The Haunted Ocean Beach in San Francisco: The Ruins of Sutro Bath and Mysterious Cliff House

Could the entire Ocean Beach in San Francisco be haunted? And could the haunting come from all the mysterious and tragic occurrences around Cliff House and the now ruins of the once grand Sutro Bath? Could the very foundations, even the caves underneath be cursed? 

San Francisco’s Ocean Beach may be a peaceful escape for visitors, but beneath the tranquil waves and scenic cliffs lies a darker story that covers everything from mystical ghostly woman on the shore, occult artifacts and curses, satanic rituals and monsters hidden abandoned caves.

From the iconic Cliff House built upon and damaged by the many wrecked ships to the eerie ruins of the Sutro Baths, this coastal stretch is woven with tragic history, ghostly apparitions, and a deep-seated curse that seems to haunt every crumbling stone. 

The Haunted Beginnings of the Cliff House

Overlooking the entire Ocean Beach is The Cliff House, which had originally been built by Samuel Brannan, an ex-Mormon from Maine in 1858 using materials salvaged from a shipwreck. In 1883, the Cliff House was bought by the engineer and developer, Adolph Sutro, who would be the one to develop the whole area of land we see today and where the mystery started. 

The Parallel, a schooner heading into the bay loaded with 40 tons of dynamite and black gunpowder, tragically crashed against the rocky shore. The explosion of the boat was heard across the whole bay and it destroyed the entire north wing of the house. It was not the only ship wrecked there and the ships of The King Philip, SS Ohioan, & SS City of Rio De Janeiro, all met their end on this craggy cliff.

This fueled rumors that the cliffs were cursed by the spirits of those who had met their end there. Some say that they see the ship of the Parallel heading for the rocks before vanishing into thin air right before impact. The victims of the other shipwrecks are also said to wander the rocks on the cliffs below.

In 1896, Adolph Sutro rebuilt the Cliff House from the ground up as a seven-story Victorian chateau, called by some “the Gingerbread Palace”.

The Cliff House would go on to survive a series of devastating events. On Christmas Day in 1894, a fire from the chimney ravaged the structure, only for it to be rebuilt in 1900, only to fall to flames again in 1906 and 1907 — both during times of tragedy and chaos in the city. Could the series of disasters be linked to the haunting curse? Many locals think so.

Today it-s a restaurant with a full view over the sea. Still, many claim that spirits are still trapped around the house.  

The Curse Deepens: The Sutro Baths and its Tragic Legacy

In 1894, Adolph Sutro built the Sutro Baths, a grand swimming complex perched along the edge of the ocean. The eccentric millionaire and former mayor wanted to build the largest indoor swimming area in the world. Though it stood as a marvel of the time with seven pools and could house 10 000 people, it also became a site of haunting tales. 

After Sutro died in 1898, the bathhouse started to struggle. The Great Depression took away its guests, and stricter health codes made it harder to run a public bathhouse. They tried to turn it into an ice skating rink, but this also struggled financially. 

In 1887 when the schooner Parallel hit Cliff House next door, it exploded and demolished part of the house as well as the baths. In 1966 they had decided to turn the building into high rise buildings, but on the first day of construction, a new fire erupted, demolishing the remains of the bath and they abandoned the plans of building. It was found that the cause of the fire was arson.

By the early 20th century, reports of strange occurrences and ghost sightings around the Sutro Baths were common. These ruins — now a quiet monument to decay — are rumored to have seen unspeakable acts within their walls, including ritualistic human sacrifices. Even now, visitors report strange occurrences in the area: sudden cold spots, shadowy figures emerging from the ruins, and a sense of being watched by unseen eyes.

The Ghosts of Ocean Beach

As if the curse of the Cliff House and Sutro Baths weren’t enough, the Ocean Beach area itself is teeming with spectral inhabitants, even when the bathhouse was still in operation. According to them, there was just something that was a little off about the place. 

Over the years, visitors have reported seeing ghostly women wandering along the beach — some dressed in flowing Victorian-style gowns, others carrying parasol umbrellas, as though they are lost from another time.

Among the most famous spirits is Natalie Salina Harrison, a woman whose tragic love story haunts the cliffs. Natalie’s fiancé, a soldier in World War I named Sean Eric Anderson, was lost in battle, and she is said to have waited for his return along the cliffs for decades. In the end, she was petrified to stone and made into a statue, and she is still standing there. It is believed that Natalie’s ghost still haunts the shoreline, waiting for the man she loved, her form sometimes spotted wandering by the ocean with a look of eternal longing in her eyes. There are also those claiming she is luring men down to the rocky shores, and that any men have vanished after trying to follow her.

But it isn’t just women who haunt Ocean Beach. The spirit of Frank Denvin, a 16 year old boy who tragically fell from a ladder head first into an empty cement tank and died in 1896, has also been seen along the cliffs, his shadowy figure still visible near the site of his untimely death. Over the years, workers and visitors have reported hearing the sound of his footsteps echoing across the beach at night, but when they turn to look, he is gone.

There is also the former lifeguard Theodosius who is said to have drowned as he was trying to save someone in the ocean, his shadow appearing in the bath and on the beach. 

What Makes Sutro Bath and Ocean Beach Haunted?

What is it about the place that has fueled the haunted rumors? What could be the cause of it? Some point to the eccentric founder of Sutro Bath to be the cause. Adolph Sutro brought strange things back to the place it is said, either with a sacred or occult story behind them. Some believe that these artifacts have affected the spiritual energy of the place. He had among other things an extensive taxidermy collection, a 3500 year old mummified head and two Egyptian mummies. 

A lot of information about Sutro’s mummy collections disappeared in the 1906 San Fran earthquake, but there are still his collections displayed in the city. 

One of the mummies is called Nes-Per-N-Nub, a mummy whose rare, triple nesting sarcophagi indicates a former great import, as the doorkeeper in the temple of Amun. He dates from between 945 and 783 BCE He was once a high priest of the Temple of Karnak. The mummy  is thought to come from Thebes who died from natural causes. 

