Inside of Dering Woods Nicknamed the Screaming Woods

Dering Woods in Kent, England holds many ghostly tales. Many ghosts have been seen through the foggy landscape and blood curdling screams of those haunting it are still heard to this day, giving it the charming nickname, the Screaming Woods. 

In the idyllic landscape in Kent in England, Dering Woods, also known as “the Screaming Woods,” conceals a tapestry of haunted tales that echo through its ancient trees between the small villages of Smarden and Pluckley. The small village of Pluckley, an old village found in the Doomsday book of 1086 is said to be one of the most haunted villages in the UK with as many as 12-14 ghosts. Some claim it is even over 40 ghosts.

This was an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 1989, but alas, they don’t have this category anymore as it is not easy to verify these claims. 

But here, we are limited to stories concerning the forest, not the village itself. Because who is said to be heard, screaming for their life in the dead of night inside of the Dering Woods?

Dering Woods has earned its spine-chilling moniker for a reason, as reports of blood-curdling screams emanating from its depths have become a staple of the local lore. Visitors, expecting a serene family camping trip, have been startled by the unnerving cries that pierce the night. Although today you can also join the ghost walking tours that have become popular here as the area is mostly known for being, “very haunted”.

Footsteps and mysterious whispers on foggy days add an extra layer of mystery to this already haunted enclave. It is said that the Dering Woods is filled with those that got lost inside of the forest and never got out. The place is the site of several neolithic sites that people claim bring a sort of haunted energy to it according to British Isles myths and legends. 

The Highwayman’s Lament

One of the enduring legends associated with the Screaming Woods involves an unnamed highwayman from the 18th century whose spectral presence is said to haunt the Dering Woods and the nearby road. 

According to local lore, this highwayman was captured and met a gruesome end at the hands of vengeful villagers. He was chased through the Screaming Woods when the villagers, or so called peacekeepers got a hold of him, pinned him to one of the old oak trees and decapitated him. 

This is said to have taken place close to the Smarden Bell Road that has been nicknamed the Fright Corner and is also the place were people have reported about seeing his ghost. 

The blood-curdling screams are often attributed to his tormented spirit, suggesting a lingering grudge that transcends the boundaries of the afterlife and seems to have given the forest its name. 

The Ghost of the Colonel

Another ghost said to haunt the grounds of the Dering Woods is the ghost of an army officer that in the 18th century ventured into the forest and committed suicide in one of the trees in the former Park Wood that used to be an adjacent forest.

The trees are no longer there but It is said that the ghost of the 1700 soldier is still seen hanging from the trees, or some even claim he is still marching through the woods still wearing his uniform. 

No one really knows his rank, however the locals have dubbed him the Colonel. 

The Halloween Massacre of Dering Woods

Delving deeper into the annals of Dering Woods’ haunted history, another tale emerges—the mysterious Dering Wood Massacre of 1948 found on many of the high ranking paranormal blogs as well as most haunted lists in magazines like Conde Nast Traveler. But how many of these more recent tales are actually true? 

The first story goes like this: On the morning of November 1, a dog walker was out in the woods where he made a horrifying discovery. Locals were left in shock as 20 lifeless bodies were reportedly discovered in a pile inside of the Screaming Woods. Eleven of the dead victims were children. They were all identified as villagers from the nearby Maltman’s Hill area. 

The previous night, Halloween, had been marked by strange lights emanating from the woods, creating an eerie backdrop to the unfolding tragedy.

Autopsies failed to determine a cause of death, adding to the mystique surrounding the event. There were no wounds og signs of struggle that could point to what they died of. What they did settle on though after a few weeks was that they had all died of carbon monoxide poisoning. 

The public were not satisfied with these answers though and there have been many questions and speculations after it all. One of them was the possible involvement of the police forces as they closed the case down too quickly. 

In 1964, there was a private investigator that did a deep dive into the mystery. Robert Collins interviewed and speculated that it could be an unknown religious cult in Smarden village close to the Dering Woods. 

His investigation became inconclusive though as he died in a car accident that year. 

