Leading up to Christmas, the Lefferts-Laidlaw House at 136 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn got uninvited visitors, knocking on the doors. The haunting lead to a spectacle of onlookers trying to solve the strange case that even the New York Police couldn’t solve.

In the bustling borough of Brooklyn, New York, among the charming brownstones of Clinton Avenue, one address stands out for its eerie reputation: 136 Clinton Avenue, a grand Greek Revival House built around the end of the 1830s, still standing close to the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Clinton Hill. Today it is known as the Lefferts-Laidlaw House and when it was put on the market in 2020, it was listed for 3.4 million dollars after being on and off the market for years. 

The residents that have lived there in modern times as well as the agent trying to sell the house all say that it isn’t haunted. But could the haunted ghost story be the reason buyers are deterred from it? The chilling events that took place here in the winter of 1878 have left an indelible mark on local lore, giving rise to one of Brooklyn’s most infamous Christmas hauntings.

The whole story was told in a series of news articles in the New York Times on the 20th and 21st of December. 

The Uninvited Guest at 136 Clinton Avenue

It all began a few weeks before Christmas in 1878. Edward F. Smith, a resident of 136 Clinton Avenue, was enjoying a quiet evening at home when the doorbell rang. He answered the door, expecting a visitor, but found no one there. It happened several times more that night, the doors of the house kicked, banged and rattled. It was so loud, but not a single thing was seen and carried on until 10 in the evening. Mr. Smith had to tell himself that: It was only the wind, and went to sleep.

That was only the beginning of a pre-Christmas nightmare. This seemingly innocent event soon turned into a nightly occurrence, each time with the same perplexing result: the doorbell would ring, but there would be no one outside, and no signs that anyone had been there at all.

Smith and his family were initially baffled and soon grew frustrated. Determined to catch the prankster, Smith sprinkled ash and flour along the path to the door, expecting to find footprints. But the substances remained undisturbed, and the mysterious noises continued unabated.

Escalation of Fear

As the days passed, the unsettling events escalated. The doorbell ringing turned into aggressive banging on the doors. The Smith family, now deeply concerned, decided to seek help. They contacted the police, who began to investigate the strange occurrences as they spent the night, but nothing came of it.

Despite the police presence, the disturbances did not cease. The ringing and banging persisted, defying all attempts to identify their source. The Police Captain McLaughlin was even there, opening the door as it banged only to find empty air. This was on Monday the 16th of December when things took a darker turn.

The situation took an even more sinister turn one night when a brick suddenly flew through a window from outside. Officers standing nearby saw no one who could have thrown the brick, adding to the growing sense of fear and confusion.

The Paranormal Conclusion

Weeks of investigation yielded no answers. The police were unable to determine the cause of the disturbances, and the relentless noises and inexplicable events continued to plague the Smith family. With no rational explanation in sight, Smith and the witnesses to these bizarre happenings began to suspect a supernatural cause.

The haunting of 136 Clinton Avenue became a topic of local gossip, with many speculating that the house was cursed or that it harbored restless spirits. Some suggested that the disturbances were the work of a mischievous poltergeist, while others believed it was the ghost of a former resident seeking vengeance or closure.

Paranormal seekers and spiritualists begged to come inside to have a look, but Mr. Smith refused them all as he would have none of that nonsense. This didn’t stop them though and it was reported of semi-seances on the sidewalk with a crowd the police had to send away at times. One police officer was even bitten on the fingers by what the paper described as: ‘one powerful German who refused to move.’

Who was the Ghost Haunting the Lefferts-Laidlaw House?

After three weeks of mayhem, the haunting suddenly stopped according to the residence, and no answer was given to what really happened there. The local gossip claimed that it had to be the work of the ghost of a lawyer said to have committed suicide inside of the house years before. 

According to Mr. Smith, he was so rattled and annoyed he was said to have said it had to be Satan himself in his home. He claimed it was he who had driven the ghost away with long prayers and had previously said to the newspaper that: ‘we consider ourselves perfectly able to take care of any ghost that comes along.’

There are also stories about the original owner and his chef, where according to this story, the owner murdered the chef when he found out about the affair with his wife. 

According to the police, they remained inconclusive. It wasn’t like they could accept the theory about the devil or the ghost of a lawyer, but even they had to stand behind what they saw the things that happened, and that there was no way a living human could have done it without having been seen.