The second, unnamed mummy is a female who is often referred to as The Yellow Mummy due to her sarcophagus’ brilliant color, and is remarkable for having extra sets of bones within the folds of her wrappings

The Haunted Cemetery and Satanism

Some say that it’s the very ground Sutro Bath is built on that is haunted. The surrounding land used to be the Golden Gate Cemetery where hundreds of bodies were buried. In the 1930s, 18,000 bodies were supposed to be moved to Colma, but the job was not done properly. In 1993, hundreds of bodies were found in unmarked graves around the area of Ocean Beach. 

There is also a cave system under the Sutro Baths that has drawn attention because of its occult connections. The tunnel that once funneled seawater into the baths is another site where paranormal activity is frequently reported. The dark, narrow passageways echo with strange whispers, and some claim to feel unseen hands brushing against them in the deep silence. For those brave enough to explore, the curse of the Sutro Baths seems to reach out from the shadows, eager to claim another soul.

The caves were dug out when constructing the bath. Some claim that a monster is living there, and some say that they have seen strange claw marks inside of the tunnels.

Many people are said to have been sacrificed at the end of the tunnel. If you go in at night and light a candle, the spirits will come and take it from you, throwing it into the dark water. 

It is also in close proximity from where Anton LaVey founded the Satanic Temple. A lot of nearby buildings and places have been seen in connection to the Satanic Temple as the religion was in large portions formed there. This is also the case with The Westerfeld House in the city.  In 1966 he told the S.F Examiner: 

“Ah, the happy hours I spent looking for ghosts in there. So I went out and put a curse on the place. It burned down 35 hours later, which is pretty unusual. It usually takes 36 hours for a curse to work, you know.”

Local lore suggests that the curse may never be lifted. Every year, as the winds howl off the Pacific, the restless spirits of the beach stir once more, seeking revenge for their untimely deaths and the misfortunes they endured in life. Perhaps the Cliff House is fated to burn again, as the curse of Ocean Beach continues to claim its toll.

The Siren Ghost of San Francisco’s Baker Beach

Said to haunt the sand and waters by Baker Beach in San Francisco, the ghost of a woman has appeared and people claim to have heard her song, almost calling them to her. 

San Francisco is a city of legends, earthquakes, old money, and eccentric spirits. At the foot of the rugged cliffs west of the Presidio and just south of the Golden Gate Bridge, this stretch of sand has long been a favorite for picnickers, locals, and, it’s said, the dead.

Before it was a picturesque escape for sunbathers, Baker Beach belonged to the U.S. military. The adjacent Presidio military base, established in 1776, was one of the oldest active military installations in the country before its decommissioning in the 1990s. Over the centuries, it served as barracks, a garrison, and a site of numerous executions, skirmishes, and military accidents — some of which bled onto the sands of Baker Beach itself.

The Woman in White Beneath the Bridge

The beach is said to be the location of a female apparition who sings on the shore and her sounds are believed to have hypnotic powers. It is not a very widely known ghost story and a suspicious part of the tale is that it is mostly told through vague and short lists of haunted beaches, and not by locals. 

On foggy nights when the Golden Gate disappears into the mist, witnesses have spotted a ghostly woman in white standing alone where the beach meets the rocks. She appears out of nowhere and like a siren, sings people towards her.

As the waters by the beach have a heavy stream and strong undercurrent rip tides, entering the waters is not the best idea. Some fear that her appearance and beckoning voice to the water can pose a danger and her haunting is attributed to more than one mysterious disappearance from the beach. 

Who was she? Some speculate that she is the spirit of a woman who leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge and that her body was never recovered by the coast guard. Some think that she must be one of the victims of the ships that went down right by. Some say that she’s not a human spirit at all, but a creature like the siren, her sole purpose is to lure people to the dark depths of the sea. 

Legends of sirens: Enchanting creatures of the sea, have captivated the imaginations of people for centuries. Often depicted as beautiful maidens with alluring voices, sirens are said to lure sailors to their doom with their enchanting songs, encouraging them to abandon their ships and swim towards the source of the melody. These mythical beings have roots in ancient Greek mythology, where they were depicted as dangerous temptresses residing on rocky islands, using their hypnotic melodies to entice mariners. The consequences of heeding a siren’s call are dire; sailors often found themselves shipwrecked on treacherous shores or lost to the depths of the ocean, entranced by the sirens’ beguiling tunes.

Strange Lights and Whispering Waves

Beyond these specific apparitions, locals and paranormal investigators report an array of inexplicable phenomena on Baker Beach. Flickering orbs of light dart between the dunes, disembodied voices carry on the wind, and sudden, icy pockets of air settle in even on the warmest summer nights.

Some claim to have heard the faint, ghostly strains of military bugles, or the whispered fragments of old sea shanties, though no source is ever found. Lifeguards in the 1970s were said to routinely encounter eerie shadows moving along the surf, far from any living presence

The Lady in Blue of Moss Beach Distillery from the Speakeasy era in California

During prohibition times in America, illegal speakeasies popped up along the shores, perfect for smuggling alcohol into the country. One of them was the Moss Beach Distillery in California, and the restaurant as well as the beach is said to be haunted by The Lady in Blue. 

Perched high on a wind-battered cliff along California’s rugged San Mateo Coast, overlooking the restless Pacific, the Moss Beach Distillery by a secluded beach stands as one of the West Coast’s most charming — and most haunted — landmarks.

Since its inception in 1927, during the heady, illicit days of Prohibition, the Distillery has weathered decades of history, scandal, and ghost stories 20 miles south of San Francisco. But none are as enduring, or as chilling, as the legend of The Lady in Blue.

A Speakeasy by the Sea

The Moss Beach Distillery in San Mateo County was born as Frank’s Place by Frank Torres, an exclusive speakeasy frequented by silent film stars, bootleggers, and thrill-seekers eager to escape the suffocating moral codes of the day and it was never raided. Mystery writer Dashiell Hammett frequented the place and used it as a setting for one of his detective stories. 

Its hidden passageways, secret compartments for smuggled Canadian whiskey, and cliffside location made it the perfect den for mischief, music — and, if whispers are true, murder.

