Trinity College: The Ghostly Scholars Who Never Left

Haunted by its former Fellows, Trinity College in Dublin is said to be filled with eerie spirits where even the bell tolls after dark when the shadows take over campus. 

Trinity College Dublin is the oldest surviving university in Ireland, founded in 1592. If we are to believe the rumors, the college is also notorious for its haunted ghost stories and is said to be one of Dublin’s most haunted landmarks.

Its alumni include many great names, and some of them are more fitting to study at a haunted college than others. Most notably Bram Stoker, the creator of Dracula, who studied here from 1866 to 1870. But who were the students and staff said to linger even after The Campanile bells rang for the last time?

The Haunted Trinity College

The most infamous haunting is tied to Edward Ford, a former lecturer and Fellow whose stern temperament made him deeply unpopular with the undergraduates as he had a habit of interfering with student matters, being harsh and disciplinarian. He was also very young, being around 28 when he died and is still seen by people around campus. 

On March 7th in 1734, after a night of heavy drinking, a group of drunken students decided to teach him a lesson after he had scolded them after they had trashed the rooms of Ford’s colleagues, Hugh Graffan. They entered the Front Gate wearing all white, beating up the porter who was stationed there. 

They wanted first to break his windows, but Ford saw them and shot at them with a pistol and injured one from his bedroom window. Now it all escalated and they came back outside of his room at House 25 in the Rubrics with firearms themselves. 

They fired shots into his rooms at the Rubrics, the oldest surviving building in the college. Ford had been urged to stay in his bed, but he went to the window in his night dress and confronted the students. Two shots struck Ford in the head and body, mortally wounding him. Although a surgeon was called, he died two hours after being shot, deeply in pain. On his deathbed, he refused to reveal the names of his killers, instead uttering the chilling words: “I do not know, but God forgive them, I do.”

The matter was investigated and four students were accused, but they were all acquitted as most of the witnesses had been drinking and were unable to identify them and had contradictory stories. Although they were acquitted by the court, the Board had all of them expelled from the college. 

Ford Haunting the Rubrics Building

Forgiveness didn’t seem to bring him peace however. Since then, Ford’s spirit has been seen wandering the side of the Rubrics at dusk, dressed in his scholar’s powdered wig, gown, and knee breeches. 

Students and staff alike have reported catching sight of a figure gliding silently past the red-brick façade, strolling down to Botany Bay before his form vanishes into the shadows before anyone can draw closer. His presence is not vengeful however, although his murderers went without any punishment at all, and went on to have great careers, even after being expelled.

The Legend of The Campanile Bells

The Campanile in Front Square is an iconic landmark of College and was built in 1853 and although there are no ghosts haunting it per se, it certainly has a haunting superstition lingering over it. 

Legend has it that if a student walks underneath the Campanile as the bell tolls within the tower, they will fail all of their exams. 

Today, the bells are automated, but still, people claim they ring at completely random times and the students avoid it just in case. Some say that there is a way to avoid failing though by touching the foot of former Provost George Salmon’s statue before the bell stops ringing. Salmon is by the way known for promising that no woman would ever study in Trinity.

The Ghost of George Francis Fitzgerald

Another ghost of a former staff member at Trinity College said to haunt the campus is that of George Francis Fitzgerald. He was an Irish theoretical physicist in the 1800s and was working as a tutor at the college. He is mostly known for the Fitzgerald-Lorentz contraction, a theory of the relativity of space to speed. This would become important for Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity. 

Fitzgerald died in 1901 at the young age of 41, after he became ill with stomach problems. Many attribute his illness and death to overwork. 

Students now believe that the ghost of Fitzgerald haunts the Physical Laboratory, now known as the Fitzgerald laboratory even though he never stepped foot in the building when he was alive. The Physical Laboratory was built in 1905, four years after Fitzgerald’s death.

The Ghost of Thomas Meredith

Another mathematician said to haunt the halls is the ghost of Thomas Meredith who was a mathematician and a Fellow at Trinity College. He is said to glide across the grass outside the Provost’s House before disappearing when reaching Challoner’s Corner. 

There are also those claiming to have seen a ghost standing in the nave of the College Chapel after evensong in the mid 19th century. This ghost however is much more mysterious and not as widely talked about. 

Archbishop Narcissus Marsh was the Provost of Trinity College during the 1670s and is also one of the ghosts said to haunt the campus. The Ghosts of the Victims of Body Snatching

As many universities in the 18th and 19th century, Trinity College’s medical departments relied heavily on the dead bodies sold to them by body snatchers. Before the Anatomy Act of 1832, only criminals could be used legally for anatomical study. But the market for fresh corpses was higher than dead criminals, so many in medical academia turned to illegal means. A lucrative business once, people dug up freshly buried bodies to sell to the university who dissected them and studied them in the Anatomy Theatres. 