Over the years, the house has changed hands multiple times, and each new owner has been regaled with tales of the Christmas haunting. In the old house of a famed Bengali poet and philosopher, the ghosts of Tagore House or Jorasanko Thakur Bari are said to linger. Throughout the years, the family of Rabindranath Tagore have told about the haunting said to have happened inside of the mansion. 

North in Kolkata lies Tagore House, an anglicized way of saying Jorasanko Thakur Bari, a grand mansion that once served as the residence of the illustrious Tagore family built in 1785. The stately home of high ceilings, black and white marble floor and arched doorways is today a nod to just how powerful the ancestral home of the Tagore family was. They were one of the leading families in Kolkata and key players in the Bengali Renaissance.

This sprawling palace stands as a testament to the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet and polymath who called it home. In 1913 he became the first non European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Now his ancestral home operates as a house museum and has, according to his family, always been haunted.

Rabindranath Tagore (রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর) was born in Jorasanko Thakur Bari in 1861 and his poetry and writing have been called both spiritual and magical. 

Among the most chilling accounts are those of phantom footsteps echoing through empty corridors and the haunting sound of anklets tinkling in deserted rooms and other strange occurrences inside of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari building. 

These spine-tingling tales have been meticulously documented and shared from the Tagore family over the years, finding their way into writings like ‘Thakurbarir Bhooter Golpo’ (Ghost Stories from Thakurbari), a collection that chronicles the chilling legends of Tagore House. 

Hauntings of Jorasanko Thakur Bari

One of the stories you will find written down is from when Rama, who was Tagore’s granddaughter died. The family was distraught by her death and didn’t want to send the body away. Instead they put her downstairs that evening and waited and grieved. 

Rabindranath Tagore: (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941), also known by the sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali poet, Brahmo Samaj (syncretic Hindu monotheist) philosopher, visual artist, playwright, composer, and novelist whose avant-garde works reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Amita Thakur was one of the women in the family who sat in the room next door that evening and told about what happened next. Suddenly the lanterns in the room went off one by one in the row they hung in. Everyone in the room freaked out, not daring to light the lights again.  And when a cold breeze started coming from nowhere, they knew that there was a spirit with them. 

The Ghost Walking in Tagore House

Another story told from the Tagore House was when Tagore’s nephew, Nitish died. In the period right after his death the family claimed that Nitish was seen almost every evening as he was walking down his favorite corridor. Which also says something about just how big this house was. 

There would also be stories about the relatives living in Jorasanko Thakur Bari waking up and seeing a ghostly figure standing and watching them.

The Dead Wife in the Picture

From the book detailing the haunting of the mansion they also discuss one of the mysterious pictures taken of the family that sparked a debate that yet again a ghost in the family lingered in the Tagore House. 

Mrinalini Devi, the wife of Rabindranarth Tagore, was also a translator and described as a woman with a great personality as they described her. She died in 1902 after a serious illness the doctors never managed to diagnose. She was only 28 and according to legend, her ghosts have shown up from time to time. 

In 1904, the family gathered for a family picture, and as a shadow behind her husband, it is said she sat in the picture, two years after her death. Was this the final haunting from her side? Some say that she is still haunting the place.

As dusk descends and the shadows lengthen, Tagore House takes on a hauntingly beautiful aspect, its majestic facade concealing secrets that defy rational explanation. 

Whether fueled by imagination or rooted in reality, the haunted rumors surrounding this historic palace continue to captivate the imaginations of those who dare to delve into its shadowy depths. A story just as good as the fictional stories that were written in the Tagore House.

In 1991, a family in the Vallecas district of Madrid claimed that their apartment was haunted by a malevolent spirit. Over the course of several weeks, they experienced a series of chilling incidents, including unexplained noises, objects moving on their own, and even physical attacks that ended in the death of one of their daughters.

Background of the Haunted Vallecas House

The Haunted Vallecas case took place in a modest apartment building located in the Vallecas district of Madrid, Spain. The specific place the hauntings happened was in an apartment on Calle Luis Marin No. 8.

The people living there had a teenage daughter called Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro that lived in the apartment together with her siblings and parents. She was 18 years old and had started to get into spiritualism in the time leading up to the hauntings, and she was especially into ouija boards.

Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro used to organize some of her own sessions as well. Once she was playing the game with her friends at school when a teacher found them. They had been trying to contact the boyfriend of one of her friends that had died in a motorcycle accident. The teacher tore the Ouija board apart and the girls claimed to see smoke coming from the glass they had played with, and the friends claimed that Estefania inhaled it. 