Among the regular guests was a striking young woman known only as Mary Anne or Morley, sometimes known as Cateye by different psychics.Mostly she is just referred to as The Lady in Blue as she was known to always wear a blue dress. Mary was a married woman who, despite the risk, became entangled in a passionate and ultimately tragic affair with John Contina, the establishment’s charismatic piano player, according to some.

A Love Story Drenched in Blood

The lovers’ meetings were clandestine, their affections fueled by the risk and thrill of forbidden romance. But fate — or perhaps jealousy — intervened one fog-laden night. According to the most persistent version of the tale, as Mary and John strolled hand in hand along the desolate beach, they were ambushed by a shadowy figure. Mary was brutally attacked and killed. Though John initially survived, his battered body was later found washed ashore, lifeless and broken.

Other versions suggest different outcomes — a car crash, a lover’s quarrel, or the tragic suicide of another scorned mistress, Anna Philbrick, who allegedly hurled herself from the cliffs upon learning of John’s betrayal. In still other versions, she is a lovesick woman who throws herself into the sea.

Yet no matter which telling you choose, one element remains constant: Mary’s spirit never left Moss Beach.

The Lady in Blue’s Restless Haunting

For nearly a century, patrons and employees alike have claimed unsettling encounters with a female apparition clad in flowing blue. She appears on foggy nights, drifting through the restaurant, brushing cold fingers against the living, or vanishing into thin air before startled eyes.

Visitors have reported whispers with no source, objects moving on their own, and inexplicable technical disturbances like the phone calling from no one. Perhaps the most infamous incident occurred when, without warning, the restaurant’s computer system inexplicably reset — changing every date in the system to 1927, the year the Distillery first opened its doors. Technicians could find no reason for the glitch, and the anomaly has since become a part of The Lady in Blue’s eerie legacy.

Staff members working late have heard the piano play itself, and some refuse to close alone. One employee swears she saw a woman in blue watching from a corner of the empty dining room, only to vanish when approached. Apparently in the 70s, a worker remodeling the restaurant saw her and went back to southern California, too scared to go back and finish the job. Guests have even claimed to see a blue-clad figure staring longingly out toward the cliffs, as though waiting for a lover who never returned.

Also by the water there has been reported about spirit activity. Kids playing on the sandy beach have claimed that some woman in a blue dress came warning them about playing so close to the waters right before a sudden high tide rushed into the shore.

Fact, Folklore, and Foggy Nights

Though no official records confirm the names of Mary, John Contina, or Anna Philbrick, the persistent nature of The Lady in Blue legend suggests a powerful cultural memory — one perhaps born from Moss Beach’s turbulent Prohibition past and its reputation for danger and romance on the edge of the world.

Although today there is a strong figure in the area, there is little evidence of the story before the 1980s. This is when Mike and Shirley Sarno took over the restaurant and gave an interview about the legend of The Lady in Blue in the San Francisco Examiner. 

Their names, Mary or Mary Morley, come from a series of scenes done by Sylvia Browne in April 1992. According to this seance, a fire broke out just a few days after her ghost had warned the staff.  

Whether Mary was a wronged wife, a doomed lover, or simply a figment of California’s colorful lore, her ghost seems determined to linger, forever entwined with the crashing surf and shifting sands of Moss Beach.

If you dare to visit, sip a drink, listen for the whispers, and cast your gaze toward the cliffs at twilight. You might just catch a glimpse of The Lady in Blue, forever walking the shore between the worlds of the living and the dead.

The Haunting of Bodie Ghost Town Frozen in Time

Frozen in time, the Bodie Ghost Town, once a big mining town in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the Gold Rush, now only sand, dust and ghost lives. It is also said to be cursed.

High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Bodie was once a bustling gold-mining town in the 1870s and ’80s Gold Rush, drawing thousands of hopeful prospectors with gold fever. As the gold dried up, the people left the town to die. Now there are only tumbleweeds, dust and ghosts left.

Today, Bodie Ghost Town stands as a State Historic Park and has done so since 1962, preserved in a state of “arrested decay,” where the remnants of its vibrant past remain eerily untouched. Visitors wandering through the abandoned streets of over 150 buildings still standing as they did the day the people left, they can peek into homes with tables set for dinner and shops still stocked with supplies, as if the townsfolk might return at any moment.

History of Bodie Ghost Town

Founded after gold was discovered in the hills surrounding Mono Lake in 1859 by W.S. Bodey, the town rapidly grew, especially during the 1870s and ’80s, reaching a population of around 10,000 at its peak, becoming one of the most successful gold mining places in California. 

Bodey searched the area for 10 years in the area and the mining camp he and his friends founded in 1859 soon grew into a prosperous town. The same year though, he was caught in a blizzard on his way to Monoville. The next spring his friends found him and named the town after him, although the painter did misspell his name on the sign and they never changed it. 

The Gold Rush really kicked off in 1876 when the Standard Company discovered a large deposit of gold ore and people flocked to the place to get a piece of it.

Bodie became infamous for its lawlessness and rough reputation, filled with 65 saloons on the Main Street stretching for a mile down the road, brothels, and gambling halls in the red light districts on the northern end of town. As a true Wild West town it had a Wells Fargo Bank, several fire departments, a railroad and its own Chinatown with several hundreds of Chinese residents, a Taoist temple and plenty of Opium dens. 

Life could be rough in the town with gunfights and murders as well as the harsh working conditions in the mines took many lives. The weather was harsh and the winters could take hundreds of lives in blizzards, exposures and other diseases.

However, as the gold veins were exhausted and mining operations became less profitable, the population dwindled, and by the early 20th century, Bodie was in decline. After the second world war, they never resumed mining and only six people lived there at the time. The last residents left by the 1940s, and Bodie became a ghost town. 

As mentioned, Bodie Ghost Town stands as a State Historic Park, preserved as a ghost town where everything is left, offering a glimpse into the past with its abandoned buildings. The term used to describe the stillness of the town, arrested decay, means the state park only intervenes to prevent the remaining buildings from collapsing and no more restoration will be done. Around 10 % of the original buildings are still standing, and perhaps soon, they too will only become a distant memory.

