Yosemite View Lodge’s Shadow People

In the motel styled lodgings by the Merced River, you are as close to the Yosemite Valley as you can get. And according to the people that have stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge, many tell tales about shadow silhouettes by their beds and strange interactions with the paranormal.

Yosemite National Park covers 759,620 acres and stretches into four counties in California. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1984 and is filled with granite cliffs, giant sequoia groves, crystal clear lakes and streams and storming waterfalls from the mountains. 

Although the European settlers’ story in Yosemite is from 1851 when it was “found” by James D. Savage, the Native Americans story in the valley stretches back to nearly 4000 years. As for human presence, perhaps as far as 10 000 years. And by the look of it, it also seems to be one of the more haunted National Parks in the USA as well.

On the banks of the Merced River in El Portal, California, the Yosemite View Lodge is the last stop before the wilderness of the Yosemite National Park. 

Merced River: It flows through the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the central part of the state. It originates in the Sierra Nevada and runs for approximately 145 miles (233 kilometers) before joining the San Joaquin River. It’s known for its scenic beauty passing through Yosemite National Park, where it forms iconic features such as Yosemite Valley and Yosemite Falls. Could it also be the source of some of the ghost stories told from the National Park?

On the surface, Yosemite View Lodge exudes rustic tranquility. Yet, beneath the veneer of peaceful surroundings lies a tapestry of ghostly tales, unsettling apparitions, and mysterious occurrences that makes guests leave reviews online that it is beautiful, nice, but haunted.

Midnight Shadow People

Many of the reports about the haunted rumors of Yosemite View Lodge are about apparitions that can be described as some type of Shadow people. These specters, elusive and enigmatic, make frequent appearances in the lodge’s guest rooms, catching unaware guests. 

These apparitions often dissolve when the guests seem to examine the thing further. One chilling account tells of three friends who, oblivious to the hotel’s haunted reputation, were visited by a shadowy figure near the fireplace. Other people tell about what they believe is their family, but noticing that there is an additional figure in the room. Some are even said to have packed up their stuff and left because of these experiences.

What could this be? Could it be the old lodgings and strangeness of being in a hotel that plays a trick on people? Could it have something to do with weary travelers experiencing things like night terrors in their dreams? Or could this phenomena actually be attributed to ghosts?

The River People’s Presence

One guest, accompanied by a friend, bore witness to an otherworldly encounter during their second night staying at Yosemite View Lodge. Startled awake, they beheld the shadowy silhouette of a figure, devoid of features, standing near their bed—a specter approximately five feet tall. 

Shadow People: What is this type of haunting going on at the Yosemite View Lodge? Several of the guests have told stories about seeing figures and shadows in their rooms.

Terrified, the guest summoned her fellow traveler, coining the term “river people” in an attempt to fathom the origin of this apparition, wondering if it harbored a connection to the ancient spirits of the nearby Merced River. Because even though the hotel doesn’t really have much ghostly history attached to it, the surrounding area certainly has. 

A self proclaimed psychic herself, the guest delved into the phenomenon and discovered that others had encountered similar river-dwelling spirits.

The Masked Child

Another strange story coming from the motel is about the strange child that suddenly appeared. A writer checked into the hotel to get her writing done when she saw a child in the reception wearing a strange mask. The little girl was standing together with her family as they were checking in as well with her animal mask. Although she thought the child looked creepy, she didn’t think much about it. 

Then she saw the child again sitting at the table with its parents when the writer came down for breakfast. The little girl turned to her as if the child knew that she would enter the dining room. 

When the writer saw the little girl again, it was when she woke up after writing on her book and saw the child standing in her room, watching her. She was sure that she had locked the door, but  asked if the child had lost her way and needed help to find the room, the child only shook its head slowly and walked away. 

The last time the writer encountered the child was after a shower and the child was standing in the bathroom. This made the writer storm down to the reception and demanded that the parents would control their kid. The reception called the room up, and horror and confusion followed. They didn’t have a child. 

The Haunted Yosemite View Lodge

As the Merced River flows silently by, Yosemite View Lodge remains a silent testament to the ethereal mysteries that dance on the edges of perception. What could these supposed shadow people and guests’ strange interactions be? 