The Start of Strange Happenings After the Ouija Board Session

The haunting of the Vallecas apartment began after this incident. Estefania started to suffer from insomnia and she had hallucinations and epileptic seizures no one could explain. Her parents tried to bring her to different hospitals, but nothing seems to work. 

The Haunted Vallecas Case: The tragic death of the teenager Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro from Madrid turned into a paranormal mystery.

Believers of the supernatural came to believe that the young girl was possessed after messing with the occult, something of a satanic panic that were common in the 80s and 90s. One of the theories was that the grandfather of the family wanted to take revenge on his daughter as they didn’t end things on good terms. 

She claimed she saw shadows of strange human forms in the night. They had no face and asked her to come with them. To where they were taking her she was unsure of.

The strange things continued to escalate to July 13th in 1991 when she attacked her sister Magdalena. The next day, Estefania had a seizure and was taken to the Gregorio Maraño Hospital in Madrid when she was already in a coma. She died the very same night, although the autopsy remained inconclusive and claimed it was a sudden and suspicious death. 

The Haunting of the Family of Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro

But the strange things in the apartment didn’t stop after Estefanias death. On the contrary, it escalated until it drove the family from their home. 

Soon after, the family claimed to hear strange noises coming from inside the walls of their apartment. They heard knocking, scratching, and even whispers. According to Juan Pedro, the sounds were so loud that they could be heard throughout the building. The family also claimed to see strange shadows moving around their home, and objects began to move on their own.

The mother climbed to hear the screaming voice of Estefania that called for her, as well as what sounded like an old man laughing. 

Glass would break, doors would open and close and objects would move, all without anyone touching it. The daughters would wake up with their wrists slammed against the wall. In 1992 Gutierrez called the police and a team led by inspector Jose Negri arrived on November 27th. The parents and children had run out of the building, even though it was pouring rain, they were terrified. They claimed that a huge shadow was watching them from the hallway and their crucifixes in the house moved. 

The Investigation of the Vallecas Case Begins

The police went into the apartment and started the investigation. It is this report that has caught the attention of occultists ever since. The police claimed that the wardrobe door opened by itself, even though it was locked, and almost hit the face of one of the agents. 

Loud noises came from the balcony, even though there was no one there. Strangest was the brown slime that hung on a bedside table no one knew where it came from. 

A crucifix that hung on the wall kept falling down to the ground. The police officers left the scene soon after, knowing that they couldn’t do anything about it. 

Two years after Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro death, on the 1st of November in 1993, a picture of her that hung on the wall in the living room caught fire. Only her face. The frame or other objects weren’t burned. The family soon sold the apartment and moved away. The people that took over are said to never have experienced something similar. 

Haunting After her Death: After Estefanía’s death, paranormal phenomena intensified in the Vallecas apartment. Concepción claimed to have seen upside-down crucifixes , glass shattering for no apparent reason, and heard her deceased daughter’s voice. Doors opening and closing on their own were common occurrences.

What Really Happened in the Vallecas Apartment?

Although the Vallecas case is one of the more famous cases to explore paranormal phenomena in Spain, there have also been put forward other theories to explain it all. As one of the taxi drivers in the neighborhood said once: They often talked about the case and agreed that there was something wrong with the family.

The first thing is the psychological factors that were at play within the family. Her mother was examined and she was found emotionally unstable and anxious with a need for attention. Could she have something to do with the hauntings that happened? Could she have exaggerated their experiences, or at worst, even constructed some of them?

An interesting thing is that when they interviewed Ricardo and Maximiliano Gutierres, two of Estefanas brothers, they rejected the idea that she was possessed by the devil. They spoke out about what happened and their sister together with the police inspector in 2018. They said that she had epilepsy, as well as their mother and that there was nothing supernatural about her.

Although she wasn’t diagnosed, she was taking medication for it. There were things the brothers were unable to explain, but even the thing about the burned picture they didn’t rule out the possibility that some of their family could be behind. 

Her sister Manuela claims that what they told back then was the real deal and that something more than just an illness had taken hold of their sister and apartment. 

The strange thing is the police investigation who knew nothing of the house before they entered and relayed a lot of what the family had experienced over the years in their official police report.

The events detailed in the movie are based on the case, but of course have taken different liberties to tell a different kind of story.