The Haunting of Bodie Ghost Town

Bodie’s ghostly atmosphere is more than just a preservation effort; it is a place steeped in supernatural lore. Many who visit the Bodie Ghost Town report ghost sightings, particularly of miners and townspeople from the town’s heyday. A woman in a white hood and black and white dress holds a basket in her hand and wanders the town at midnight. Around the mines a tall figure is said to hold a light as he enters the mines and walks them until dawn. 

Phantom music sometimes drifts from the shuttered bars, evoking the rowdy nights when saloons were filled with the sounds of clinking glasses and laughter. There are also particular ghost said to haunt the houses mostly named after the families who lived there.

Ghost of the Last Residents of Bodie Ghost Town

But what happened to the last people living in Bodie? According to the legends, they are now haunting it. One of the men named Ed shot his wife dead, but then three other men came and killed the murderous husband, beating him up and leaving him to drown in a creek. 

It is said the ghost of the murdered man came two months after his death back to haunt his killers, shaking his fist and trying to attack them. The three men soon died themselves, said to be from different strange diseases. One died from a huge cut on his face, the other died from a hemorrhage that made his head blow up like a balloon. The third walked off and died in a ravine.

The three men remaining in town thought it had to be because of the curse put on them by the man they murdered. Sometimes, people claim they still haunt the Bodie Ghost Town.

The Angel of the Bodie Cemetery

Many of the lawless people and prostitutes were not buried in the local cemetery, but in the Boothill Graveyard known as the Bodie Outcast Cemetery. 

This is also where they buried the Chinese residents, often in unmarked graves. The idea was to be buried in the ground until the bones were clean so they could be sent back to their homeland and family. However this has not been the case for many of them, and the unrest people think must be over these graves are thought to be the paranormal reason to many of the strange things happening around the old Chinatown that are no longer standing.

In the Bodie Cemetery though, you can find the grave marked with a child angel. This is the grave of Evelyn, now known as the Angel of Bodie, said to haunt the cemetery. She was a three year old child, the daughter of general shop owner Albert and Fanny Myers. She died when she was hit in the head with a miner’s pick by accident.

Now people claim to have heard giggles of a small girl in the cemetery, and they believe that it must be Evelyn, the Angel of Bodie. Parents that have brought their children also claim that they have started playing with a thing the only child sees. 

The J.S Cain House

One of the haunted buildings in Bodie Ghost Town is the J.S Cain House. This used to be the home of a banker and businessman at the corner of Park and Green Streets. James S. Cain made his fortune from lumber and banking before finding gold. They were perhaps the riches in town and ended up owning most of the property in it.

Now the house built in 1879 is occupied by Park Rangers and their families. Strange things like doors and window opening by themselves happen from time to time. It is said to be haunted by a Chinese woman, appearing to children who visit the bedrooms on the second floor. This has made people think that she might have been a maid used to taking care of the children of the house. 

According to a park ranger staying there, he used to have friends and family with children come to stay with him. One day the children came downstairs and asked who the nice Chinese lady that read them a bedtime story was. 

But it is not only children that have felt her presence. Although the ghost is said to be friendly with children, she seems to hate the adults and people talk about being pushed and having a suffocating feeling when staying there. 

The wife of a ranger once talked about when she went to bed in the room and woke, feeling something sitting on top of her. She almost suffocated and had to fight her way out, falling to the floor. A ranger named Gary Walter also claimed to have had an encounter with her in the same room. He saw the door open and felt a heavy presence again, giving the same suffocating feeling. 

What could the resentment come from though? Some say that there is more to the story, and the maid and nanny working in the house did not have a happy ending. It is said that she was fired when the wife, Martha Delilah Cain threw her out on the street on a cold winter night. The woman wandered off in the snowstorm and was never heard from again. It was also said that her reputation was ruined and the woman killed herself. 

The Gregory House

The modest house in Bodie Ghost Town close to the stamp mill Is said to be haunted by the ghost of an old woman, sitting in a rocking chair as she is knitting an afghan. It is also said that at times, the rocking chair has seen rocking by itself.

It used to belong to Nathan Gregory and his son, Spence who were cattle ranchers. Spence was one of the last residents of the town, and a retired mining engineer. 

It is also said that park rangers have seen something sitting down at the foot of a bed in one of the rooms, invisible, but leaving marks of leg and hands on the quilt. Could it be Spence Gregory himself haunting it?

The Dechambeau House

The Dechambeau Hotel was first a post office in 1879, but then it became a hotel before it turned into a bar and cafe, operating until the early 1930s as Bodies last businesses. It is said to be haunted by a female ghost said to be looking out from the upstairs window. 

The building itself is named after the miner family Dechambeau, originally from Lonqueil, Quebec Province Canada. Could it be one of those still remaining inside?

The Mendocini House

On Union Street there is the haunted Mendocini House, that was the house to an Italian family said to still have ghostly gatherings and dinners. It belonged to a man who drove freight trucks from Aurora and several generations of the family lived in the house. Annie Mendocini herself is said to be haunting the house and the smell of her Italian cooking sometimes comes from the window. Park rangers in Bodie Ghost Town claim to have smelled the scent of garlic as well as seen the steam from boiling water. 

There are also reports about the sounds like there is a large gathering happening inside, as if they are holding a large meal. It is also said to be haunted by children and people claim to have heard their laughter.

The Haunted Mines of Bodie

But what about the mines that drew the people to this deserted place in the first place? Over the years it is said many died working the mines right outside of Bodie Ghost Town. 

It is said a miner who was killed in the Lent Shaft explosion is still haunting the mines. This came after the story from a park ranger who threw rocks down the shaft when the ghostly voice of the miner yelled back, “Hey you!” at him.

There is also a tale of a white mule who started to haunt the mines two weeks after it died when the mine was still in operation. The workers smelled mule droppings and appeared in front of the miners 500 feet below the ground, making many of them refuse to work there.

The Curse of Bodie

One of Bodie’s most chilling legends warns of a curse that befalls those who take anything from the town, even a simple rock and bad luck will follow those breaking the rules. 

Every year there are around 200. 000 people visit the park, and some can’t help themselves and take things from Bodie Ghost Town. Even a whole piano was loaded on the truck before being returned after they heard about the curse. Tales abound of visitors who, after pocketing a memento, experience a string of misfortunes—health issues, accidents, and unexplained bad luck. Desperate to rid themselves of the curse, they often return the stolen items to Bodie, hoping to appease the restless spirits.