The Missing Students

The Halloween Massacre was not the last time something strange and tragic happened inside of the forest. On a Friday on November 6th in 1998 the residents of Pluckley reported about some strange strange lights coming from the Screaming Woods. It was described as “Figures of light resembling a spider’s web.”

That night, four university students went missing after they went camping in the woods. They were never found.

Creepy Pasta Lore that Evolved

But how real are these stories really? Both of them are, according to sources and those taking a deeper dive into the stories, said to have originated on the internet as creepy pasta in 2015 or around then. 

The stories have both been made to scare and amuse people, but many seem to have taken them to heart and as actual events. With the in depth “sources” the creepy pasta have used with pictures and everything, it could fool many. And with the rate bloggers keep copy and pasting things without further investigations, these stories have often been passed around as real events.

But when looking closer to the supposed news articles confirming the stories, we see many things that points to this being fake. The British newspapers use American spelling, as well as adding a website to it. 

The image used as a source of the Smarden Post news article about the massacre is actually a picture of Lithuanians and Soviet Union officers standing together after the first excavations of 20 murdered Jewish men in Utyan in Lithuania in 1944. Source to original picture and its history.

The picture used for the 1998 case with the missing students is actually a photograph from an 2008 article in The Telegraph about Puckley being one of England’s most haunted villagers.

Tomino’s Hell — The Cursed Poem

The supposedly cursed poem known as Tomino’s Hell has been a famous creepypasta for a long time and an urban legend before that. But what is the truth behind the dark and twisted poem?

A popular Japanese urban legend is about Tomino’s Hell,トミノの地獄. It is a poem that is said you should only read in your mind, never out loud. It follows the tradition of Bloody Mary and Candyman that words hold power, and sometimes it can hurt like hell. 

It is said that if you dare read Tomino’s Hell out loud, a certain and agonizing death will follow the reader as the poem is said to have a curse lingering between the lines.

The Legend Passed Around About the Cursed Poem

But who created this supposedly cursed poem that are said to have even killed people?

The legend is that Tomino, often thought to be a boy, lived in Japan and wrote the poem. He was a sickly child and sat in a wheelchair. The supposedly cursed poem is pretty gruesome at some parts and his parents didn’t approve of it at all when they found it. Because of the hellish content of the poem, they locked Tomino in the cellar, not feeding him and he eventually died of bronchitis. 

The poem was from then on cursed with Tomino’s spirit and anger imprinted in every word, ready to come to life when reading it out loud. 

The Origin of the Tomino’s Hell Poem

This is obviously just the legend that is created of the legend of the legend. In fact we do know quite a bit about the actual writer of the poem, and he wasn’t thrown in a cellar to die because his parents thought the poem was too grim. 

The Writer: Yaso Saijō, 西條 八十 is the original writer of Tomino’s Hell that he wrote in 1919.

The poem is originally written by Yaso Saijō, 西條 八十, when he was 26 years old in a  collection of poems in 1919 called Sakin or Gold Dust. He was a university professor that studied at Sorbonne in France and had a long literary career.

Although most of his work was really geared towards children, making nursery rhymes and was recognised as one of the three great nursery rhymes of the Taisho period. He was for example the one introducing Alice in Wonderland in Japan, making Tomino’s Hell a work not like anything else from Yaso Saijō. Because this particular poem stands out as much darker and twisted than the average poem you read out loud.

There are many theories about the poem and why it was created in the first place. Many say that Yaso Saijō wrote the poem after the death of a family member as a way to express the feeling of sorrow and despair. His original intent is now lost though, and we are only left with his written words and the legend they created.

How could this poem from the turn of the century ended up being seen as a cursed poem many decades later? There is not a specific thing that is said to happen, but most often comes with a warning that ‘bad things will happen’. Most commonly, you are supposedly dragged to hell. 

What is the Cursed Poem about?

If you are curious about the whole poem of Tomino’s Hell, a translation into English is included at the end. but in summary it seems to tell the story of a little boy and his journey into hell. There are also many references to war and a descent into darkness and loneliness. 