The Killakee Dower House in Dublin at the foot of the hill that would be known for its dark masses and hauntings, was for a long time affected by it. After the notorious Hellfire Club started to hold their meetings there, dark and mysterious things started to happen. 

The origins of Killakee House date back to the late 18th century when it was built as a hunting lodge by the prominent Connolly family. The Connolly’s, known for their connection to Castletown House in County Kildare, created this charming lodge on the estate that would later bear the name Killakee. The grand house was demolished in 1941, but the Dower House is still standing.

The house itself is a two-story building, perched along the Military Road, offering a view of the surrounding countryside. Over the years, it has played multiple roles, from serving as a dower house to providing a residence for the estate’s manager.

The Sinister Beginnings: The Hellfire Club

The grounds around Killakee House are shrouded in dark history, notably due to the presence of the infamous Hellfire Club. In the mid-1700s, Richard Parsons established this sinister branch of the Hellfire Club, an English-based secret society known for its debauched and often disturbing gatherings.

First, the club rented another hunting lodge on top of the hill, but they would soon find their way into the Dower House as well.

Here, among the ruins of the Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill, members partook in activities that included devil worship, ritualistic animal sacrifice, and even witch burnings. One gruesome account tells of the ritualistic killing of a black cat, which was doused in whisky and set ablaze. This eerie connection to the supernatural would later come back to haunt Killakee Dower House.

After the hunting lodge they originally held their meeting in was damaged in a fire they started to hold the meetings at Killakee Dower House. After they left this place, the Dower House was left with a tainted reputation and believed to be haunted. 

The Arrival of Margaret and Nicholas O’Brien

In 1968, Margaret and Nicholas O’Brien breathed new life into the dilapidated Dower House, with dreams of transforming it into an arts center. Little did they know that their restoration efforts would awaken something otherworldly.

The Dowers House: The House has been called Killakee House Rathfarnham or the Stewards House among other thing and was the place were the Hellfire Club went to when their original meeting place was damaged in a fire.

The workmen began reporting strange occurrences as they were working at Killakee Dower House. Eerie sounds filled the air, and odd happenings became commonplace. But the most unsettling phenomenon was the appearance of a large black cat with piercing red eyes. 

The Haunting of the Black Cat

The most notorious apparition associated with Killakee Dower House is undoubtedly the spectral black cat. Witnessed by several individuals, including artist Tom McAssey, this mysterious feline was no ordinary house pet. Described as being as large as a Dalmatian, it emitted an ominous presence.

One night, Tom McAssey confronted the phantom presence outside the front door, believing it to be a prank by one of the workers. However, he soon realized that the figure was not human, and a menacing snarl was followed by the sight of a growling black cat with eerie red eyes. A shadowy figure growled “You cannot see me. You don’t even know who I am”. This terrifying encounter sent McAssey and the other workers fleeing in sheer terror.

The Seance at the Dower House

Beyond the spectral cat, Killakee Dower House harbored deeper mysteries. In October 1969, a group of actors decided to hold a séance within the house, unwittingly reawakening it’s supernatural energies. The disturbances resumed with renewed intensity.

In the following year, an astonishing discovery was made beneath the kitchen floor: the skeleton of a deformed dwarf, or perhaps a child, accompanied by a brass figurine of a demon. Who this person was, no one knows, but rumor was that it was one of the human sacrifices from the time the house was used by the Hellfire Club. The presence of this eerie artifact, along with the skeletal remains, further fueled the belief that malevolent forces had left their mark on Killakee House.

The Power of Exorcism at Killakee Dower House

In an effort to quell the unsettling occurrences, Margaret O’Brien enlisted the help of a priest to perform an exorcism on Killakee Dower House. Although this initial ritual provided some respite, the disturbances returned when a séance was conducted.

Ultimately, it wasn’t until the dwarf’s skeleton and the demonic figurine were properly buried that the hauntings ceased. This marked the end of a chapter of terror in the history of Killakee House.

The Killakee Dower House was used as a restaurant in the 1990s, but closed down in 2001. Today it is merely a private residence, and perhaps also, it is rid of its dark past and lingering ghosts.

The Alchemist House in El Call, Barcelona

An old house in El Call, Barcelona in Spain is said to be the former house of an alchemist. It is said that he cursed the Alchemist House after he was involved in the tragic death of his own daughter. 

In the middle of the Jewish quarter in Barcelona called El Call there is a coffee shop called Satan’s Coffee Corner at the end of the street. This is a seemingly fitting name for what happened in this street many moons ago according to this legend.