The rangers receive letters and packages from the visitors that regret that they stole and believe themselves to be haunted by the curse. Even things like purchased things at the gift shop are sometimes returned. The letters are often anonymous and handwritten, telling the town that they are very sorry and for the spirit to forgive them.

Is the curse said to linger in Bodie Ghost Town real though? As with more than one park, there is a curse put on parks where the rangers get frustrated with visitors taking bits and pieces with them. In an attempt to stop people, it is said the Californian Department of Parks and Recreation started the rumor. Perhaps they didn’t realize how big it would get, but it surely did deter people from stealing, or at least giving it back when they think they are cursed.

Although the curse of Bodie Ghost Town is said to have been made as a cautionary tale from a well meaning ranger, it seems to have brought more work than worth. Now people are said to have started stealing, just to see if the curse works or not before sending the items back. Every time an item is returned, they have to file a police report for it, and most often, they can’t put it back as they have no idea where it came from, now only sitting in storage or on display. This is why they have stopped talking about the curse all together.

The Plastic Christmas Tree Haunting at the Dorrington Hotel

The original owner of the Dorrington Hotel in California is said to be haunting it. One Christmas the ghost of the former mistress of the place went knocking down every fake Christmas Tree the current owner had put up.

In the picturesque and mountainous landscape of Calaveras County, California, the Dorrington Hotel is not just a charming relic of the past, but also a hotbed of paranormal activity. Established in the mid-19th century, this historic hotel of the Gold Rush Time in California, is said to be haunted by its former mistress, Rebecca Dorrington Gardner, whose restless spirit roams the halls, particularly during the Christmas season.

With its storied past and eerie occurrences, like the very name, Calaveras, Spanish for Skulls after the reported remains of natives, the Dorrington Hotel offers a chilling blend of history and hauntings in the sequoia redwoods.

Dorrington Hotel: The place is still in operation even to this day, even years after the Gold Rush died down. It is however said to be haunted by the original owner today.

The Legacy of John Gardner and his Inn

The Dorrington Hotel was built in 1852 by John and Rebecca Gardner, on top of the Big Valley Road as a coach stop were it served as a depot for stockmen as well as a summer resort. John Gardner, a Scottish immigrant, purchased a small sheep ranch and 160 acres of land from Barnabus Smith when it was still just a trail passing by the Miwok and Washoe Native land. Smith, a former Private Captain in the Massachusetts Militia during the War of 1812, had been granted the land for his military service. 

“This is the place!” he wrote to his new bride, Rebecca, who had remained at home in Scotland, waiting for his word. Gardner quickly turned the property known for its cold springs, and he called it first, Cold Spring Ranch, into a profitable roadside business, providing refuge for countless emigrants journeying over the Central Sierra Mountains.

The Lady of the Night: Rebecca Dorrington Gardner

Rebecca Dorrington Gardner, the beloved mistress of the hotel, sailed from Scotland to join her husband in the Sierra Gold Country, and the place was soon called Dorrington, her maiden name. She survived her husband by many years, however, legend has it that she met a tragic end that left her spirit bound to the place she once managed. 

It is said that Rebecca suffered fatal injuries in 1870 when she fell down the rear staircase of the hotel. Some also claim she went out in a snowstorm and lost her way as she froze to death. Others say she was massacred by the natives. Though historical records indicate she passed away on October 16, 1910, in Altaville, California when she was 83 years old, her ghostly presence remains a fixture at the Dorrington Hotel.

Visitors and staff have frequently reported encountering Rebecca’s spirit, peeking out threw curtains in unopccupied rooms, not really liking how the new owners keeps interfering in her buisness. Her spectral activities include doors mysteriously opening and closing, lights flickering, and furniture inexplicably moving. 

The hotel’s dining room is a common spot for sightings, with many claiming to see or feel her presence as she glides through the space. Many guests also claim that they have seen the ghost of her fall down the stairs as a ghostly reenactment of her death. 

Rebecca’s ghost also seems to enjoy interacting with modern technology, often triggering the motion detectors installed around the hotel.

One time it was said she warned the owner at the time og a gas leak in the kitchen. According to the stoy, she woke him up in the middle of the night to warn him. 

The Christmas Tree Incident

The Christmas season brings an increase in Rebecca’s ghostly activities. One particularly spine-chilling tale involves the annual holiday decorations. One year, the hotel’s owner decided to place an artificial Christmas tree in every room. To everyone’s astonishment, each night Rebecca would go from room to room, knocking the trees down. Every morning, the staff and guests would find the trees toppled over, a clear sign of Rebecca’s nocturnal rounds.

In another eerie incident, the owner, Marc Lanthier, experienced something that solidified the hotel’s haunted reputation. One Christmas after this event, Marc took two pictures of the hotel adorned with Christmas lights. When he uploaded the photos to his computer, he discovered something unsettling. One photo was bright and clear, while the other showed a vaporous figure floating over the hotel. Could this be Rebecca Dorrington Gardner, still overseeing her beloved establishment?

Christmas Haunting: Christmas seems to be a season where the haunted occurrences get more frequent. The alleged ghost seems to have a period of adjustments to new owners and new traditions and way of operating the hotel. Could the use of plastic Christmas trees be a trigger this one Christmas?

Other Ghostly Residents at Dorrington Hotel

Rebecca is not the only spirit said to haunt the Dorrington Hotel. Guests have reported hearing the laughter and footsteps of children in the dead of night, despite there being no children present. Could this be some of the four children of the original owners that are haunting the hotel together with their mother?

Many guests visiting the Dorrington Hotel specifically seek out the paranormal, hoping for a glimpse of Rebecca or the other spirits said to reside there. Some overnight visitors have reported finding a single footprint by their beds, believed to be left by Rebecca as she patrols the hotel at night.

A Night In the Gold Rush Country

The Dorrington Hotel remains a captivating blend of history and hauntings, with its rich past and active ghostly presence. And during the Christmas season, the chances of encountering Rebecca Dorrington Gardner increases if we are to believe the stories, not pleased at all about the fake and plastic aspect of the modern Christmas traditions.