Within its walls, the whispers of the River People and the elusive shadows of the night converge, weaving a haunting tale that lingers long after the echoes of the Merced fade into the Yosemite twilight.

A Luxury hotel in the wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the Ahwahnee Hotel has housed many famous guests, and some of the guests have, according to rumors, never really checked out and lingers in the hotel as ghosts.

Many people come to seek a simple life, tenting under the stars. Still, there are also many lodges and hotels in the park for those that would like to watch the splendid nature through the windows. Many of these hotels have haunted rumors around them, but none more so than the Ahwahnee Hotel.

Ahwahnee Hotel: The alleged haunted Ahwahnee Hotel is situated amidst the dramatic landscape of the Yosemite National Park. It is said that it is haunted by the founders of the hotel as well as a US president who visited the hotel not long before he was killed.

In the heart of the Yosemite Valley right by the famous Half Dome you will find the legendary and historic Ahwahnee Hotel that was built in 1927 as a luxury hotel for the park’s visitors built by the Yosemite Park and Curry Company. 

The y-shaped building has 97 hotel rooms, but including the cottages as well, there are 121, all inspired by Native American designs. It is situated below a meadow area that was once Miwok village.

The Ahwahnee Hotel’s interior design is said to have inspired the fictional horror hotel Overlook Hotel in Kubrick’s version of The Shining. Because although the hotel in the book was inspired after Stephen King’s stay at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the hotel lobby as well as the red elevator with blood gushing out from it look eerily similar to the one found at The Ahwahnee Hotel.

The Founding Ghosts Haunting the Hotel

The Ahwahnee Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghosts of Donald Tresidder and Mary Curry Tresidde who took the place from being a tent camp to a luxury hotel. Donald met Mary at a visit at the park where Mary was the daughter of Camp Curry and together they spent their life dedicated to the Ahwahnee Hotel and the Yosemite Valley. 

In their later years of their life they lived in a private living quarters on the sixth floor of the hotel. The first to go was Donald while away in New York in 1948. Mary died in the Ahwahnee Hotel in 1970 but both are said to have stayed on in their afterlife. 

Historic Haunted Hotel: On July 14, 1927, the Ahwahnee Hotel was formally opened to the public and managed by the Yosemite Hotel and Curry Company. During the second world war it was also used as a hospital. The “U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital Yosemite National Park, California” was commissioned on June 25, 1943.

According to the legends coming from the guests and staff working at the Ahwahnee Hotel, they are still both haunting the hotel they put their heart and soul into developing. Mary is said to be especially active and it is said she wakes people up to get them dancing in the wonderful common rooms of the building. 

The ghost of Mary is also said to be haunting her former home on the 6th floor where even some guests claim they have felt as if a ghost have tucked them into bed as well as folding their clothing. So all in all, a pretty popular and most helpful ghost overall. 

She is not alone however, according to some claiming to have seen her husband, Donald, also wandering the halls of the Ahwahnee Hotel. The ghost of Donald is mostly seen walking down the stairs of the hotel to get a glass of milk. 

A Presidential Haunting at the Ahwahnee Hotel

In addition to celebrities and famed socialites, many presidents have stayed in the Ahwahnee Hotel, like Reagan, Eisenhower and Obama, but only one of them is rumored to be haunting the hotel. 

John F. Kennedy came and stayed at the Ahwahnee Hotel in 1962 on the 3rd floor, and many claim that they have experienced strange things on that floor that they claim has to be tied to the former president.

People working in the Ahwahnee Hotel have reported seeing him rocking in the rocking chair he requested while he stayed at the hotel when he was alive in the early 1960s because of his bad back. 

The chair in question is also said to be moving around on its own when no one is there. Today, there are no rocking chairs in the hotel, and if you see one, it is not supposed to be there.

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai is one of the city’s most luxurious places to stay, and even through horrible tragedy and decay, it has always come out on the other side shining. Still, there are some haunted stories echoing through the halls where one of the architects is lingering as a regretful ghost. 

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai is one of the most iconic hotels in India. The five-star luxury hotel has been the preferred destination for celebrities, dignitaries, and even royalty since it was built in 1903 next to the Gateway of India. 

