over the years though and they had to go through tomb robbing in 1937, and finally in 1965 when the subway line was built straight through it and the tombs had to be relocated.

After this, a ghost story centered around this subway station started, when the passengers and staff started seeing a female ghost on the station platform, wearing a traditional Qing dress and sometimes being carried in a sedan chair. 

One story about the sighting of the ghost of the princesses was that a boy working in the station encountered the ghost in the middle of the night and ran off, refusing to come back and quit his job at once. This story is however also connected to the urban legend of the Yonghegong Lama Temple Station. 

The Last Train Still Leaves at 11 PM

Whether they took the monks’ advice into consideration when making the train schedule, the last train on Line 1 leaves Pingguoyuan stop at 10:55 pm. The last west-bound train leaves Sihui East at 11:15 pm. 

With the darkened passages and deserted stations, many avoid traveling on Line No. 1 after dark. The last train departs at 11 PM – any later than that and you’ll find yourself alone with only a few brave souls wandering the tunnels. The lit lights flicker and dim, surrounding you with an eerie darkness. 

Stories abound of apparitions on the Haunted Subway in Beijing, some even say they’ve seen a ghost train run empty through the long lifeless corridors. So hurry back home before the last train takes off, or else there will only be the ghost ride left with no living passengers.