Tomino’s Hell: The painting commonly associated with the poem ‘Tomino’s Hell’ was not created with this specific poem in mind. It has been attributed to an artist named Yuko Tatsushima and was supposedly designed to represent death or suicide but not as they relate to the poem. The painting is called ‘I don’t want to be a bride anymore.’

The Deadly Poem

The effects of the cursed poem are many, but alas, not well documented, but it is often accidents, loss of their voice, illness and in the worst scenarios, death. A young girl supposedly died a few moments after reading the poem out loud, but when, who she was, is never discussed. This also goes for the rumors of the university students dying after reading it also. The question is, did anything happen to those reading the poem?

What we do know is that a man made a movie called To Die in the Countryside ( 田園に死す, Den-en ni shisu) in 1974, it was much based on the poem of Tomino’s Hell. The movie itself is an eerie and confusing experience of adolescence much like the poem. The writer and director Terayama Shuji ( 寺山 修司) died in 1983 and people have since speculated that it was because of the coursed poem.

Pastoral: To Die in the Countryside: Poster from the movie. Also known as Pastoral Hide and Seek, is a 1974 Japanese drama movie with a film-within-film structure, about a young man battling with the film he is trying to finish like a reimagination of his adolescence.

Although we know that Terayama died early at 47, nine years after the movie came out, he died of a liver complication of a liver disease that he had been battling since he was a teenager. And he didn’t even quote the poem in his movie, but was only influenced. Is that enough to invoke the curse? 

When we got to the 80s, there was a trend of filming when friends read the poem out loud. This also became a trend in the early 2000s across forums of users writing that they were going to read the poem out loud, but then never came back to post how it went. 

The poem was read out loud many times throughout the writer’s lifetime without it doing anything to the writer who lived a long life. So according to the legend lore, the writer himself can read Tomino’s Hell out loud without the backlash of the curse?

It wasn’t until by Yomata Inuhiko, 四方田 犬彦, in his book of poem The Heart is Like A Rolling Stone, 心は転がる石のように, he called out the poem in 2004. Yomota claimed that the reader would suffer a terrible fate, but rumors about the dead director and the students were already whispered about under the surface. And at the dawn of the internet, the poem got resurrected and was sent frequently in forums with the curse attached to it. 

Tomino’s Hell Translated to English

Perhaps the feeling of sickness from reading Tomino’s Hell is something we can attribute more to the poem itself and the eerily feeling it leaves you with. And it perhaps isn’t the power of a curse people feel the sickness off, but the power of word. 

The English translation of the poem has been mostly done by people just trying to get the point across. However, when translated and spread on a global scale, it often shows up in a vacuum without any history of both the real writer and the history from the previous decades before the internet. There are certain games that makes you laugh, that are just for fun. Then there are the games that makes your skin crawl, that makes your blood pumps. If you haven’t already, head over and have a look at part one of this series:

Games to play in the dark

A collection of five games to play in the dark. Or not, depending how in touch with the spirits one feels.

This is a list of games that have been played for a long time, or new. Some are old in its new form. Many of these games are best played in the dark in the middle of the night, far from any other sounds. Some you are tired of, as we do with old games, some are always a welcomed suggestion to do.

Darumasan or The Bath Game

Darumasan ga Koronda is an equivalent to the American Red light/Green light game or the British Grandmother’s Footsteps. It literary means ‘the daruma fell over’. And like the weeping angels version on this child’s game, the Japanese version also has a more sinister version.

Traditional Toy: A Daruma doll (達磨, daruma)

A Daruma doll is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll. Though considered a toy by some, Daruma has a design that is rich in symbolism and is regarded more as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. It also holds some spiritual symbolism as well. Daruma dolls are seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular gift of encouragement.

The Darumesan or today known more as ‘The Bath Game’, is a sort of ritual game of summoning evil. It is said it is summoning a girl that slipped in the tub and poked her eye out. That is why the ghost of her only has one eye. It was difficult finding an original source as it is a game supposedly old, but of Japanese origin. The oldest mention on this was on certain Japanese forums from the 2011/2012 that talked about it as an urban legend. Seems like the game evolved as a sort of protection against it.