Today the building is a part of the Barcelona History Museum designed to show the life of the Jewish community that settled down in Barcelona in the 9th century.

The Jewish Alchemist and his Daughter

Back in the 14th century there was a famous Jewish alchemist living at number 8 of Arc de Sant Ramon del Call. There are still ornaments of a window and a stone arch from this time. 

He had a beautiful daughter who fell in love with a Christian man. The daughter wanted the man to ask for her fathers permission to marry and finally be together, but the man refused as he knew that the father would oppose them being together no matter what and would never give them his approval. 

Or perhaps the man only wanted a fling without the hassle of marriage. In any case, because the daughter saw no future and them being together, she ended the relationship when the man kept refusing to go to her father. This enraged the man though and he decided to get his revenge on her. 

The Revenge of the Alchemist’s Daughter

He went to her father, albeit for a completely different purpose than what she wanted him to. The boy came to him and asked for poison to kill his ex lover. The alchemist was used by people using his skills to give people what they wanted, whether it was a potion for love, for wealth or even death he was happy, or at least willing to make deadly poisons for those that needed and could pay. 

It is said that the alchemist asked the boy if he was giving the poison to a girl or a boy, and the boy said it was a girl. Because of this, the alchemist put the poison in a rose where just a sniff of the flower could kill a person. 

The boy paid for the deadly flower and went his merry way. The alchemist closed up for the day and went upstairs to greet his daughter, not knowing what tragedy he had just created.

The Flower for his Daughter

That night, the Christian man went to the window of the daughter and called out to her. He offered her the rose, pleading for her and saying that he wanted her back, that he loved her and would do anything for her. 

Although she had broken it off with him, she still longed for him and he was saying everything she wanted to hear. That is why she accepted the rose. After smelling the rose just once, she fell to the floor, writhing in pain until she died of her fathers poison. 

The father went to her room in the morning and found her dead by the flower he himself had made and sold. 

The father fled the house and Barcelona. Before he vanished forever, he put a curse on the house he had once called the home to him and his daughter. He was condemning the whole building and for it to bring misfortune to whoever entered it as it had been done to him. According to the legend, some claim to hear the weeping from the girl within the walls of number 8, the former alchemist’s house. 

The Truth of the Alchemist House

Did an alchemist live in this house? Did his daughter actually die by the hand of her Christian boyfriend and his own magic? Perhaps it really happened, perhaps not, the story is nonetheless a good allegory of what happened to jews in Barcelona in this time.

The Jews grew in numbers in the city over the years and flourished. Although a strained relationship between the jews and christians throughout the history, their coexistence in Barcelona up until the 14th century wasn’t considered bad. 

That all changed after the black plague came to the Catalan capital in 1348. There were many to blame for this plague, witches, the devil, some even blamed the jews. There was a belief by many that the jews possessed some sort of evil magic and they were dangerous. The king tried to defend the community and even the pope came to the defense at the time to calm down the rumors. But it was too late, because the seed to the hatred was already planted. 

It all culminated in a tragic massacre in 1391. Over 200 jews were murdered in Castellnou. Some were even burned in the streets and the jews had to flee the city, leaving most of their life behind. Their whole community collapsed and most of the buildings, the streets and the homes they had built fell into the hands of the Christians.

The 1391 Massacre: In Barcelona in 1391 there was a riot in the city were they targeted jews on the street and slaughtered them.

The Jewish houses were rebuilt and their mark on the city started to fade away as the shops, homes and people that used to live there now were gone. Only a few houses like the Alchemist House with its accompanying legends remained.

According to legend the son of the family was confined to the house because of being homosexual and they tried to cut him off from the world from a young age. Some say that the confinement was by himself as he didnt’ want to live like this and punished himself by locking himself up. 

Another version of the legend is that the family physically tied him up and shut him inside so as not let his sin be known and come to life. How he died is up for debate. Was it by natural causes or by someone’s hand? In any case, it is said that the ghost haunting this house is him.

A mysterious haunted house known as the Rodrigues Home in Verna, Goa is supposedly left from colonial times. Although looking like any other house, it is said to have ghost lingering. 

In the Salcete village of Verna, about 10 kilometers north of Margao, stands the Rodrigues Home according to local lore. This old mansion from colonial times during Portuguese rule, though outwardly a charming and beautiful retreat often called normal looking, harbors a dark and chilling secret.