In 1999, close to the Eavan Boland Library, construction workers uncovered remains of at least 20 people that had been buried in shallow graves to cover up the crimes of those buying these corpses.  Their bones all showed signs of dissection and careless disposal. This was also the case close to Trinity’s old anatomy theatres at the E3 Learning Foundry where they found skeletons dating back as far as 1711. 

Even to this day, staff and students claim to have experienced ghostly activity in the School of Medicine. Shadows and disembodied footsteps after nightfall are said to have made at least one night shift worker refuse to come back.

It’s not just a single room on campus said to be haunted at the Chaminade University in Honolulu, it’s not even a single dorm. Throughout the years of this Catholic University, plenty of ghosts are said to be lingering.

The private and catholic university was founded in 1955 by the Society of Mary, and has a lot of legends surrounding it. For one there are supposedly tunnels underneath the school. But how come the school is haunted? It is said to make way for the school they dug up the graveyard that used to be on the land, and the spirits attached to the school are remnants of the spirits that used to be buried there. 

There are many stories from the school, one being that the campus is haunted by a former student, still skateboarding in the afterlife around the campus ground. Some say it was a girl, attending the university as a sophomore when she lost her life in a car accident.

One Mr. Murphy stayed late to grade papers when hearing people running through the halls and walking by the classroom he was staying in. Although thinking it was a bit weird at first as it was no class, he figured it might be the cleaning crew. 

When he left late in the evening, he turned off the lights before getting out in the parking lot. When he turned, he saw that the lights were on, although he was certain he had turned them off. He went back to turn them off, but when he got out, again the lights were on. When he got out of the building after turning the lights off for the third time, he decided to drive home as fast as he could when he saw that they were once again turned on. 

As well as faculty members experiencing strange things when working late, it seems that there are some pictures hanging in the building that somehow seem haunted. The children in the old pictures seem to move. 

The Haunted Bridge

There is also a story about a Dr. Kralemann’s mother who came to visit the school. They went on a walk on the campus and then she ended up levitating on the haunted bridge close to the end of Cemetery Lane. When crossing the bridge, she felt cold, but continued over. When the professor turned, her mother was levitating and her eyes rolled back into her head. 

She rushed over to help and as soon as she touched her arm, she fell to the ground and had no recollection of what had just happened. 

There is also supposed to be a picture of the bridge circulating on the school, showing the faces of what appears to be two faces of priests smiling, although the picture was taken when no one was standing on the bridge. 

The Hale Hoaloka Dorm

In this dorm it is said that children haunt the hall. Most of the ghost stories come from a particular person though, the Hale Hoaloka Dorms former housekeeper, Mrs. Bailey. She claimed to hear children laugh and run through the halls, but when checking, there was no one there. There are said to be at least two of the ghostly kids roaming the halls. 

Once Mrs Bailey was going about her day and work in the dormitories, she also heard more than one radio turn on by themselves and she had to turn them off. 

People also claim to have heard them playing a game with a ball. Those staying in the dorms also say that locked doors open mysteriously, apparitions come and go in their rooms and people keep complaining about sounds in the night they never find the source for.

Because beneath the University of Hawaii at Hilo picturesque surface lies a darker history, one that whispers of hauntings, eerie dormitories, and restless spirits. Founded in 1945 as Hilo Center at Lyman Hall of the Hilo Boys School, UH Hilo has grown into a significant institution, but it hasn’t shaken off its haunted past.

The Origins of the Hauntings

UH Hilo’s residence halls are all named with the Hawaiian word for “house,” or hale. These dorms are Hale Kauanoe, Hale Kanilehua, Hale Kehau, Hale ‘Ikena, and Hale ‘Alahonua. But according to local legend, one of these dorms, often referred to as the “Eerie Dorm,” holds a chilling secret. If we are to believe what theshadowlands reports, it is the Hale Kanilehua that is the haunted one although it is rarely mentioned which one is the haunted one. 

Hale Kanilehua, meaning House of the Sound of the Rain Falling on the Lehua Blossom, is a classic dormitory layout shared by two residents and often thought to be the one dormitory that is haunted. The dorm was allegedly built over the site of an old haunted house.

According to the tale, during the demolition of this house, a young boy was tragically killed while playing too close to the construction site. His spirit, it is said, has lingered ever since, haunting the dorm that now stands on the property.