What follows here however, is how the game has been played in later years.

It is a one player game and only require on thing: A bathtub.

Part One

Before you go to bed, take a bath with the light turned off. Face the tap, close your eyes and begin to wash your hair.

While washing, repeat the words, Daruma-san fell down. Continue to wash your hair, chanting this and do not open your eyes.

This is when you will start getting a mental image of the woman in the tub, slipping ang falling face into the tap and poke her eye out. Do not turn around if you hear a noise behind you, do not open your eyes to check if you feel movement in the tub. But ask out loud: “Why did you fall in the bathtub?”

After this, get out of the tub without opening your eyes. Without draining the water, leave the bathroom, shutting the door behind you.

Now go to sleep.

The minute you open your eyes, the game has begun. Throughout the day, you will feel a constant presence behind you. Turning to look at her will not work, but you might catch the occasional glimpses of her lingering over your right shoulder, her hair black and tangled, her eye socket empty and hollow.

As the day press on, she will etch closer and gloser to you. If she is too close shout Tomare, meaning stop and run. However, for each time you shout this at her, the less effective it will be.

Part Three

At the end of the day, it is time to end the game. Look directly at her over your right shoulder, sever the bond you have created between you two.

Shout: Kitta, meaning something along the lines of ‘I cut you loose’. While saying this, swing your arm in a chopping motion. You must have her in sight while doing this.

Done correctly, the game is now over. If not, well… it is recommended to run away.

Also:

Some claim to avoid dark and places with a lot of water.

The ending mus be done before midnight, or else, you are granting her permission to stay and enter your dreams.

When doing the game a second time, it is said she will start were you left her off. Hopefully, she was far enough away from you. It will not be as easy to escape her otherwise.

11 Miles Game

This is also a game, of online presence and can be traced back to username Emeryy on creepypasta. The original creepypasta story has now been deleted in 2018 on the authors request. It is however narrated by a Youtube Narrator and is probably pretty close to the original creepypasta which is writte as a sort of instruction to a game.

It is a bit different game as it is clearly a work of fiction. However, there is something about the classical mythical journey that will reward all of your desires if you just stick to the rules that keeps the appeal, still after the story itself is deleted.

The game is suppose to help you get a prize after following a set of rules on a road that isn’t technically there. It is a magical story game and balances the fine line of thrilling adventure to creepy nightmares.

Before you Begin

There is some things to consider before starting the game. First, the game is about desire and finding something you are looking for. So you are suppose to have a goal or a wish before you start.

It is a game of solitude and can only be played alone. Oh, and by the way, you will be needing a car. It was specified in the creepypasta it shouldn’t be a very noticeable car.

Then there is the list of stuff you can’t do. If you do it, you will fail the test and can’t claim the prize. Besides, there is something lurking outside your car. You won’t find out what happens with those if you break the rules. They are as follows:
– Do not turn on the radio or cellphone
– Do not open the windows or try to leave your car
– Do not drive over thirty miles per hour

The Game

Fuel up your car and start driving when night falls and few people are around.

Finding the road is difficult, it isn’t on any maps, shouldn’t exist and can’t be located by asking around. You will only find it when aimlessly driving around, preferably near a forest. It will appear different for everyone.

Once you’ve found the road, take a turn and drive it. This is were the test comes in. The air will appear colder and figures will appear in the darkness. Ignore them and keep your eyes on the road.

When you reach the dirt path of the road voices will begin whispering. Ignore them as well. When reaching a clearing you will find an endless lake with a bright moon hovering over it. Do not look at the moon.

Now the radio will start acting up, the headlights will start to fail. Ignore it all don’t look in the mirror. Eyes on the road, remember the speed limit.

When you have driven around nine miles, your car will fail. This is not something you can fix. The only thing to do is close your eyes and restart the car. Figures will surround your car, but don’t look. Just restart the car. When reaching ten miles, all will go back to normal.