The hotel known as The Taj has been witness to some of the most significant events in India’s history, including being a military hospital during WWII and the country’s struggle for independence. It has also been the site of tragic incidents, such as the 2008 terrorist attacks that left the hotel scarred and at least 167 people were killed.

The History of the Taj Mahal Palace

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was built by Jamsetji Tata, a prominent Indian industrialist, as a response to the British-only hotels in the city. The hotel was designed by Indian architect W.A. Chambers, and was opened to the public on December 16, 1903.

Since then, the hotel that is named after the Taj Mahal in Agra has undergone several changes and renovations, and after a period in the 50s and 60s where it was neglected and became a bit run down, it has retained its grandeur and elegance.

The Story of the Ghost of the Architect

One of the most popular legends associated with the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is the legend of the ghost of the architect, W.A. Chambers. According to the legend, Chambers was so guilty of a mistake in his creation that he couldn’t bear to leave it even after his death. 

According to legend, he approved some blueprints of the hotel before going back to England for a short trip. When he returned to Mumbai though, he realized a mistake he had made in the design. Apparently the building was built facing the wrong way that it was intended. 

He could never let this mistake go and it is said that he took his own life by jumping from the 5th floor of the hotel. 

It is said that his spirit still roams the hotel, checking the quality of the work done by the staff. Many guests and staff members have reported seeing a man who matches Chambers’ description walking around the hotel’s corridors.

Some even claim that a staff member was knocked out by his ghost when the staff was trying to steal some of the silverware. 

Who was Really the Mastermind Behind the Taj?

Now, how much of this enduring legend of the hotel is actually true? It is true that English Engineer W.A Chambers did work on the Taj Mahal Hotel, although perhaps not as much as the legend gives him credit for. 

The project actually came from the Parsee Indian, Jamsedji Tata with a vision to build a hotel Mumbai, (Bombay at the time,) worthy and used as much steel to build the dome as the eiffel tower did. It was also the first building in Mumbai to be fully electrified. The original architects were Siddhesh S., Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D. N. Mirza. However, Chambers, Tata’s friend, came in and completed it after Vaidya died. 

A Seafront View: The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel with the rooms pointing out to overlook the water. Could the whole haunted story just be based on an architectural misunderstanding? Or is it really something about the rumours surrounding the Taj?

When talking about the mistake of where the hotel faces, it actually looks like it was Tata that wanted the rooms, not the entrance to look out to the sea, something very uncommon in India. Although it also made it easier for the horse carriages to pull up to the entrance. 

As for Chambers, death, well. Although not concluded with evidence, at least the reasoning for his suicide we can conclude not true.

El Parador de Cardona Castle Haunted Hotel

In a former castle turned hotel in Catalonia, Spain, it is said that more than one of the rooms are haunted. Most haunted is room 712 in El Parador de Cardona Castle where the duke’s daughter died in the tower because of her love for the wrong man.

El Parador de Cardona in Catalonia is said to be a haunted hotel that used to be an old fortress with a 11th century Romanesque church and the first construction on the hill was built by Wilfred the Hairy in 886. 

From the 14th century it was the fortress of the dukes of Cordona that was the most important family in the Kingdom of Aragon and often called Kings without Crowns as they owned a lot of property and had a lot of power. 

The Haunted Historic Hotel

This former castle is now a part of the National Parador Hotel chain that takes historic sites and turns them into hotels you can stay in and experience the rich history of the building. Spain is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique cultural heritage. Among the many treasures that the country holds, Parador Hotels stand out as true gems.

The Girl in the White Dress in El Parador de Cardona

Some claim to have seen the ghost of a girl wearing a white dress walking around the El Parador de Cardona hallways in the night. Who could this ghost of Cardona Castle be?

According to the legend, people think that this could be Adales, the daughter of Viscount Raimon Folch that died tragically in the Cardona Castle a long time ago. 

The Tragic Love Story of Prince Abdala and Adales

Many centuries ago the Duke of Cardona invited the Berber prince Abdala to a party at Cardona Castle and the muslim prince went. 

During the party, the duke’s daughter, Adales, was walking in the castle gardens where she met the prince. They fell in love and swore they would be together no matter what.

They started to meet up in secret, because they knew her Catholic parents would never approve of them being together and that the two towns would go to war if their secret was discovered. But of course they were discovered and her father didn’t take it well at all. 