Locals whisper of the spirits of the Rodrigues family who are said to haunt the premises, making it one of the most infamous haunted locations in Goa, although its exact whereabouts and details of its story are scarce.

For generations, locals have recounted stories of strange and inexplicable occurrences within the house, attributing them to the restless spirits of the Rodrigues family who still own the mansion according to most sources.

Haunted Rumors from Verna

So what is it about this manor house that looks seemingly fine when seen by the naked eye? Visitors and passersby have reported a series of unsettling phenomena that seem to defy rational explanation. 

One of the strange things often reported is the flickering lights, as if unseen hands are playing with the electrical switches. There is also reported about sudden and unexplained opening and closing of doors and windows.

Perhaps the most disconcerting of all are the accounts of cutlery moving on its own, clattering unnervingly in the empty dining room. The linens in the house have also mysteriously disappeared and then reappeared without anyone having had access to the premise.

The Ghost of the Rodrigues Home

But who is haunting this alleged haunted house? A member from the Rodrigues family is an obvious culprit, but seeing how common the last name is and the missing specific details of the ghost story, it is difficult to pinpoint who and what Rodrigues family we are even referring to. 

Local legends speak of the tragic history of a Rodrigues family though, whose untimely deaths are believed to be the source of the haunting. It is said that the family met with a series of misfortunes, each more devastating than the last. The exact nature of these misfortunes varies with each telling, but the common thread is a sense of unresolved sorrow and lingering attachment to the family home.

The Missing House

From whom and when did these haunted rumors start though? The first mentions of it online seems to be articles from 2012, claiming the unspecified house is haunted, and still used as a family home. Various of other sources later claim the house has become abandoned. Who really knows at this point. As with many of the other haunted houses in Goa, India, the details of their whereabouts are vague with a lot of hearsay.

But for now, who really knows what the truth is, and what really lurks inside the home of this mysterious manor house.

Deep in the Indian mountains, Charleville Mansion in Shimla is said to be so haunted with an evil poltergeist activity that even the owners had to leave it and it has since then changed hands many times.

This historic mansion or dâk-bungalow, has long been the subject of chilling tales and inexplicable phenomena that continue to send shivers down the spines of those who dare to step into its shadowy past.

A Victorian Era Abode

Constructed during the colonial era in the late 1800s, Charleville Mansion stands as an architectural relic of its time. The grand facades, intricate woodwork, and sprawling gardens exemplify the opulence that defined the Victorian period. However, behind the mansion’s splendid exterior lies a history marred by a series of mysterious events that have perpetuated its eerie reputation.

Even Rudyard Kipling, the author of the Jungle Book, mentioned how he saw a ghost in his writings “My Own True Ghost Story”, a story about a charecter hearing a ghost playing pool in the room next to him when he is staying at a dâk-bungalow in India.

The Poltergeist’s Haunting

The legend of Charleville Mansion traces back to the early 20th century when Victor Bayley, newly appointed as the Assistant Secretary of the Railway Board, arrived in Shimla with his wife in October in 1913. 

Charmed by the prospect of affordable rent, the couple chose to make this stately mansion their residence. Unbeknownst to them, the mansion harbored a chilling secret. The previous owner, an army officer, had abandoned the mansion due to a malevolent poltergeist that roamed its halls.

The Sinister Upper Room

It is said that it is the ghost of a British gentleman that is haunting the house. The haunting is that of a poltergeist with breaking and crushing objects inside the house, although no one is said to have been physically hurt by it. 

The heart of the mansion’s malevolence seemed to reside in one of the upper rooms, leading the owner that stayed there before the Bayleys to lock it away. The army officer that lived there before them didn’t really believe in ghosts, but wanted to test it out because of the haunted rumors.  

However, to his dismay, the room lay in ruins the following morning and everything was turned upside down. Frightened and unable to rationalize these bizarre events, the owner swiftly vacated the mansion, leaving it to bear the sinister legacy of the supernatural. 

When Victor Bayley and his wife moved in, they did not encounter any strange occurrences and stayed there for over a year. The unsuspecting couple lived a peaceful life in the mansion, but it was their domestic help who was in for an eerie surprise.

An Unnerving Encounter at Charleville Mansion

One evening, while the couple was attending a dinner party, their domestic help remained in the mansion. As he waited, an eerie feeling washed over him, and he was compelled to investigate a room upstairs. His blood ran cold when, to his astonishment, he witnessed a spectral figure and asked if he wanted something. The figure, looking British, didn’t answer and only passed through a closed door. 

