The building of these houses marks the period on Hawaii for the next decades as “the missionary period”. The site was the headquarters of the Sandwich Islands Mission from 1820 to 1863.

The Oldest Frame House, Ka Hale La`au (The Wooden House), was erected in 1821. This building is particularly notorious for its spectral inhabitants of the missionaries said to haunt the old houses.