On the eleventh mile however, your car will stop again. But it will still move. Move towards a red light. Close them again, and cover your ears. The once cold air will become hot.

But don’t worry, it will end. You will reach a dead end. Then take a minute, relax, imagine what you desired, perhaps it changed during the journey. It will then appear before your eyes or happen soon enough.

After the Game

If you follow all of the rules, you will be fine, your journey will end. And you’ve overcome the tests, making you worthy of the prize.

From then on, you will suffer from terrible dreams, but it will be worth it. Or… will it?

Before the internet became a mix of streaming platform, influencer’s paradise, music streamer, podcast heaven, news broadcaster, gossip channel and a gold mine for those wanting to live of doing crazy stunts or cry into the camera – before all this, it was this weird place of the worlds weirdest home videos and the place were urban legends were in making. This is some of them.

Sonee – The Scariest Picture on the Internet

When it hit Youtube in 2006, it was already a thriving legend in China. It told the story of Sonee, the artist of this picture which she uploaded before killing herself. Now, the picture is haunted, altering if you stare at it long enough to see the changes. This was an excellent way to spend five minutes, just sitting, staring into the screen for five minutes, waiting for something to happen. The story never really died though, as it kept popping up as creepypastas, chain mails, forum threads, and even on the New York Times as well.

In reality the picture is another example of how art is stolen, never credited, but still popular. It was originally made by Robert Chang, an artist, and the name of the character was princess Ruu, an original character of his story Tellurian Sky. And according to a blog, the fact that someone stole his character like that, kind of bugs him a lot.

Dining Room or There is Nothing

In 2006, a great year for weird videos, this trip of a movie hit the page. Surreal art was perhaps not that well known for being on Youtube at the time and the viewers didn’t really know how to place it. Of course, this clip had to be curse. Since then, the video has topped so many lists of creepy videos.

The video is actually made by David Earle, and on his web page he explains the bizarre concept. “When looped, there is no actual beginning or end, and no real sense of where the beginning and end actually are. This piece was inspired by a personal paradoxical desire for empirical proof that there is nothing on the ‘other’ side of life. I wanted to blur the distinction between the two states, and to state the paradox by showing someone who is coming back from life (or death), and denies its existence, thereby fulfilling the paradox.”

A Curva – Teresa Fidalgo

This one still pops up from time to time, either as a clip, a screenshot on Snapchat, a chain mail (which actually still goes around i suppose.) Still, no one has managed to actually debunk this found footage clip, as the first search results of Teresa Fidalgo is stuff like: Is it true that Teresa Fidalgo will sleep by your side?, How did Teresa Fidalgo Die?

In reality the idea was conceived by Portuguese film maker David Rebordão when he went around promoting another movie. Today, the world is perhaps a bit too saturated with the found footage clip, but back in the day, this was the bomb.

Ghost Girl

Still popping up on videos compiling: ‘unexplained videos’, the clip is up and thriving. The simple shot of an amateur shot of a silhouette of a girl in a dark hallway, is more effective than the most expensive movie set could give. It is still something that flashes before many peoples eyes every time they open a door to a dark hallway.

The user that uploaded this years ago, had some other clips along the lines of: ‘crazy ghost video’ style, but even more strangely, there has never been a big reveal like with the other videos. Nothing of the likes of: ‘this was a great prank by me and my daughter’ or anything. Makes it… Well. Scary.

The Swedish Rhapsody

A weird sound, a cute ice cream car music and a German girl counting. Creepy as hell. And this was found when browsing the radio. And when it hit the digital world, it became a case study of all kinds of conspiracies. A polish radio haunted by the ghost of a German girl from the war, you name it.

However, perhaps this is the one video, were the truth could be seen as more sinister or scary than a ghost haunting a radio station ever could. Because the thing with number stations, is that they are completely real, and most likely, used by intelligence agencies. The sounds are codes or messages trying to reach spies, warning them, or keeping them up to date.