The Little Boy in the Hall

The most common and unsettling reports of ghostly activity involve the spirit of the young boy. Students living on the ground floor of the dorm—specifically on the girls’ side—have reported seeing him late at night. He is often described as a shadowy figure, small and childlike, playing with a ball in the hallway. The chilling sound of his laughter echoes through the dorms, often followed by the rhythmic bouncing of his ball.

But the boy doesn’t just stick to the ground floor. Students on higher levels have heard the unmistakable sound of small footsteps running up and down the hallways in the dead of night, though no one is ever there when they look. Some have even reported feeling a playful tug on their bed covers, as though the boy were trying to pull them off.

Lights, Voices, and Cold Spots

The little boy isn’t the only spirit said to haunt the dorm. Stories tell of the previous homeowners—the family who once lived in the old house maybe—still lingering in their former abode. Students have experienced lights flickering or turning on and off by themselves. Some have heard voices late at night, as if someone were having a conversation just out of earshot, yet when they investigate, they find no one there.

Other students have complained of sudden cold spots in their rooms or hallways, despite the warm Hilo climate. These cold spots are often accompanied by a feeling of being watched, as if unseen eyes are always lurking nearby.

The Mysterious Moving Objects

Another common tale of the haunting at the University of Hawaii at Hiloinvolves objects mysteriously moving on their own. Books shift across desks, personal belongings disappear only to reappear in strange places, and even furniture has been reported to inexplicably shift positions. 

Toilets have been known to flush by themselves when no one is near, and faucets turn on without any physical contact. Some residents believe this is another manifestation of the restless spirits that inhabit the dorm, always looking for ways to make their presence known.

Haunting or Hallucination at the University of Hawaii at Hilo?

While some students chalk these experiences in the dormitory at the University of Hawaii at Hilo up to overactive imaginations or campus folklore, the sheer number of reports makes it hard to dismiss the hauntings entirely. From eerie footsteps to ghostly laughter, the strange occurrences in the Eerie Dorm have become a part of UH Hilo’s legacy, passed down from one generation of students to the next.

The Ghost of a Heartbroken Student Haunting the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island

Back in the day, the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island used to be a university. According to legend it is haunted by a former student who ended his life after being heartbroken. Or did he?

In the glistening waters of Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, Mackinac Island is a serene retreat known for its picturesque beauty, historic charm, and an eerie reputation for the supernatural. In fact, Mackinac Island was called the most haunted town in America in 2021, with many stories having been covered over the years. And with only a full time population of around 583 people, the ghosts perhaps even outnumber the living.

With no cars allowed and transportation limited to bicycles and horse-drawn carriages, the island offers a unique step back in time. Some come to enjoy the quiet seaside and enjoy the famous fudge. The island has become a perfect summer destination for Americans, but after the tourists leave in the fall, the fog from the Straits comes rolling in, and the leaves turn color, the ghost of the island remains to haunt it.

A Brief History of Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island’s history stretches back thousands of years, with indigenous peoples such as the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Huron considering it a sacred place long before European settlers arrived. The island’s name itself, derived from the Ojibwe word “Michilimackinac,” means “big turtle,” referring to the island’s shape when viewed from above.

The French established a fur trading post here in the 17th century, and the island later became a strategic military outpost during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. In the late 19th century, it became more of a summer colony and a tourist destination that it still is. 

Mission Point Resort: Tragedy and Restless Spirits

Mission Point Resort can be found on the southeast side of Mackinac Island and is notorious for its paranormal activity as well as its wonderful view of the sunrise. The family owned place has been a hotel and conference center since the late 1970, but by then, it already had a long history.

The southeast end of Mackinac Island thus became known as Mission Point after Reverend William Ferry, a Protestant missionary established Mission Church, which was one of the first protestant churches in the Midwest. You can also find the Mission House, a boarding school built to teach native american children the christian way of life. Like the Mission Point Resort, the Mission House also is believed to be haunted.

In the 1940 and 50s, a lot of Mission Point used to belong to a religious group known as The Moral Re-Armament group. They called themselves a multi-national group promoting love, unselfishness, purity and honesty. Other people have since called the group a cult with a pro fascism and pro Hitler statements professed by some members. 

In any case, they invested in the place and built many buildings catering to the community, bot the locals as well as tourists.

Mackinac College and the Student Haunting it

Once, Mission Point Resort was a part of the Mackinac College campus, a private liberal arts college from 1966 to 1970. The college taught courses in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, modern languages, theater, television, radio, journalism, art, government, and public affairs. The college offered professional degrees. 