Soon after this incident the Bayleys vacated the home.

Following Victor Bayley’s departure, the mansion changed hands and underwent a significant renovation and most of the people staying in the mansion had a story or two to tell and Charleville Mansion continues to be regarded as one of India’s most haunted places, its haunting past woven into its very walls, forever shrouded in an eerie mystery.

The last British living there was an old lady called Mrs A. She sold it after India’s independence to an Indian, telling him it was a haunted place. Today it is owned by an Indian gentleman who has renovated the whole mansion. Still, the locals claim to see the ghost of the British gentleman haunting the mansion in the hills.

Renvyle House and a visit from Yeats

Renvyle House was said to be haunted long before the poet Yeats stepped into the hotel and decided to hold a seance. What they experienced staying there though almost sounded as fantastical as one of his stories and today it bears the fascinating history of modern spiritualism and occult seances.

Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Galway in Ireland, Renvyle House stands as a charming rural hotel today, exuding warmth and hospitality. But it hasn’t always been like this, and there is a dark story of the occult ricocheting in the many rooms.

Within its inviting walls, guests, including renowned Irish poet and spiritualist William Butler Yeats, have encountered spine-tingling encounters with the supernatural, and who knows, perhaps even summoned some?

Renvyle House, a low, sprawling gray structure on Ireland’s western coast, boasts a storied history marked by construction, destruction, and rebirth. It has withstood the tumultuous shifts in Ireland’s fate, serving as a testament to the nation’s enduring spirit.

A Hotel with an Eventful Past

Originally, this site was inhabited by the formidable Gaelic clan of Donal O’Flaherty since the 12th century. In 1689, the Blakes, one of the 14 Tribes of Galway, acquired 2,000 acres of O’Flaherty land and eventually took up residence in 1822. They transformed the modest thatched cabin into a grander dwelling. 

Major renovations, including the addition of a shipwreck-sourced timber extension and a slate roof, took place under Henry Blake’s ownership. In 1883, his widow, Caroline Johanna, converted it into the area’s first hotel, opening its doors to guests seeking Connemara’s natural beauty.

In 1923, during the Irish Civil War, the IRA set the house ablaze, erasing the structure along with Gogarty’s priceless library. Surgeon, poet, and statesman Oliver St. John Gogarty, who had acquired the property in 1917, embarked on its reconstruction in the late 1920s. 

The new design reflected the aesthetic of that era, restoring Renvyle House as a hotel. It was during his stewardship that the first eerie tales of spectral encounters began to surface as his guests often included those with a keen interest in the paranormal.

A Haunting Presence at Renvyle House

Oliver St. John Gogarty: Owner of Renvyle House and a writer. He served as the inspiration for Buck Mulligan in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses and often entertained his literary friends at his house.

Even before Yeats came for a visit, the Renvyle House was said to have had a haunted reputation about it. Servants working at the Renvyle House often spoke in hushed whispers of unsettling “presences” that seemed to lurk within the shadows of the home. Bedsheets would inexplicably take flight from their resting places, doors would open and close with no human hand to guide them, and the atmosphere was charged with an otherworldly energy.

One night, the owner himself, the writer Oliver St. John Gogarty experienced something he claimed had to have been something paranormal. In the middle of the night he was jolted from slumber by a haunting disturbance. As the midnight hour approached, he was roused by the sound of heavy footsteps in the hallway outside his room coming closer and closer.

Gogarty lit a candle and ventured out to confront the source of the disturbance. Perhaps it was a guest, maybe a servant walking in the night? Yet, as he stepped into the corridor, a chilling gust extinguished the flame he was carrying. In that moment, he described an inexplicable heaviness in his limbs, as though “exercising with rubber ropes.” The spectral presence had vanished, leaving him in solitude in the pitch dark.

The Arrival of William Butler Yeats

The supernatural activity at Renvyle House reached its zenith when Gogarty’s close friend, the renowned poet William Butler Yeats, and his wife, Georgia, came to stay. Yeats grew up in Sligo, a part of Ireland known for its hauntings and fantastical fairy tales that blended into the locals’ everyday life. 

Yeats believed that when you spoke of a dead man you conjured his ghost, and together with his wife that acted as a medium for them, they had a habit of chasing ghosts and exploring the afterlife. 