This is a list of games that have been played for a long time, or new. Some are old in its new form. Many of these games are best played in the dark in the middle of the night, far from any other sounds. Some you are tired of, as we do with old games, some are always a welcomed suggestion to do.

Light as a Feather

This is a very old game. Or rather, more than a game, perhaps we would call it more of a party trick in these days. But it has been played as far back as in 1665, at least! It is still popular today, in modern day, most popularized by the books and HBO series by the same name.

The game is a circle of children (or adults, hey!) that invokes a spirit or something to lift someone lying down in the middle. When it works, it is af the child can lift their friend with only one finger.

Rules

One participant lies flat on the floor, and then the others space themselves around him or her, each placing one or two fingertips underneath the participant’s limbs. The person closest to the head commonly begins by saying, “She’s looking ill,” which is repeated several times, and followed by, “she’s looking worse,” which is also repeated several times. The general direction of the call-and-repeat describes how the prone person is looking worse and worse, followed by saying “she is dying,” and, finally, “she is dead”.

All versions of the game end with the phrase “light as a feather, stiff as a board” chanted by the entire group, as they attempt to lift their companion’s body using only their fingertips. Some versions omit the story entirely and only the “light as a feather…” chant is used. Allegedly, after these repetitions, the person being lifted will seem lighter or even entirely weightless.

Another variation of the game takes place with one person seated in a chair. Four volunteers agree to stand around the sitter, two on the sitter’s left side and the other two on his/her right. Each of the four places two fingers under each corner of the chair’s seat and the four together will attempt to lift the chair and sitter, which generally fails. The volunteers will then perform some small ritual, usually involving rubbing their hands together or circling the chair in various direction (counter-clockwise, walking backwards, etc.) After this ritual, the volunteers hold their hands over the sitter’s head to “transfer” energy into the sitter, which will presumably make him/her weightless. The lifters then retry lifting the sitter the same way as before. Also, it can be that the lifters lift the person sitting in the chair; doing the rest of the ritual as so but holding at the four main points of the body (Under the knees on each side and under the shoulders.)

Bloody Mary

A classic tale, probably a bit boring if you have played it a million times. But the game is old and have been played in many different times. Perhaps one should try that? Perhaps it would work better then? Or… better not.

Historically, the divination ritual encouraged young women to walk up a flight of stairs backward holding a candle and a hand mirror, in a darkened house. As they gazed into the mirror, they were supposed to be able to catch a view of their future husband’s face. There was, however, a chance that they would see a skull instead, indicating that they were going to die before they would have the chance to marry.

In the ritual of today, Bloody Mary allegedly appears to individuals or groups who ritualistically invoke her name, repeatedly chanting her name into a mirror placed in a dimly-lit or candle-lit room. In some traditions the name must be repeated thirteen times (or some other specified number of times, very often 3 times in movies, probably to save time). The Bloody Mary apparition allegedly appears as a corpse, witch or ghost, can be friendly or evil, and is sometimes “seen” covered in blood. The lore surrounding the ritual states that participants may endure the apparition screaming at them, cursing them, strangling them, stealing their soul, drinking their blood. 

Some variations of the ritual call Bloody Mary by a different name—”Hell Mary” and “Mary Worth” are popular examples.

The Hyakumonogatari Kaidan

This one is a pretty cool one. Although it excact origins are a bit unclear, it was believed that it was first played among the samurai class as a test of courage in old Japan.

The game was played as night fell upon the region using three separate rooms. In preparation, participants would light 100 lights in the third room and position a single mirror on the surface of a small table. When the sky was at its darkest, guests gathered in the first of the three rooms, taking turns orating tales of ghoulish encounters and reciting folkloric tales passed on by villagers who claimed to have experienced supernatural encounters. These tales soon became known as kaidan. Upon the end of each kaidan, the story-teller would enter the third room and extinguished one light, look in the mirror and make their way back to the first room. With each passing tale, the room slowly grew darker and darker as the participants reached the one hundredth tale, creating a safe haven for the evocation of spirits.

However, as the game reached the ninety-ninth tale, many participants would stop, fearful of invoking the spirits they had been summoning.