The student mass consisted of 113 students from 30 states and Canada. It wasn’t a successful one and closed after graduating its first class in 1970. Some tried to revive it as a bible college, but also this failed. 

The Mission Point Resort is said to be haunted by the spirit of Harvey. He was a student at Mackinac College who allegedly committed suicide after a heartbreak. According to some sources, this was said to have happened in 1967.

Harvey probably stayed at the West Residence that was used as the male dormitory for Mackinac College. According to Amy Bruni and her paranormal research group, they were able to track down his real identity, but according to her, Harvey’s parents asked for his real name not to be mentioned. 

Some say it was simply an unrequited love, some say that he proposed, but turned him down. What really happened is something of a mystery, and we only really know that one winter day he went missing and wasn’t found until spring. 

What really happened to Harvey, was it really suicide? Some say that it was actually a rival for his love interest who had something to do with his death. Many stories claim that he jumped from the cliffs behind the college, but this narrative is most likely made up. According to other sources, they said that he shot himself. This is were the story about it perhaps not being a suicide comes on. There were rumors that there were two bullets to the head from a gun that was nowhere near his body. 

Visitors have also reported sightings of shadowy figures and phantom lights in the wooded areas surrounding the Mission Point Resort, as well as hearing mysterious voices calling out in the night.

Harvey Haunting the Theater and Mission Point Resort

His ghost is known to linger around the theater found at the center of the Mission Point Resort ground. The theater was built by the MRA group in 1955 and given to Mackinac College in 1965. where he is said to be flirtatious, bordering on harassing women and playing pranks on men. He is also said to be pinching and poking visitors, often accompanied by cold drafts and unsettling whispers.

The Haunting of Room 428 at Wilson Hall at Ohio University

It is said that room 428 was forever sealed off at Wilson Hall dormitory after several bizarre deaths with ties to the occult in the 1970s. Now, the University of Ohio is considered one of the most haunted all these years later. 

In the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio, Ohio University in Athens boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1804. However, it’s not just academic accolades that have put this university on the map—it’s also one of the most haunted campuses in the United States.

At Brown House, ghostly children are splashing around in the long-gone swimming pool, in Jefferson Hall there is a “marble sound,” which happens most often on the top floor of the building as if someone’s dropping hundreds of marbles on the floor above. At Washington Hall the entire girl basketball team is haunting, while the men’s team is haunting the attic. 

Many locations at one University with many stories, but at the center of these spine-chilling tales stands Wilson Hall, a dormitory that has gained a notorious reputation for its eerie and unsettling paranormal activity.

A Brief History of Wilson Hall

The Wilson Hall is the building most people talk about when they talk about the haunted legends of the University. The red brick building is towering on the green grass, looking quaint and peaceful from the outside. However, on the inside, the legend says it’s anything but. The most infamous aspect of Wilson Hall is room 428, a space that has become synonymous with ghostly encounters and unexplained phenomena.

Wilson Hall, located on the university’s West Green was built in 1964, named after the former student, Hiram Wilson and it has housed generations of students. However, beneath its unassuming exterior lies a darker, more mysterious past. 

The building is said to be built in the middle of five cemeteries in the region. When you look at it on a map, you can draw out a pentagram, the symbol of power and magic in pagan lore. Just a myth? After all, anything within five points can make a pentagram. But this origin lore comes with a legend that tells of its consequences. 

There is also the persistent myth about the hall being built on top of an Indian burial ground, as many supposed haunted spots in America claim. There is a fairly large tribe from the Shawnee natives in Athens, even today. Who knows if this is true, but they did find out in the 1980s that the hall is built on top of the early cemetery of the Athens Mental Institute. Although, also this is something that they say is not really true. There is, however, worth to note that there are in fact two Wilson Halls, one being a historic building with closer ties to the tuberculosis hospital and asylum with its own ghost stories. 

The Legend of Room 428

The legend of Wilson Hall centers on room 428, which has been sealed off and is no longer used for student housing. The room’s haunted reputation dates back to the 1970s, when a female student reportedly died by suicide under mysterious circumstances. Or was it in fact a male student as some former student pointed out that the 4th floor was for boys back in the late 70s? The true identity has been lost over the years, if it even happened. Some say it was in fact two deaths, one being the tragic suicide of the male student, and then a female student moved in and started to dabble with the occult. 

According to campus lore, the student was deeply involved in the occult and had been conducting rituals in her room. It is said that she experienced a powerful spiritual encounter that drove her to take her own life. According to the lore, the student was practicing astral projection, a technique for the spirit to travel without its body. In addition there were several attempts to contact the dead. 