She planned an escape, but her father was planning her engagement with another nobleman. But the rumors of the young girl’s affair with the boy spread and her fiance broke their engagement off. 

With the breaking of the engagement, they also broke off their support for the viscount, and he was furious. He decided to teach his daughter a lesson and imprisoned her inside one of the towers in Cardona Castle. While being imprisoned in Torre Minona she was only given bread and water for weeks as they tried to break her spirit. The servant that brought her the food was also blind and mute so that she wouldn’t be able to talk with anyone while she was serving her time in the tower. 

Even with this torture, she never once asked for forgiveness for her love, even though her prince was forbidden to ever entering Cordona ever again and according to the legend, she died inside of the tower. 

According to the legend, you can see Abdaka roaming outside of the tower of Cardona Castle on horseback, as he came back in his afterlife to look for his eternal love Adales. 

The Haunted Room 712 in Cardona Castle

Back at the El Parador de Cardona hotel, even some of the rooms are said to be haunted. Especially room 712 is said to have the most paranormal activity in the hotel. 

Because of all the troubles the El Parador de Cardona has had with this room, they decided to never rent out the room except if the visitors are there for the ghosts and specifically asks for it. And it looks like there have been more than enough curious guests that have asked for this room. 

It is said that it is the ghost of Adele that is haunting the room. It is believed that this was her room back in the day.  
The room had a rumor that the furniture would move by itself and for many years the furniture were pulled and ended up in the center of the room each night. 

Today the ghost in room 712 in Cardona Castle seems a bit more relaxed though as it has been a long time since there have been reports of any unofficial remodeling of the room.

In Salamanca in Spain we find the Castle of Buen Amor or the Castle of Good Love. It used to be the love nest of a Bishop and his mistress, and according to the legend her ghost is haunting the place that now is a hotel perfect for romantic getaways, just as intended.

History and Background of the Castle of Good Love

In Salamanca province, there is a castle dubbed, the Castle of Good Love. It is a reference of the romance between the Bishop, Alonso de Fonseca Quijada and Teresa de las Cuevas. Their love ended in tragedy though as well as it became a ghost story. To this day, people claim to have seen their ghosts.

The Castle of Buen Amor, also known as the Castle of Good Love, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back centuries. Originally built as a defensive fortress in the 11th century, it served as a stronghold for various noble families throughout the years.

The Love Nest of the Bishop and his Mistress

Legend has it that the Bishop, Alonso de Fonseca Quijada, infatuated with Teresa de las Cuevas, commissioned the construction of the castle as a gift to her. He couldn’t give himself away as her husband, but he could give her a home. He bought the fortress in the 15th century and remade it to their love nest with more care for the architectural details to be a home for them rather for military defense. 

Together they lived in this castle away from the talk of the town, trying to hide their unforbidden love. Although talk traveled fast and everybody knew of this affair, and so the castle was dubbed the Castle of Good Love. 

The castle became a symbol of their love, and their story continues to be told to this day. It is said that their spirits still roam the halls of the castle, forever bound to each other and to the place they called home.

Castle of Buen Amor Made into a Hotel for Romantic Getaways

In the 1950s, the abandoned castle was bought by the family that now owns it. They spent the next decades restoring it to its former glory as it had been used as a warehouse until then.

In 2003 they opened their doors and offered the castle as a location for weddings and a stay for honeymooners and people at a romantic getaway. Again it became a castle for romance and love. 

The Lady in White Haunting the Castle

One of the most enduring legends associated with the Castle of Buen Amor is that of the Lady in White. Countless visitors and mediums have reported seeing ghosts in this fairytale romance castle. 

More often than not they see a spectral figure dressed in flowing white robes, wandering the corridors of the castle. Some claim to have heard her soft footsteps and the rustling of her gown, while others have caught glimpses of her ethereal form disappearing into the shadows.

The Haunted Castle Durrow and the Ghosts in the Forest

In the woodlands outside of Castle Durrow in Ireland it is said that the ghost of a highwayman is still guarding his treasure. Inside of the old castle turned hotel, it is said friendly ghosts are haunting. 