Oujia Board

This is a rather facinating story of spiritualism, capitalism and a great scam that made people millions, and billions scared of a board game. But that must be another time. The game itself is pretty fun, even though people still swear of its demonic and spiritual powers. The official owner of the official Oujia Board is Hasbro, and this is the official rules from Hasbro (the owner of the patent).

Set up

  • If desired, set the mood by dimming the lights or turning them off.
  • Before using the Oujia Board, wipe it with a dry cloth to remove dust and moisture.
  • Sit opposite another player or gather around the board if more than two are playing.
  • Set the Ouija board either on the players laps or on a small table between and within reach of the players
  • Additional players are encouraged to look on and take note of the Oujia Board’s responses.
  • Set the Planchette in the center of the Oujia Board.
  • Place two fingers lightly on the Planchette.
  • Now, concentrate

What now?

Players take turns asking questions and all should agree to the question being asked. Ask only one question at a time. Ask your questions slowly and clearly. And wait to see what the Planchette spells out for you.

If nothing happens, try asking another question. Allow one to five minutes for an answer to come.

The Midnight Game

Ok, so this one bugs me, and it thrills me. It has been a huge success and got its own movie, but still. Well, anyway, it claims to be a pagan ritual, not specifying though, what pagan religion considering every other religion beside the religion you follow is pagan. But anyway, considering it isn’t any trace of this game from before the 2010s, it is highly unlikely. But fun nonetheless. But there are a hell of lots rules, so we will just post them as they are written on the creepy pasta page so not to make any mistakes.

Instructions

PREREQUISITES:

It must be exactly 12:00 AM when you begin performing the ritual. Otherwise, it will not work.

MATERIALS:

You will need a candle, a piece of paper, a writing implement, matches or a lighter, salt, a wooden door, and at least one drop of your own blood. If you are playing with multiple people, they will need their own of the aforementioned materials and they will have to perform the steps below accordingly.

STEP 1:

Write your full name (first, middle, and last) on the piece of paper. Put at least one drop of blood on the paper. Allow it to soak into the paper.

STEP 2:

Turn off all of the lights in the place you are doing this. Go to your wooden door, and place the paper with your name on it in front of the door. Now, take out the candle and light it. Place it on top of the paper.

STEP 3:

Knock on the door twenty-two times. The hour must be 12:00 AM upon the final knock. Then, open the door, blow out the candle, and close the door. You have just allowed the “Midnight Man” to enter your house.

STEP 4:

Immediately relight your candle.
This is where the game begins. You must now lurk around your now completely dark house, with the lit candle in your hand. Your goal is to avoid the Midnight Man at all costs, until 3:33 AM. Should your candle ever go out, that means the Midnight Man is near you. You must relight your candle in the next ten seconds.

If you are not successful in doing this, you must then immediately surround yourself with a circle of salt. If you are unsuccessful in both of your actions, the Midnight Man will create a hallucination of your greatest fear, and rip out your organs one by one. You will feel it, but you will be unable to react.

If you are successful in creating the circle of salt, you must remain in there until 3:33 AM.
If you are successful in relighting your candle, you may proceed with the game. You must continue to 3:33 AM, without being attacked by the Midnight Man, or being trapped inside the circle of salt, to win the Midnight Game. The Midnight Man will leave your house at 3:33 AM, and you will be safe to proceed with your morning.

ADDITION:

Indications that you are near the Midnight Man will include sudden drop in temperature, seeing a pure black, humanoid figure through the darkness, and hearing very soft whispering coming from an indiscernible source. If you experience any of these, it is advised that you leave the area to avoid the Midnight Man.

DO NOT turn any of the lights on during the Midnight Game.

DO NOT use a flashlight during the Midnight Game.

DO NOT go to sleep during the Midnight Game.

DO NOT attempt to use another person’s blood on your name.

DO NOT use a lighter as a substitute for a candle. It will not work.

AND DEFINITELY DO NOT attempt to provoke the Midnight Man in ANY WAY.

Even when the game is over, he will always be watching you…