Following her death, subsequent residents of room 428 began to report strange occurrences—disembodied voices, objects moving on their own, and inexplicable cold spots. The disturbances were so persistent and unsettling that university officials eventually decided to lock the room permanently, preventing anyone from entering.

Paranormal Activity in Wilson Hall

The hauntings in Wilson Hall are not confined to room 428. Students living in the building have reported a wide range of supernatural experiences, particularly in the hallways and other nearby rooms. The comment sections in forums flood with people’s experiences staying at the dorm. 

Students have frequently heard faint, whispering voices emanating from the walls, especially near room 428. Some have claimed to see shadowy figures lurking in the hallways or standing at the end of their beds. These apparitions are often described as indistinct and fleeting, vanishing as quickly as they appear. Objects have been known to move on their own—books flying off shelves, doors slamming shut, and lights flickering without explanation. Sudden drops in temperature are a frequent occurrence, with some rooms feeling unnaturally cold despite the heating being on full blast. 

Theories Behind the Hauntings

While the legend of the student’s suicide provides a compelling backstory, some believe that Wilson Hall’s paranormal activity could have deeper roots. Athens itself is steeped in folklore, with numerous reports of hauntings and ghostly encounters throughout the town. The university is built near the site of an old mental asylum, and many locals believe that the area is a hotspot for supernatural activity due to its history of suffering and tragedy.

The Old Maternity Hospital Haunts the Building of Cordoba University

What used to be an old maternity hospital in Spain turned into a faculty of Cordoba University. Both staff working there as well as their students talk about it being haunted by the grieving mothers that lost their life in childbirth. 

Have you ever heard of the mysterious and dark stories of a haunted school in Spain known as University of Córdoba or as it is in Spanish, Universidad de Córdoba? It has become one of the most talked-about topics in recent years due to its eerie atmosphere and paranormal activities.

Universidad de Córdoba is a university in Córdoba, in Andalusia, Spain, that started in 1972, but dates back to the Andalusian region’s Moorish roots.

The Cordoba University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in everything from humanities, social sciences, and engineering.

It used to be a lot of things before education and we can trace the building back to the 16th century when it was a convent, an anti tuberculosis sanatorium, a military hospital during the civil war as well as a maternity hospice.

The Old Maternity Hospital

At the faculty of Law, Business and Economics on Puerta Nueva street  the students and staff alike claim it is haunted by ghosts. The building the faculty is in used to be a hospital from the 1700s. 

During the late 80s there was a renovation that brought up the building’s old past and in the 90s there was a lot of talk about the hauntings the story of the building brought with it. And when the building was transformed into a college in the 70s, they found corpses and small bones belonging to babies in the ground. 

The University of Córdoba building used to be a maternity hospital. The ghosts that roam the halls are often said to be women that died in childbirth, and they are seen crying of the loss of their children as well as their own.

One particular ghost most seen is a long-haired woman in a white hospital gown. Apparently she had blood on her nightgown no one knows for sure what is from, but most speculate it was from the difficult birth she experienced. She is thought to be one of the women that lost her baby in childbirth and threw herself from the bell tower because she couldn’t bear the pain.

It is also said the University of Córdoba is haunted by a soldier from the time it functioned as a soldier hospital during the civil war, angry in his afterlife and threatening to kill everyone that encounters him. 

A lot of poltergeist-like activity like breaking windows and moving objects to scare people have been attributed to this ghost. 

The Staff at Cordoba University Experiencing Paranormal Phenomena

The supposed ghosts are most often witnessed inside the faculty of University of Córdoba by the poor staff that has to remain there when everyone else is gone and darkness falls over the old building. 

The cleaning staff have gotten the most of the paranormal experience and people that have worked there claimed to have been locked inside of the room, objects flying through the room.  

According to one story a cleaner once got a child’s voice calling her name when she was listening to music with headphones. 

Haunting at other Faculties of the Cordoba University

Other faculties under the Cordoba University are the philosophy faculty or Facultad de Filosofía y Letras. It is housed in the baroque building from 1703 that used to be a general hospital called Hospital del Cardenal Salazar in the old Jewish quarter of the city. 

One cleaner in this faculty used to talk with a teacher during his shifts. One day he found out the teacher had been dead for many days, even though they spoke in the school after the teacher passed away. 

People have also talked about seeing lights in the darkened windows, a ghost holding a light while floating past, and children wearing old fashioned clothes running around in the hallways.