The regal Castle Durrow stands today as an elegant four-star hotel, exuding timeless charm and a storied history that stretches back to the 18th century. Castle Durrow overlooks the River Erkina in County Laois with over 30 acres of forest and gardens to explore.

This magnificent fortress of pre-Palladian design built from 1712 was once the abode of esteemed barons and viscounts, echoing with the grandeur of bygone eras and the whispers of ghostly secrets.

The village of Durrow takes from the Irish Darmhagh Ua nDuach, meaning ‘the oak plain’, and there is in these woods the ghost of a highwayman guarding his treasure.

The Ruthless Highwayman

Behind the opulent facade of Castle Durrow lies a tale veiled in darkness. Ruthless thieves terrorized the local community in the early years of the 19th century in the dense forest of Durrow. The highwaymen was led by none other than the notorious highwayman, Captain Jeremiah Grant as he was called and his thieving gang left a trail of fear in their wake.

Captain Grant’s gang was a relentless force of malevolence, robbing carriages, and striking fear into the hearts of all who crossed their path. 

However, as fate would have it, the reign of terror orchestrated by Captain Grant and his gang would ultimately meet its end. Justice prevailed, and the nefarious highwaymen were apprehended, their fate sealed by the hangman’s noose in 1816. But before facing their final judgment, they harbored a secret—a stolen treasure, buried deep within the ancient forests surrounding Durrow and Dunmore Wood.

The specters of Captain Grant and his malevolent gang are rumored to still haunt the woods, their spectral presence serving as an ominous warning to would-be treasure seekers, still guarding it all these years later.

Although with this reputation, it is also said that Jeremiah Grant was kind to animals and hurt no man as he robbed them. When looking into history, an orphaned boy that was evicted from his farm from a greedy landlord, one can wonder if it really is more of a tragic story about what poverty can do to a man rather than greed for endless treasures. This gives a stark contrast to the luxury within the huge castle. 

The Friendly Ghosts

The ruthless highwaymen protecting their treasure is not the only ghost said to reside around the old castle. After Castle Durrow opened as a hotel in the 1990s, there have been stories about friendly ghosts that haunt the hotel and are more of a help than anything.

There is also a legend about a woman that died when she fell off her horse close to the castle and is said to be haunting her place of death. This spot is marked with an obelisk in a field near the hotel and many claim to have seen her ghost around the spot. 

The Haunted Castle Durrow

The chilling tales of Castle Durrow and its spectral guardians serve as a haunting reminder that history’s echoes are not always confined to the pages of time. The Haunted Schlosshotel Waldlust

A once glorious and state of the art hotel in the Black Forest in Germany, the Schlosshotel Waldlust is now an empty shell of what it used to be. Old and abandoned, the place is now known as a haunted hotel after the manager was killed in one of the rooms. 

Schlosshotel Waldlust is a haunted and abandoned hotel in Freudenstadt in the middle of the Black Forest in Germany. It certainly looks like a dark fairy tale building now, all dusty with decaying wallpaper and rustling in the old pipes. 

But it used to be a state of the art hotel of 140 rooms where celebrity guests, writers, actors and royals alike came to spend time in the fresh mountain air. It opened in 1902 with Art Nouveau decor specialized for spa and relaxing atmospheres and entertained guests for decades. 

The Murder in the Hotel

The one running the show at Schlosshotel Waldlust was Adele, or known as Adi who brought the guests to the hotel by throwing lavish and exclusive events. She is also a victim of the hotel and thought to haunt the place. 

After the war the family run hotel of Schlosshotel Waldlust saw a rapid decline in guests and revenue. The hotel had already fallen from its heyday earlier in the century.

Grand Hotel: When it opened it was a luxury hotel. Now there is only ruins and damp empty rooms of it left.

The exact details about what happened to Adi is unclear as there never were a record of an Adele as a hotel owner or as a guest, but she was brutally murdered in the world famous hotel in 1949, and the hotel was never the same as she would never check out and leave. 

The Haunted Hotel

After Adi died, the Schlosshotel Waldlust was used as a military hospital for years and many met their end in the former hotel. In the 1960s they tried to open the hotel again as a guesthouse with all the former glory, but something had changed. 

The hotel staff started to notice strange things, the glass was shaking as if it was an earthquake, and they saw a woman with a white veil wandering the halls. They also heard a baby crying in the night, even though there was no one there. 