The Witching Behind the Production of Practical Magic

The cult classic Practical Magic is a movie about witches, spells and curses. But did you know that a witch actually cursed the film production when they worked on it? And did you know there is going to be a sequel about the family of witches?

The 1998 cult classic Practical Magic is not just a beloved witchy film—it also has an eerily enchanting history behind its production. Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, the film tells the story of two witch sisters navigating love, loss, and a family curse. With an all-star cast, including Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, Practical Magic was filmed at the height of late 90s nostalgia for magical and supernatural tales.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film features the characters enjoying “Midnight Margaritas,” a spontaneous, tequila-fueled bonding session. Behind the scenes, the cast really did get tipsy on the cheap tequila Nicole Kidman had brought on set, leading to authentic moments of tipsy joy that made it into the final cut.

Midnight Margaritas: The booze in the Margarita was real tequila. Were the curses in the movie real as well? If we are to believe the stories, the witch consultant really did leave a curse on the whole movie.

In addition to boozy fun, Practical Magic became an unexpected sisterhood for the actresses. Though the film was directed by Griffin Dunne, a man, the female cast formed a powerful, almost mystical bond. As Kidman recalled, they synced their menstrual cycles during a full moon while filming, teasing Dunne that they might soon “turn on him.”

Musically, the film drew on the talents of self-proclaimed witch and Fleetwood Mac legend, Stevie Nicks. Nicks not only contributed her song “If You Ever Did Believe” to the film but also re-recorded her classic “Crystal,” both featuring Sheryl Crow. 

Yet, what many don’t know is that the film’s making was just as otherworldly as its plot.

Was Practical Magic a Haunted Set?

Behind the camera Practical Magic was plagued by darker forces as well as in front of it is we are to believe the rumors. 

Stories about supernatural occurrences circulated during filming from both cast and crew. Cast members reported eerie noises, especially during the climactic coven scene at the film’s end, raising suspicions that the fictional witchcraft may have stirred something real.

As the director said: “It’s something I will talk about now, but at the time I would sort of deny it. I didn’t want the vibe. As the line from the movie that Aidan has [goes], “I didn’t want to give the curse any strength.” Not that I believed in it. But if you believe in it, you’re giving it strength.”

So was the movie set really haunted, or was it simply the witchy vibe of the set something to the atmosphere. The scariest thing by far was when the witch consultant they had hired cursed the entire movie, as well as the director when they didn’t give into her demands. 

The Exorcism Scene: The scene where the witches gathered for a huge spell was thought to bring with it a strange atmosphere people borderline chucked up to a paranormal one.

The Witch Consultant’s Curse

Originally brought on to help ensure the accuracy of the film’s portrayal of magic, things took a sinister turn with the witch consultant they had hired. They had hired the witch through a friend of the director put them in touch with. The friend has never stopped apologizing for the introduction because of how badly it ended, according to the director.

The witch was, according to the director, paid very handsomely by Warner Brothers for her consulting on spells and such. The director thought it would be fun to bring her out to Los Angeles where they were filming a lot of the movie. They wanted to put her in a nice hotel as he wanted her to meet Bullock and Kidman, who were dying to meet her. 

The Owen Sisters: Nichole Kidman and Sandra Bullock played the sisters in the movie. In the plot, the sisters are cursed as well, and any man who loves them or they love will die.

This all greatly backfired though as the witch got offended. She said to the producer in a phone call: “I’m going to put a curse on you. I’m putting a curse on this movie, and I’m putting a curse on Griffin.” 

She wanted three gross points of the profit the movie would make as well as the right to publish a Practical Magic cookbook. She also left an ominous voicemail as well to Griffith: “There is a land of curses!” and started to speak in tongue on a voicemail before threatening to sue Warner Bros as well.

Griffith brought the recording to the legal department and played the curse for them. Only halfway through they stopped the tape and wrote her a check. 

A New Age Exorcism for a New Age Movie

The threat of the curse rattled the crew, especially when tragedy struck: a crew member’s father died suddenly. Though he was elderly and already ill, many on set believed it was the witch’s doing. In response, Griffin Dunne arranged a New Age exorcism to cleanse the set. 

“It was a very simple, New Agey ceremony that was about as silly as the idea that someone would curse you over the phone,” he told Vulture when he talked about the whole ordeal. “It was mostly chants and smoke and shit like that. “I just did it to cover my bases.”

Though he admitted it was “silly,” the ritual provided some comfort, and filming continued without further incident. The incident did however inspire the creator of the movie to write one of Aidens lines: “Curses only have power when you believe them.” 

Critic Reviews and the Supernatural Vibe

Despite the fun behind-the-scenes stories, Practical Magic wasn’t initially well-received. Critics like Roger Ebert and Entertainment Weekly panned the film, calling it “muddled” and “cursed,” as if the alleged witch’s hex truly took hold of the production and made it to as badly as it did on the box office. In fact, it was the last feature film the director did for ages, and he said it certainly didn’t help his career. 

However, over the years, the film gained a cult following, embraced for its charming mix of romance, sisterhood, and spooky magic. Today the movie is considered a classis by many, a thing put on every fall to get you in the spooky October mood. 

As if continuing the magic of the original, in 2024, news broke that both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman would return for a much-anticipated sequel. The announcement reignited fan excitement and speculation that the witchy energy from the first film might soon stir again. But the question is: how would a sequel fare if there truly is something like a curse put on the production?

Yet, amid the stark beauty of the desert on a seemingly simple roadside motel, a ghostly legend resonates – the spirit of the legendary musician, Gram Parsons. He is said to haunt the motel Joshua Tree Inn, the place he always stayed in for inspiration as well as the place he died. 

Joshua Tree State Park: There are many ghost stories connected to the desert landscape of the Joshua Tree State Park. The most well known is perhaps the ghost of that of Gram Parson who is said to haunt the Joshua Tree Inn.

Country Music Legend Gram Parson

Gram Parsons, left an indelible mark on the industry through collaborations with iconic bands like the Rolling Stones and Emmylou Harris, found solace and creativity in the desert’s embrace. The Joshua Tree Inn became a sanctuary for Parsons and his musical companions, where drug-fueled nights were spent jamming, creating, and forging memories that would echo through time. Tripping on acid, he also claimed to have seen UFOs there. 