Together, they embarked on a journey into the realm of the paranormal. The couple was highly interested in the occult, as it was both new and fashionable in that area, and they took part in many seances. 

One evening, while gathered in the library, the Yeatses and their companions were startled by the creaking of the library door, which slowly swung open of its own volition. Fear swept through the room, yet Yeats, resolute and unyielding, raised his hand and boldly declared, “Leave it alone, it will go away, as it came.” Remarkably, the door obeyed, slamming shut with an unsettling finality.

The Yeats Couple: At the age of 25, Georgie Hyde-Lees received a marriage proposal from the 52-year-old poet W.B. Yeats. This proposal came shortly after Yeats had been rejected by Iseult Gonne, whom he had loved for a long time. Surprisingly, Georgie accepted Yeats’ proposal, and the two were married just three weeks later. During their honeymoon, Georgie began automatic writing, a practice that greatly intrigued Yeats and eventually led to the creation of “A Vision,” which played a significant role in their marriage. Within a year of their marriage, Yeats found Georgie’s name insufferable and began calling her George instead.

The Yeatses decided to delve deeper into the mysteries of Renvyle House through automatic writing, a popular way of communicating with spirits in that era. In a séance, they hoped to unlock the secrets of the house’s restless spirits with a seance. 

There was in particular one room Yeats claimed to get in contact with an entity that said he didn’t like when strangers came to the house. 

His wife told about seeing a red-haired, pallid-faced boy of about fourteen. “He had the solemn pallor of a tragedy beyond the endurance of a child,” recalled Georgia Yeats. They learned that this melancholic figure belonged to the Blake family, the original proprietors of the house.

A Catholic Exorcise

According to the gathered people in the room there was one of them that had just converted to catholicism named Evan Morgan. He felt confident in his abilities to perform an exorcism in the room of the ghosts that resided in there. 

Spiritualism: Spiritualism is a belief system that holds spirits can communicate with the living through a medium. The term was first recorded in 1796 and was associated with 18th-century spiritualist Emanuel Swedenborg. It has evolved to encompass various meanings. In a broad sense, spiritualism includes beliefs in a vital life force within living beings, supernatural or divine entities, and the idea that spirits of the deceased continue to exist after death and can interact with the living.

According to them, he was thrown to the ground by a thick fog and had to get help to get to safety. When he calmed down he claimed to have encountered the same young man that grabbed his throat and threw him down. 

The Rest of the Ghost Haunting the hotel

This ghost from the seance is not the only ghost that is said to have been recognised though. Some claim that there are children haunting some of the rooms, and apparently one man haunting the hotel strangled himself. 

According to those who have stayed there there is a female ghosts known as Old Mrs. Gogarty that have been seen in the hotel 

There is also a man that is all dressed in tweed reported to haunt the place and is known to appear in room 27. There have also been complaints about him watching women in their rooms when they are putting on makeup. When some psychics visited in 1965, they claimed that the ghost had to be that of Yeats himself, and this theory has been passed around as fact ever since. 

A Fiery End, and Lingering Spirits

Despite its fiery end at the hands of the IRA, Renvyle House rose from the ashes, rebuilt and resolute. However, the passage of time has not dissuaded the restless spirits from roaming its corridors. To this day, guests and staff have reported uncanny encounters and inexplicable phenomena within these historic walls. 

Renvyle House remains not only a haven of hospitality but also a portal into the enigmatic world of the supernatural, where the echoes of the past continue to whisper their secrets.

On the place were the grand Palau Guell now stands, there used to be a more humble building of rental homes known as the Ave Maria House. People passing by would make the cross for safety as the house was also known as the House of Fear and believed to be haunted.

Before it was built a huge palace was built on the site, there used to be a much humbler building. The now No. 5 house on Nou de la Rambla in Barcelona used to be called The House of the Ave Maria, or more sinister, The House of Fear. Back then it used to stand many rented homes there.

Locals and passersby would share spine-chilling tales of the unnerving sounds emanating from within its walls. As night fell, lamentations and loud banging would echo through the house, sending shivers down the spines of anyone who dared to venture close. The House Today were Palau Guell was built on top of it

As the years passed, the Avemaria House underwent changes that further added to its mystique. Eventually, the house was torn down, making way for a new chapter in its history. A man named Eusebi Guell purchased the plot and built his Palau Guell, a magnificent mansion that still stands today that was designed by Gaudi and built from 1886-1890.