Schlosshotel Waldlust finally closed in 2005, and is now almost only used for those that want to take a peek at what a haunted and abandoned hotel looks like.

The Lady in Red at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

In the old classic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver a certain Lady in Red is said to haunt the upper floors of the place she used to go ballroom dancing in the 1940s. Still to this day guests report seeing her in the lobby as well as their rooms and she has even been seen passing through walls and locked doors. 

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is located in downtown Vancouver, and this haunted hotel is not to be mixed up with the haunted hotel in Ottawa bearing the same name. The place on West Georgia Street opened in May 1939 after being delayed for many years because of the Great Depression. 

Once a Japanese family called up the front desk and asked if they had double booked the room. When they had entered their room on the 14th floor. The front desk said they had not, probably well knowing that the woman dressed in a red dress was not a living guest at the hotel. 

The hotel is known as the Castle in the City because of the modern fairy tale-like tower and is also the home of the Lady in Red said to haunt the hotel. 

The Legend of the Lady in Red

The story of the ghost of The Lady in Red is that a woman dressed in a long and fancy red dress is supposedly haunting the 14th floor of the hotel, although she has also been seen in other places of the hotel. 

Today, most of the staff at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver know of her and in the hotel bar they even have named a drink after her, at least around Halloween season. 

The Dancing Socialite with a Tragic Death

In life she went by the name Jennie Pearl Cox and she stayed at the hotel many times with her husband Harold according to the stories. She was a Vancouver socialite that attended hotel events and dances in the 1940s when the hotel was new and fresh. 

Her stay at the hotel ended abruptly though when she was 25 years old and she got into a car accident in 1944 at the corner of Burrard and Georgia and died, but never really checked out from her favorite hotel.

The Haunted Hotel

Soon after her death the ghost of the Lady in Red started appearing in the lobby in the stairway and dancing in the ballrooms, especially on the 14th floor as many guests learned of the hard way according to the stories. 

She can be seen walking through walls and locked doors as well and has become a well known ghost in residence at the hotel. 

Not everyone is as used to seeing her as the senior staff at the hotel and when the tv-series X-Files were filming in Vancouver, one of the crew even claimed to have seen the ghost of a woman wearing a red dress.

The Ghost Captured on Camera

A couple of years ago, the legend got another boost when one of the upper floors’ windows got covered in red, but it was perhaps not the most convincing evidence, even if it made the news. 

But was she even real like Jennie Cox? Or was she as real as the red dress that turned out to just be a tarp covering the window?

Some say she is just a figment of the hotel’s imagination, imagined to help promote the hotel and it is just an urban myth as there are no grave stones, birth certificate or even pictures from this socialite to claim she actually existed.

Checking into the Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel in Chengde, China? According to legend, this is a haunted hotel, and the ghost in question is none else than the former Empress Dowager Cixi. 

In the mountains to the northeast, three hours from Beijing is the city of Chengde in Hebei province, home to the Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel (承德云山饭店) situated by the Yangtze River and was built as the modern pride of the city to welcome guests.

The Hotel has around 220 rooms and is the old imperial resort destination of Chengde and was the first four star hotel in the city meant to cater to foreign tourists as well as locals. The hotel is also known as one of the more haunted hotels in the country.

The Ghost of The Empress Dowager Cixi

Yehe Nara Xingzhen: (29.11 1835 – 15.11 1908), a Chinese noblewoman of the Manchu Yehe Nara clan who controlled the Chinese government in the late Qing dynasty as empress dowager. Selected as a concubine of the Xianfeng Emperor she gave birth to a son, Zaichun, in 1856 and controlled until her death.

The Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel overlooks the Yangtze River and is said to be the haunting grounds of Empress Dowager Cixi (慈禧太后) from the Qing Dynasty, the last empress of China. 

Empress Dowager Cixi governed the country for 47 years until her death in 1861 after working her way from the position as a concubine and was a highly controversial figure, often depicted as a ruthless despot that was a big reason for China’s corruption problem, anarchy and revolution that came in the following years. 

Although in recent years, other perspectives on her have emerged as well as many, this meant that the problems in China at the time were much more deep rooted to blame on just one regent.