He was raised in Georgia and Florida, and was heir to an orange farming empire with plenty of money, but he was drawn to the mostly penniless musical career. His brief career in bands like the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers as well as trailblazing writing some kind of country with a bit of hippie, he wanted to create a type of Cosmic Country genre. Perhaps this was not commercially successful then, but inspired people like Keith Richard with the Rolling Stones and discovering Emmylou Harris is also attributed to him.

The career was filled with alcohol, drugs, fighting and at least one arrest. Some performances he was almost unable to stay on his feet, some shows were like magic where everything was right and the music was flowing. 

Tragically, the music came to an abrupt halt on the fateful morning of September 19, 1973, when Gram Parsons succumbed to a drug overdose aged only 26, right before his rise to fame. 

He had checked into room 8 at the Joshua Tree Inn in the Morongo Valley in San Bernardino. A highway motel on the side of the road that attracted musicians, poets, photographers and the like, already before he made the place infamous. He had lost his home and belongings in a fire and was planning to go on another tour in October.

After six double tequilas at the bar with friends, he bought morphine from a woman staying at the hotel who injected him. They tried to revive him, but to no end.

Joshua Tree Inn: Found at 61259 Twentynine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, the Inn is believed to be haunted, most notably by the musician, Gram Parsons.

In a surreal turn of events, his friends, in adherence to his wishes, “kidnapped” his body before his stepfather could intervene. Friend and road manager, Phil Kaufman remembered a promise they had made to each other drunk: Whichever one of us goes first, we’ll cremate the other’s body in Joshua Tree Park.

Chaos ensued when the stepfather wanted to send his body east, something his friends felt it was the last he would have wanted. They stole his casket and brought it into the desert to Cap Rock. There they put on a big fire of the casket, turning the landscape into a final canvas for the artist’s unconventional farewell in a funeral pyre.

The friends were found, charged with grand theft larceny of the coffin and what remained of Gram were sent back east to his family. 

The Haunted Joshua Tree Inn

Guests, unsuspecting visitors to a musical sanctuary, have reported ethereal encounters – the faint strains of singing in the wind, the lingering aroma of cigarette smoke, and even companionship with the ghostly figure of Gram Parsons himself. 

It is especially the Room 8 that people claim strange things happen, like opening and closing of doors, a mirror on the wall rattling and a nightstand that seems to move.

Outside the room, a small memorial of guitar shaped stones, beer bottles, candles and guitar picks, vinyl records and cowboy boots in honor of the late musician. A note reads: “It’s good to be back in room 8. Five years ago I almost died here. You kept me company in the early morning hours while I recovered and watched the sunrise & listened to the morning doves.”

Another note hinting to the haunted rumors: “Gram, it was a little trippy when you locked me in here,” 

The motel has leaned into the haunted stories and dark tourism, charging well over 100 dollars for a night at the haunted room. According to the man standing behind the desk at the motel, he says it “It’s definitely our most popular room,”  

Musicians in Search for Ghosts

The place has become a cult place, especially for musicians, wanting to make their tribute to his spirit, some park rangers and hikers call them the Grampires. Kacey Musgrave for example told about her encounter with his spirit when staying at the Inn, filming her Follow Your Arrow music video. 

It is also said that his only child, Polly Parsons sometimes takes the trip anc checks into the room to stay and tries to communicate with his spirit.

Other Haunted Rooms

But could it be that Gram is not the only ghost haunting the Inn, and that there are more haunted rooms? According to people working there, some believe there is. There has been a voice of a woman from Room 6 when there was no one there. There have also been said to be some sort of energy and presence in other places of the motel as well. 

In the realm of ghosts, Gram Parsons emerges as a benevolent spirit, offering a hauntingly beautiful connection to the creative energies that flow through the desert landscape. For those who dare to venture into the mystic realm of Joshua Tree National Park, Gram Parsons’ ethereal melodies and timeless presence await in the starlit nights of the Californian desert.

The Wall Street Mill

The Wall Street Mill, once a bustling site where gold ore was processed, was abandoned in the 1940s, yet the spirits of its former workers are said to still linger in the area, forever tied to the labor and lives they lost there.

The mill was built by the miner, Bill Keys, who also appears in the ghost story of Johnny Lang and the haunting said to happen around the Lost Horse Mine. Adjacent to the mill, the ruins of the pink walled Wonderland Ranch stands as another testament to Joshua Tree’s haunted past. The ranch, now a decaying structure, was once home to workers and their families. 

The mill was a success and in a dispute about who got to access it, Keys shot and killed his neighbor, Worth Bagley. Keys then turned himself in and was convicted of manslaughter. He was sent to San Quentin State Penitentiary for 10 years. After he got out, Keys put up a monument to the murder saying: “Here is where Worth Bagley bit the dust at the hand of W. F. Keys, May 11, 1943.”

Visitors who dare to explore the Wall Street Mill are often met with an unsettling atmosphere, but who is the one haunting it? The mill was in operation for many years, and although Worth Bagley is the most notable person who died there, could it be more than one? 

It is a ghostly way up the trail that is said to have no shade and little to no cell service. Shadowy figures are frequently reported, flitting through the remains of the mill or standing ominously in the periphery of vision. Strange lights, which seem to have no earthly source, flicker and dance among the decaying structures, casting an otherworldly glow that defies explanation. Many hikers speak of a profound sense of unease, as if unseen eyes are watching their every move, a chilling reminder that they are not alone.

The Lost Horse Mine

Perched on a peak of the San Bernardino Mountains among the cacti, yucca and wildflowers, this historic gold mine lies between Lost Horse Valley to the west and Pleasant Valley to the east, about 15 miles north of the City of Indio in Riverside County.

The Lost Horse Mine Trail winds through the harsh, arid terrain of the Mojave Desert, leading adventurers to the dilapidated remnants of what was once a bustling gold mine. The Lost Horse Mine was one of the few successful mines in the San Bernardino Mountains from 1894 to 1931 when it shut down for good. This was because of the climate of hot summers, lack of water and wood sources as well as being so far from everything made transportation and operating a mine challenging. 