The Empress is said to watch over her former gardens which the site where Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel is built on used to be a part of. The Empress Dowager Cixi is said to be appearing at the end of the hallway on the 8th floor dressed in the traditional Chinese clothes from the late 1800s. 

For what reason The Empress Dowager Cixi is said to be haunting this exact hotel is uncertain and in no sources found do they state a connection to the place other than the gardens. 

The Man in Western Clothes

The Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel is not a hotel with just one ghost if we are to believe the legend though. The Hotel is also said to be haunted by a man wearing western style clothes who also hangs around on the same floor as well as the ghost of the The Empress Dowager Cixi. 

Whether this particular ghost actually was a western visitor or just wearing the clothes are never really made clear. Although the female ghost both has a name and a history, the ghost of the man is for now nameless and no one knows who it can be.

The Legends of the Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel

The one problem encountered with this story of a haunted hotel though is the lack of Chinese sources for it. Why are they all seemingly just speaking in English? Have the ghosts just been seen by foreign tourists? Did the haunted rumors just happen to be jotted down in English on English sites or are the ghost stories about the former dowagers thinner than the top haunted lists would have it?

The question remains, is there actually a more deep rooted ghost story in The Yun Shan Fan Dian Hotel?

“It was so hot in the room I just couldn’t sleep. All of a sudden the taps in the bathroom came on for no reason. I turned the lights on and the taps turned themselves off. Then when I turned the lights off again the taps came on. It was very weird.

It really freaked me out. I ended up asking to move rooms. Bealey (Broad’s girlfriend) was pretty spooked, too, and I know Moeen Ali’s other half won’t stay there because she’s so frightened of the ghosts.

Ben Stokes has had some problems sleeping as well. He’s on the third floor, which is where a lot of the issues are. I’m telling you, something weird is going on.”

He reported seeing a ghostly figure of a man standing at the foot of his bed. The figure was wearing Victorian evening dress and had no face. According to Gordon, the figure disappeared as soon as he turned on the light.

Another famous incident occurred in 2014 when a guest staying in Room 333 reported seeing a ghostly figure standing at the foot of her bed. She described the figure as a man wearing a top hat and Victorian clothing. The guest also reported feeling a cold breeze and hearing unexplained noises throughout the night.

Napoleon III: Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte; 1808 – 1873 is said to haunt Room 312.

Dickens claimed in 1879 in his guide book that it was the most expensive hotel meal in London that charged 14/6d (or 72½p) for a bedroom, breakfast with coffee and cold meat, and dinner with soup and meat. But for large dinner parties, there was nowhere else to go.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also one of the frequent hotel guest, and Doyle used the hotel as the setting for several Sherlock Holmes stories.

However, some of these guests have reportedly never left the hotel and are said to haunt its halls to this day.

One of the most famous ghostly sightings at The Langham Hotel is that of Emperor Napoleon III, who is said to haunt Room 312. According to legend, Napoleon III stayed at The Langham Hotel in 1870 while in exile. 

He died in 1873, but his spirit is said to have never left the hotel. Guests staying in Room 312 have reported seeing his ghostly figure standing at the foot of their bed as well as loitering down in the basement area.

The German Prince by the Window

Another high ranking ghost said to haunt the hotel is said to be of a German prince who jumped from a window on the 4th floor. 

This ghost is said to have been seen by the BBC announcer, Ray Moor. He described the ghost as a big guy with short hair and a military jacket that was buttoned up to the neck. 

This ghost is said to also be the most active ghost at Langham Hotel and is seen walking in the early morning through the doors. It is also said that he enjoys hanging out in Room 333.

The Other Ghosts Haunting

But there are not only high ranking military or royals or murderous doctors said to haunt the hotel. There are also seen a butler wandering around in the corridors wearing holey socks as well as a man with a gaping wound on his face. 

There is also said a footman in blue with a powdered wig is roaming in the halls that creates a sudden drop in temperature. 

A Stay at the Most Haunted Hotel

The Langham Hotel has been the site of numerous paranormal investigations over the years, with ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts flocking to the hotel to experience its haunted reputation for themselves.

The hotel has even been featured on numerous TV shows, including Most Haunted and Ghost Adventures, which have documented the hotel’s paranormal activities.