Lost Horse Mine: One of the haunted places in the Joshua Tree National Park is by the abandoned Lost Horse Mines that ended the partnership in quarrels and eventually poverty and death.

The man who started it was a man named Johnny Lang together with his three partners. The name the Lost Horse comes from a story from 1890 when Johnny Lang met two outlaws that threatened him after stealing his horses. 

Legend of the Lost Gold

However, the journey is not just a step back in time but also a brush with the supernatural. According to local lore, the mine is haunted by the ghost of a miner who met a tragic end in a horrific accident. His restless spirit is said to wander the area, forever searching for his lost gold. Who was this miner? Although not all sources of the ghost story state his name, the story of Johnny Lang and his ending surely is a haunting one. 

After the Lost Horse Mine ceased operations, Johnny Lang returned to the site around 1923. According to stories, Lang had stashed away stolen amalgam at the mill site, which he couldn’t retrieve when he was driven away from the mill. When he returned, he hoped to find it but continued prospecting without much success. 

Occasionally, he sold “pure gold bullion” to local homesteader Bill Keys. Perhaps he really did find some of it? But it can’t have been much, if any at all as the state of him in his final days were dire. Bill Keys’ son, Willis, recalled seeing a malnourished Lang visit their ranch one day, running his fingers across the teeth of a meat saw, searching for any signs of fresh meat. It was also said he walked everywhere because he had eaten his horse. 

In January 1925, Lang left a note on his cabin door, stating he was going for supplies. Bill Keys found his body two months later, with only a small piece of bacon wrapped in wax paper in his possession. Lang was buried where he was found, but stories of his hidden gold persisted and he didn’t get the chance to rest in peace. Some believed a map to his stash was buried with him, leading to his body being dug up twice. On the second time his skull was stolen, but the gold is still said to be lost.

As you hike the trail, the scorching desert heat might suddenly be pierced by an inexplicable cold breeze, sending shivers down your spine. This chilling sensation is often reported by those who dare to tread this path, a stark contrast to the typical desert climate. 

Strange noises, too, plague the area. Some hikers swear they hear the unmistakable sound of pickaxes striking rock, an eerie echo of the Lost Horse Mine’s bustling past, despite the surrounding silence. Could it be the ghost of Johnny Lang looking for his gold?

Unexplained movements and shadowy figures are common sightings among those who brave the trail at dusk or dawn. It’s as if the spectral miner is not content with solitude and seeks to make his presence known to all who venture near his domain.

Its sickly demeanor and haunting presence have sparked fear and fascination among those who dare to venture into the wilderness. But where is the Watts Valley Wolf Ape from? Many speculations exist, and some claim that the Wolf Ape used to co-exist with the Native Americans when they first crossed over to the continent by boat or via the Bering Strait around 30 000 years ago. This was at a time when giant animals still roamed the continent. 

The arrival of humans also marked what has been called a ‘catastrophic decline’ in now-extinct large animals, including camels, horses and mammoths. By the time the Europeans arrived, they found no Ape or large animals, only strange drawings of it. Or if we are to believe some of the witness accounts, some remained.

The Photographer’s Encounter with the Creature

Even esteemed photographer Ansel Adams, renowned for his breathtaking images of Yosemite’s natural beauty, found himself face to face with the Watts Valley Wolf Ape during his visits to the region. According to this story, it seems like there was not only a lonesome animal though, but a whole pack.

According to this story he had to hide in his tent as a pack of them came running. His encounters with packs of these mysterious creatures added fuel to the already blazing fires of speculation surrounding their existence.

Ansel Adams: Born in 1902 in San Francisco, California, Adams developed a deep love for nature from a young age. He was particularly drawn to the rugged landscapes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which would become a central focus of his work. Adams created iconic images such as “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” and “The Tetons and the Snake River,” which have become enduring symbols of the American wilderness. Adams was also an advocate for conservation, using his photography to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.

The Watts Valley Wolf Ape Trashing a School

One of the more unhinged legends about this creature is from that time the Watts Valley Wolf Ape was said to have broken into a school. This was way back in time when the school houses only had one room. It terrorized the students as well as the teacher. The children escaped by climbing onto their desks and into the rafters of the building. The teacher is said to have hidden in a closet.

The Watts Valley Wolf Ape is said to have trashed the school completely, destroying their stuff and eating their lunches before he disappeared into the wild once more. 

The Preacher and Satan’s Pet

Another strange story concerning the Wolf Ape comes from the 1950s. It is said that a preacher shot one that measured at least ten feet long. The preacher then hung it on the walls of his church and claimed that the creature was Satan’s pet. It was hanging there for many weeks until the stench of it became so unbearable he had to rid himself of it. 

He sold it to a traveling freak show and used the money he made to start his own church in San Francisco. His luck ran out fast though and was killed soon after he moved. People started to talk about that there might be a curse of the Wolf Ape as his body was so mutilated after he was killed that it took many months to identify his body.

Modern Sightings of the Watts Valley Wolf Ape

Even today, people keep reporting about seeing strange things lurking around Fresno County. It is usually in the area of Watts Valley and the cemetery there as well as even closer to the urban area. 

On a local Fresno radio station, a chilling tale emerged from two witnesses hunting near Watts Valley Cemetery. They encountered a Wolf Ape emerging from the bushes: a six-foot-long, gray-haired creature with a baboon-like face and uncanny human eyes. 

Its moans and strange cough sent them fleeing, chased relentlessly over hills and pastures. Seeking refuge in the cemetery, they hid behind tombstones as the creature closed in. In a stroke of luck, the uncle tossed cinnamon-flavored gum, distracting the beast long enough for a caretaker to offer them safety. From the sanctuary of the caretaker’s truck, they watched as the creature eventually faded into the night.

Skepticism about its Existence

Despite the allure of these tales, skeptics remain skeptical, dismissing the sightings as nothing more than folklore and superstition. As dusk settles over the foothills of Fresno County and the eerie silence of the wilderness descends, one can’t help but wonder: what secrets lie hidden within the depths of Yosemite’s forests?
